Chapter 253 Can't You Comfort Me A Little?
Lucas, still groggy and wearing a blank expression, walked over and ripped the duct tape off one of the men's mouths before delivering a sharp kick.
The man, jolted awake by the kick, looked utterly defeated, as though he had endured a night of torment.
"Tell me, what are you doing here?" Lucas asked. His tone suggested he had an inkling of their intentions already.
The man's gaze fixed on Lilian in such a critical moment could not have been a mere coincidence. He indicated with his chin and said, "We were hired to kidnap this woman."
Lilian was lost in Lucas's voice. She found it unusually captivating this morning. Its deepness and slight hoarseness added an unexpected allure, sending a shiver down her spine. However, she was pulled back to her senses when she heard the man’s reply. She asked, puzzled, “Why do you want to kidnap me?”
Lucas delivered another kick. "Be honest, or I’ll remove your last piece of clothing and castrate you."
The man, now only in his boxer briefs, shivered at the thought, fearing the pain but more so the loss of his dignity.
Lilian was shocked.
‘He’s so ruthless!’
"It was Henry who paid us to kidnap her. He planned to use her to force Oliver into confessing. Right now, all suspicion for the murder falls on Oliver, yet no concrete evidence has been found," the man confessed.
Henry had been closely monitoring the Norton family and had learned by chance that Winnie was now Natalie's assistant.
The man, resentful and frightened of Lucas, looked away, muttering, "I thought it was just a young girl living alone. I didn't expect there to be another person... To be stripped, have my head shaved, and be doodled on. Such childish antics!"
"What did you say?" Lucas challenged with a snort.
"N-nothing."
The other kidnapper, now awake, shared a look of despondency with his accomplice.
When the two kidnappers regained consciousness last night, they found themselves captured and their mouths taped shut. They glared at Lucas fiercely as he shaved their heads, leaving them with unflattering haircuts. Unexpectedly, he did not stop there. In between games, he would doodle on them every time he won a game, showcasing his impressive skills.
Eventually, tired of the games, Lucas turned on the heater and settled on the sofa to sleep.
Given Lucas's penchant for oversleeping, coupled with the late night, his mood was foul when he woke up, treating everyone as if they had wronged him greatly.
"I want to sleep, don’t disturb me," Lucas warned them all before he turned to lie back down on the sofa.
The kidnappers exchanged glances, understanding better than to provoke him further. They knew Lucas was capable of anything.
The sofa, hardly a place for comfort, was already cramped for the petite Lilian. It was even more cramped for Lucas, who was six feet tall. He was forced to curl up on the sofa.
"I’m hungry," Lilian announced, standing by the sofa. She looked aggrieved at this moment.
"Then find something to eat, just don’t bother me!" Lucas grumbled, turning away and showing his back to her.
Had it been just the day before, Lilian might have preferred Lucas's indifference, which would have given her a chance to leave. But the presence of the two kidnappers was a stark reminder of the reality of her situation. Lucas was not lying to her, and Natalie was right; wandering off on her own was dangerous.
Her restlessness had driven her outside previously, seeking a distraction.
She knew leaving now would only invite trouble. With Henry already having dispatched two men, and their failure likely to prompt more attempts, she could not afford to become a burden to her cousin.
"Henry is such a jerk!" Lilian exclaimed, frustration evident in her voice. After a moment of contemplation, she turned to Lucas and asked, "Hey, why would that old Henry kidnap me instead of Natalie? How does he know who I am? Hey! Don’t ignore me!"
Lilian poked Lucas in the back. He ignored her, and she poked him again.
Lucas's patience wore thin, and he sat up abruptly, his expression dark. "Are you going to poke me again?"
"You’re so mean!" Lilian said, her eyes wide and innocent. Having discovered that Lucas was genuinely there to protect her and that she would have been kidnapped without his intervention, her attitude toward him had softened significantly.
‘The food he made was really delicious, and he even did the dishes… Not only that, but he had to sleep on the sofa and let me have the bed…’
The more Lilian pondered over these gestures, the more remorseful she felt, causing her to speak in a gentler tone.
Lucas had never before encountered someone like Lilian. Her large, expressive eyes made him feel inexplicably guilty, even when he knew he did not do anything wrong.
"People within our circle, including the police, are aware my sister is Oliver's wife. Targeting her would immediately arouse suspicion. But you," he paused, emphasizing the next word, "an idiot without any known identity or strength, presents an easier target and is less likely to draw attention. Henry could simply deny any involvement if he targets you. Do you understand?"
Lilian, slightly taken aback by the blunt characterization, nodded slowly. His reasoning seemed so sophisticated and cunning to her.
"Do you often watch psychological dramas?" she asked, curious if a habit of watching such content could sharpen one's understanding of complex schemes.
Observing her earnest expression, Lucas remained silent for a beat before bluntly asking, "Are you stupid?"
‘She really can’t compare to my sister at all!’
Lilian, feeling a bit deflated, moved toward the fridge and found it mostly empty, save for a few cherries. After some searching, she discovered an unopened bag of potato chips.
Lucas, now fully awake, watched as Lilian, resembling a small hamster, nibbled away at the food on the coffee table.
Assuming she had disturbed him, Lilian said innocently, "I'm really hungry. I've been eating quietly. I don’t like eating in the bedroom…”
"This is what you're having for breakfast?" He couldn't hide his disdain. "Cherries and potato chips?"
Lucas's expression conveyed both surprise and a hint of disgust as he continued to say, "No wonder you’re so short."
"If you’re not going to cook for me, then you have no right to criticize my choice of food," Lilian snapped back, her patience wearing thin.
