Chapter 1102 Such a Big Daughter
Since they were already there, Jane eventually ordered a few barbecue skewers.
She hadn't eaten much barbecue in the Southvale; the flavors here were milder. After a few bites, she lost interest completely.
However, it had been a long time since she had gone out for a late-night snack, and Jane was in a good mood.
She watched Anthony's tall frame squeezed into the plastic chair opposite her, looking somewhat comical, with an amused expression on his face.
For a moment, it felt like they were on a date at night.
It was as if they had gone back to many years ago, before the Watkins family had their troubles.
It wasn't too late when they headed back, close to midnight. Jane insisted Anthony buy her a drink, and she hadn't finished it by the time they returned to Clark Manor.
The living room lights were on. Jane and Anthony didn't pay much attention, thinking the servants had left the lights on for them. But as soon as they walked in, they saw Ann sitting on the sofa.
Ann was still in her pajamas, with a cloak draped over her shoulders, sitting there with a stern face. The moment Jane and Anthony walked in, she looked over at them.
"Mom, why aren't you asleep?" Anthony asked.
A servant took the drink from Jane's hand, and Ann immediately noticed it.
"Where did you go? What did you bring back?" Ann asked slowly.
"We went out for a late-night snack," Anthony replied.
"Late-night snack?" Ann glanced at Jane. "If you're hungry, you can ask the chef to make something. Why eat out? How can outside food be as healthy as home-cooked meals? What did you eat?"
Barbecue, street food—if Ann knew, would she be very angry?
Jane had loved eating these things since she was a child, and every time she ate them, she had to secretly clean up the evidence, or Jovan would definitely scold her.
"Answer me." Ann walked closer, smelling the smoke and barbecue on them, her brow furrowing deeply. "Did you go out for barbecue?"
Jane thought, 'if I say no, would you believe me?'
Ann suddenly seemed to think of something, leaned out to look, and saw the new Pagani.
Ann's face instantly turned very unpleasant. "You even took the sports car out. How could you take the sports car out? Didn't I buy a minivan for Jane? From now on, you must take the minivan out. Safety first, understand?
"And barbecue, is barbecue something a pregnant woman should eat? Anthony, what is on your head? Did you leave your brain at the office?"
"Yes, Mom. I'll take that on board," Anthony replied.
Jane suddenly felt like laughing. She had known Anthony for so many years, and it was the first time she saw him being scolded like this, unable to say a word in return.
"Yes? I don't think you're listening!" Ann scolded more vigorously, then suddenly glanced at Jane and paused. "Sadie, take Jane upstairs to rest."
Sadie responded and helped Jane upstairs. "Ms. Watkins, let's go."
Jane kept looking back at Anthony and Ann as she went up the stairs.
Sadie thought Jane was worried about Anthony and comforted her. "Ms. Watkins, don't worry. Mrs. Clark is just tough on the outside but soft on the inside. She'll just scold Mr. Clark a bit."
Jane looked at Sadie suspiciously. "Do you think I'm worried about Anthony? I just want to watch the show."
Sadie couldn't help but laugh.
Although the Clark Manor villa had been built many years ago, the soundproofing was excellent. Jane couldn't hear anything from downstairs while sitting in her room, so she washed up and got ready for bed.
Downstairs, Ann lectured Anthony for nearly half an hour, all about how he was being irresponsible.
Not a single word of blame was directed at Jane.
"Mom, why are you only scolding me? Couldn't it be that Jane persuaded me to go out and eat?" Anthony asked deliberately.
As soon as he finished asking, Ann slapped him on the shoulder.
"If she persuaded you, couldn't you refuse? It's normal for a pregnant woman to have cravings, but you're not pregnant. Couldn't you advise her? Trying to shift the blame to someone else, do you think you look like someone ready to be a father?"
Ann said angrily. "Speak up, why are you silent?"
"Mom, it's my fault," he said.
Ann was finally satisfied. "Good that you know! Alright, since it's your first offense, I'll let it go this time! It's so late, go to bed!"
Anthony smiled slightly. "Okay."
Ann probably didn't even realize that she was subconsciously favoring the pregnant Jane. Otherwise, she wouldn't have singled him out for a lecture tonight.
Maybe there was still room for reconciliation between Ann and Jane.
Anthony gently pushed open Jane's bedroom door and saw her sitting on the bed, enthusiastically playing with her phone.
"You're up here already?" Jane looked at Anthony in surprise.
Anthony laughed in exasperation. "What else? You seem quite happy."
Jane's schadenfreude was obvious. "It's rare to see Mr. Clark getting scolded. It's a novelty. Too bad I didn't see it live."
"You little ingrate." Anthony chuckled and flicked Jane's forehead with his finger.
"Hey! Don't hit my head! If you affect your son or daughter and make them dumb, you'll regret it!" Jane covered her forehead and glared at Anthony.
Anthony looked Jane up and down with a teasing glint in his eyes. "Indeed, you're quite the grown-up 'daughter' now, aren't you?"
