Chapter 339 Frederick Was Especially Considerate (Part 3)
Frederick slid back into bed.
He noticed Charlotte's breathing was way too steady, meaning she was definitely awake.
"Why aren't you sleeping?" he asked, leaning in for a kiss.
Charlotte snuggled into his arms, her fingers tracing the pillow in the dim light. She whispered, "You don't have to hold back like this."
She felt a little too.
Frederick tightened his grip on her waist without a word. He knew Charlotte felt a bit, but once was enough for her. Unlike people truly in love who never felt it was enough.
They wished they could cuddle all night.
His body was cold, and it felt nice to lean against.
He whispered softly in her ear, "Charlotte, you can tell me anything. I'm your husband. I'll listen. I won't do anything you don't like."
Charlotte stayed quiet.
He had heard what she told the psychologist.
Frederick was a bit nervous. He was scared bringing it up would upset her, but after a while, Charlotte said, "Frederick, find me another psychologist. I'll go by myself from now on."
They had two kids and no plans to split.
She was sick and needed help.
But as a woman, Charlotte didn't want her husband to know about those things. Some wounds needed to heal slowly on their own.
Frederick agreed.
Before sleeping, he whispered gently in her ear, "I'll take Lola for a run in the morning."
Charlotte's wounds had been out in the open. She didn't avoid it and went to the new psychologist Frederick found. There was some progress but not much. Maybe, as the doctor said, they needed another kid or just more time.
Lily was pretty worried about her and invited her for coffee.
At the dessert shop, Lily smiled and pushed a dessert towards her. "This is the specialty here. Try it. If you like it, take some for Lola."
Charlotte took a bite. She smiled. "It's pretty good."
Lily immediately waved for two more to be packed.
She did it so fast that Charlotte just stared at her. Lily noticed Charlotte's gaze and touched her own face. "Why are you looking at me like that? It's creepy."
Charlotte gently stirred her coffee and smiled. "Lily, we've known each other for 12 years."
Lily was visibly startled.
12 years.
She touched her face carefully, finally getting Charlotte's sentiment. Back in college, Lily was the most glamorous among them.
When she was with Robert, she indulged in all pleasures.
In recent years, married to Bradley and with a son, she often sighed in front of the mirror that she wasn't as slim as before, and her face had rounded a bit.
But Charlotte had hardly changed.
No wonder Frederick couldn't let go. Even if he couldn't touch her, he wouldn't let go. Lily couldn't tell if this was good or bad.
As they were reminiscing, someone came down the elevator.
She was dressed super fancy; she even had a personal assistant with her, mimicking a celebrity.
It was Tina!
Tina was also surprised. She didn't expect Charlotte to still dare to come out.
Everyone knew about those scandals. Wasn't Charlotte afraid of gossip?
She thought she had done everything without giving anything away. Even if Charlotte knew it was her, what could she do? The Hawkins family couldn't control her husband.
Tina strutted over, rocking an expensive fur coat even though it was just early autumn.
She plopped down across from Charlotte, a thin cigarette dangling from her fingers.
A waiter quietly reminded her, "Ma'am, no smoking allowed here."
Tina just laughed.
After the waiter left, she looked at Charlotte and Lily, grinning like she owned the place. "What a coincidence! Lily, you've packed on some pounds since you got hitched. What are you now, 120? Your hubby cool with that? And Charlotte, Frederick's in his prime. You really think he'll stick around forever? Won't he find a side piece?"
Lily's weight might've changed, but her temper sure hadn't.
She was ready to slap Tina!
Charlotte held her back and smiled at Tina. "Ms. Anderson, you don't need to worry about that! Why aren't you at home keeping an eye on your own husband? Why are you always so concerned about other people's husbands? Didn't marriage change your old habits?"
Tina was fuming! She was about to spit out something nastier when someone grabbed her arm.
She looked up—it was Ethan.
Ethan, in a sharp business suit, was clearly there for a meeting. His face was a mix of emotions.
Tina hadn't seen him in ages and blurted out, "Ethan!"
Ethan dragged her out of the dessert shop.
His rough manner left Lily stunned. She whispered to Charlotte, "See, there's always a bigger fish. I really wanna see Ethan hook up with her and then get caught by her husband."
Charlotte gave her a look.
Lily whispered, "She bullied you. Even if you don't say it, I know she did it. There aren't many worse than her."
Charlotte smiled and slowly sipped her coffee.
At the hotel's emergency exit, Ethan pinned Tina against the wall, glaring at her, and Tina glared right back.
They were old flames.
But this reunion was anything but sweet.
After a long silence, Tina sneered. "Ethan, you're really sentimental. Still can't forget her? Now that you know she has issues with Frederick, your heart's all stirred up again? Let me tell you, even if Frederick can't touch her, it's not your turn!"
Charlotte's pure, innocent look earlier had really gotten under her skin.
Why? Why could Charlotte, who couldn't give a man pleasure, still hold Frederick's heart so firmly, making such a proud man bow to her and willingly stay with her!
She didn't buy it! She didn't believe Frederick's words.
How many men could stay faithful?
Ethan and Robert both slept with her after a little seduction.
She wanted to see Charlotte's family fall apart.
Ethan suddenly let go of Tina, looking a bit embarrassed because Tina was right. When he heard the recording of Charlotte slowly saying she no longer believed in Frederick's love, talking about their marital issues, and mentioning they only did it once a month, he felt a bit of joy!
He knew this thought was ridiculous and twisted.
But he couldn't control himself.
His expression gave him away, and Tina saw his feelings clearly. She said bitterly, "Ethan, what do you like about her?"
Ethan was silent.
What did he like about Charlotte? He couldn't say.
The only thing he was sure of was that no matter how many women he had, the four years with Charlotte were unforgettable.
Maybe, regret made people more sorrowful.
