Chapter 10: Quite a Few People Like Her
Just as Charlotte was about to leave, Frederick stepped out with a young girl by his side. Charlotte recognized her from magazines—Chloe, Frederick's only sister.
Chloe had come back from studying abroad six months ago and quickly fell for Ethan.
Right now, Chloe was clinging to Frederick's arm, acting all cute. "Frederick, you have to meet Ethan. He's amazing."
Frederick shrugged her off casually.
Chloe pretended to be mad, but it was clear they had a great relationship.
With such a close sibling bond, why did she ever think Frederick would take her case?
She didn't dislike Chloe; she just felt a bit self-mocking.
Frederick noticed her and quickly dismissed Chloe before heading to the front desk.
Charlotte saw him coming and suddenly didn't know how to face him.
Frederick paused in front of her for a moment without saying anything. Charlotte glanced at him quickly and then bolted.
The receptionist immediately handed the jewelry box to Frederick. "Mr. Hawkins, the lady left this."
Frederick took it and nodded gracefully.
Back in his office, he tossed the diamond necklace into a drawer like it was nothing.
For a long time, he almost forgot about Charlotte, only remembering her when he needed some relief.
She had a slim waist and long, straight legs.
In the following days, Charlotte was swamped.
She met with Michael, who was very capable. After a few meetings, she quickly understood her father's situation.
In his spacious, bright office, Michael carefully reviewed the materials Charlotte submitted and smiled gently. "Miss Russell, since Frederick referred you, I'll be honest. At best, we can reduce the sentence to two years."
Charlotte felt a bit conflicted.
Michael sat comfortably with his hands crossed and smiled again. "I'm curious. Why isn't Mr. Hawkins handling this case himself? If he did, there's a good chance of overturning the verdict to not guilty."
Charlotte was taken aback for a moment, then made up an excuse: "Mr. Hawkins has been too busy lately and doesn't have the time, so he recommended you."
Michael nodded without pressing further. After discussing the case, he politely saw Charlotte to the door, and Charlotte was very grateful to him.
At that moment, a familiar voice sounded behind her. "Charlotte?"
Charlotte turned around and saw a handsome face. It was Oliver Taylor, Ethan's good friend. They had met a few times before, but they weren't close.
Oliver walked up to her and casually asked, "What are you doing here? Was that my dad you were talking to about a case?"
Charlotte was stunned. Was Oliver Michael's son?
Oliver enthusiastically invited Charlotte to dinner. She felt uncomfortable with his enthusiasm, but considering his father was her father's lawyer, she reluctantly agreed.
Oliver drove a sports car, and Charlotte sat in the passenger seat, distracted. After she fastened her seatbelt, Oliver asked, "What do you want to eat?"
Charlotte casually said, "Mexican food, I guess."
Oliver immediately adjusted the GPS and drove to a restaurant.
In the car, Charlotte didn't say much, her mind filled with details of the case.
Oliver didn't disturb her. He would quietly watch her at red lights.
He had always liked Charlotte, but no one knew.
Ethan didn't know either that his ex-girlfriend was quite popular. If it weren't for Ethan, who knew how many people would have pursued Charlotte?
Half an hour later, Oliver parked the car at a restaurant.
Because the food was good, the place was packed.
Oliver got them a window seat, and when it was time to order, Charlotte offered, "Let me treat!"
Oliver smiled. "Charlotte, I didn't expect you to be so generous."
Charlotte knew he was joking and said while ordering, "Oliver, don't tease me. It's just a meal."
Oliver toned it down. He knew Charlotte was only having dinner with him out of respect for his father. He was looking for an opportunity to flirt with her.
Just then, a striking couple walked in. It was Ethan and Chloe.
Charlotte saw them too and immediately used the menu to cover her face, thinking, 'Oliver is really unreliable!'
Oliver, however, greeted them proactively, "Ethan."
Ethan was about to speak when he noticed the girl sitting across from Oliver; even with her face covered, he recognized her as Charlotte.
Ethan frowned and thought, 'Why is Charlotte with Oliver?'
Oliver kindly explained, "Charlotte hired my dad to handle her case, and I was getting details from her."
Men are perceptive, and with a few words, Ethan guessed Oliver's intentions. Oliver liked Charlotte, and he said it on purpose.
