Chapter 605 He Still Hasn't Figured Out How to Deal with Amara!
The evening rain had vanished without a trace, leaving just a hint of moonlight behind.
Kingsley watched Amara head upstairs.
He glanced around; the place had a nice vibe. Sure, the five-story buildings didn't have elevators, but they had their own charm.
Given Amara's current situation, it made sense she lived here.
Kingsley leaned against his car, smoked half a cigarette, and thought about going upstairs to check things out.
Just then, a soft voice broke the silence, "Kingsley, do you have feelings for her?"
Kingsley frowned a bit, then turned to see Hannah standing a little ways off.
In the dead of winter, Hannah stood there shivering in just a shirt and wool skirt, questioning him despite the cold. Honestly, in Kingsley's mind, Hannah wasn't that important. Their relationship was pretty superficial; they hadn't even kissed or hugged.
Hannah didn't want to come off so pushy.
Her mom had told her that with someone like Kingsley, she shouldn't worry too much about his other women if she wanted a lasting marriage.
But she couldn't help it. She felt like if she didn't get a clear answer, she couldn't marry him.
Kingsley looked at Hannah with indifferent eyes, seeing right through her.
If Amara hadn't come back, he probably would've married Hannah, and they would've lived a lie. But Amara did come back. Even though he hated Amara, he knew his hatred had its reasons.
In about half a minute, Kingsley made up his mind. He opened the backseat door and firmly said to Hannah, "I'll take you home."
Under the moonlight, Hannah blinked and didn't dare throw a fit, getting into his car.
Kingsley drove fast.
In less than 20 minutes, he parked in the courtyard of the Cook Villa. It was late, not really the best time for a visit, but he still followed Hannah inside.
The servants at the Cook Villa were alerted and quietly informed Hannah's parents.
Hannah's parents thought Kingsley and Hannah were about to get married and didn't think much of it.
Only Hannah's face was pale; she guessed he was going to break up with her.
In the living room on the second floor, she placed her hands on her knees and bit her red lips. "I'm more suitable for you than her! Amara doesn't seem to have any background, and besides, she's with Mr. Carter, whose private life is a mess!"
She felt a bit guilty after saying that.
Kingsley stared at her with his blue eyes, and Hannah's voice grew smaller and smaller, not daring to say another word.
After a while, Kingsley said coldly, "Now I give you two choices: first, we end our relationship here! Second, I will give the Cook Group two projects. You can tell your father, and he will understand, but I have conditions."
Hannah, ever naive, stood in a daze. She never imagined that Kingsley, whom she admired, would negotiate with her for Amara.
Hannah couldn't accept it and said softly, "How is Amara worth it? You two have clearly broken up."
Kingsley didn't answer her.
With Amara back, he hadn't decided what to do with her, but he needed to clear things up with Hannah. He didn't like Hannah and had no intention of marrying her, so he let her choose.
A smart person would know what to choose.
Kingsley stayed on the second floor for less than 10 minutes. When he arrived, the Cook Villa was brightly lit, but when he left, only a small night light was on.
When he left, Hannah's parents were stunned. Eugene Cook and his wife, Leah, rushed to Hannah's room. Leah demanded, "What's going on? Why did Kingsley leave? Why didn't you keep him here?"
Leah was fuming at Hannah's failure.
She was desperate for Hannah and Kingsley to get together, thinking it would secure the Hawkins Family's support and make the Cook Family thrive!
At Leah's question, Hannah broke down in tears. "Kingsley doesn't want me anymore!"
After grilling her for details, they were even more shocked! How could Hannah be less appealing than a secretary with no status?
Kingsley had planned to head back to his apartment, but after some thought, he went back to the Hawkins Mansion instead.
It was late. Frederick was upstairs smoking. When he saw Kingsley return, he stubbed out his cigarette and sneered, "A 30-year-old man with no nightlife! It's embarrassing!"
Kingsley loosened his tie.
He leaned on the sofa and said coolly, "I don't want to have a kid before marriage!"
Frederick sneered, "Is it that you don't want to? Or that you can't?"
He didn't want to argue and started heading upstairs. After a few steps, he turned back. "Logically, you're 30 years old. We don't want to meddle in your private life, but at least give us a grandchild!"
"Lola and Johnny have two kids each, and Gavin also has two!"
Frederick sneered, "Is that the same?"
Except for Angelina, who had the Hawkins surname, the others were either Devereux or Flores. Besides, Frederick was waiting for the Hawkins Family heir. While he scolded Kingsley, Frederick had an elder, Patrick, who called every day to urge him.
Then Frederick asked, "How are things going with Hannah?"
Kingsley said indifferently, "Just so-so."
Frederick snorted again, "Since it's going well, invite Hannah to your birthday next week. Let your relatives see if she can marry into the Hawkins Family and manage your household! You never let us have peace of mind!"
After saying that, Frederick went upstairs.
Kingsley sat there.
He took Frederick's cup and slowly drank half a cup of coffee. He thought about what Frederick had just said, actually being somewhat critical of Hannah, doubting her ability to manage the household.
But three years ago, Amara was even more naive.
Frederick had unconditionally accepted and even liked Amara. Kingsley could guess he liked Amara, so Frederick didn't mind other aspects of her.
Since he didn't like Hannah, he started to mind other aspects.
Kingsley smiled bitterly. Was his relationship with Hannah so dull that even his parents noticed?
The next morning, Kingsley fastened his cufflinks and slowly went downstairs.
Frederick was already sitting at the dining table, holding a newspaper and reading it sarcastically. "The Hawkins Group president visits the Cook Villa at night, preparing to marry the Cook Family's daughter."
Kingsley sat down.
Frederick folded the newspaper. "Did the Cook Family do this?"
A servant handed over some porridge, and Kingsley took a couple of sips, speaking indifferently, "Probably."
Frederick's smile faded. "They are too impatient!"
Amara caught a cold and made herself a packet of cold medicine at work.
Just as she took a few sips, the secretarial office door opened, and Caitlyn walked in.
Caitlyn wore the diamond ring Amara had picked for her on her finger, her arms crossed over her chest. She had a voluptuous figure, which was quite pleasing to the eye.
Amara quietly admired her for a few seconds and raised an eyebrow. "What's up?"
Caitlyn didn't answer directly but instead said, "Did you see the newspaper? Kingsley went to Hannah's house last night. He and Hannah are about to get married."
Amara read about Kingsley in the paper that morning. It felt like a punch to the gut, but she quickly shook it off—they had been over for a while. As Caitlyn scrutinized her, Amara remained calm.
This seemed to irk Caitlyn. Not ready to give up, she pressed. "Do you really not care about him anymore? I remember you crying and chasing after him back then. Are you afraid you can't compete with Hannah? Don't you have a son?"
Amara opened her computer, multitasking as she replied, "Do you like Kingsley now or Landon? If Landon knew you were so interested in Kingsley, he might not be happy!"
Caitlyn's face twisted in anger. "Don't use Landon to threaten me! I know you're the illegitimate daughter of the Hughes Family, and your son is also illegitimate."
Before Caitlyn could finish, Amara slapped her hard.
Caitlyn was stunned.
Holding her cheek, Caitlyn asked in disbelief, "You dare to hit me? Aren't you afraid I'll have Landon fire you?"
"Caitlyn, what are you saying!" Landon walked in, pulling her in front of him, his voice cold. "I've been wanting to slap you!"
Caitlyn gritted her teeth. "Did I say anything wrong?"
Landon was about to slap her when Amara stopped him.
Amara's face was pale, and she looked at Caitlyn coldly. "Yes, I'm an illegitimate daughter! But is that something I could choose? I raised Jesse on my own, but so what? I didn't destroy anyone's family and abandon my child. Why should Jesse and I feel inferior? You're one of Landon's mistresses. How much more noble are you?"
Amara was usually very tolerant!
But she couldn't accept Caitlyn insulting Jesse, who had done nothing wrong.
Caitlyn gritted her teeth in anger.
Landon rubbed his nose and escorted Caitlyn out. Before leaving, he gave Amara a meaningful look.
Amara knew she had crossed a line.
She apologized hoarsely, and Landon said indifferently, "Actually, I'm also an illegitimate child."
Caitlyn had no way to throw a tantrum anymore.
Caitlyn was afraid of Landon's anger, so after entering the CEO's office with Landon, she tried to please him by sitting on his lap and asking for a kiss. She knew he liked to play with excitement.
Landon wasn't in the mood.
Caitlyn, feeling awkward, sat to the side playing games. After a long time without a word from Landon, she couldn't help but say, "I won't target Amara anymore! Seriously, she's just a secretary, and you protect her so much!"
Landon ignored her!
After a while, the receptionist called, her voice sweet. "Mr. Hawkins is here to see you. Are you available?"
Landon chuckled lightly. "A rare guest. Let Mr. Hawkins come up!"
Two minutes later, Kingsley took the private elevator upstairs.
Kingsley was handsome and of distinguished status. The female employees of the Carter Group collectively looked at Kingsley, but knowing he had a girlfriend, they didn't dare to fantasize too much.
Amara's office was just outside the CEO's office.
Along the corridor was a floor-to-ceiling window. When the blinds were drawn, the scene inside was fully visible.
As Kingsley passed by, he saw Amara slacking off.
Amara had been caught in the rain yesterday and had been feeling unwell all day. Now, she had a fever.
She was asleep on her desk.
Amara's delicate face was slightly pale, but her cheeks had a hint of blush. Her hair fell, half-covering her face, making her look very beautiful.
From Kingsley's angle, he could even see her delicate shoulder blades, always glistening with sweat back then when they made love.
Kingsley's Adam's apple moved slightly.
He hadn't figured out his future with Amara, but he couldn't deny that he still wanted to make love to her. He had never had other lovers; all his intimate moments had been with Amara.
His body tensed slightly with the pain.
Finally, he entered her office.
On Amara's desk were scattered various materials and pictures, some were small cards from car dealerships, some were jewelry promotional images, and there were even brochures from daycare centers.
Kingsley's fingers lightly brushed over them.
It was as if by doing so, he could touch Amara, trace the path of her life.
Amara woke up startled.
She was still a bit confused, unsure if it was morning or afternoon, real or a dream. She just stared blankly at Kingsley in front of her, her red lips softly saying, "Kingsley."
Kingsley casually flipped through her pictures.
He looked down at her. "Does Landon have a son now? Did you also pick out his son's diaper brand?"
Amara followed his hand with her eyes.
That was for choosing a school for Jesse, but it was no longer needed as she had decided to return to Bostan.
She patted her face to wake herself up. "Are you here to see Mr. Carter?"
Kingsley's gaze deepened.
After a moment, he nodded and walked out.
Amara was in a daze for a while when Landon called. "Bring in two cups of coffee! I haven't seen Kingsley in a long time, and we plan to have a good chat. You should join us later!" Landon's phone was on speaker.
Amara, feeling sick and having been bullied by both Landon and Caitlyn today, was quite upset.
She could indeed fight back.
But she couldn't afford to lose this job. Sometimes it was okay to bully Caitlyn a bit, but she couldn't challenge Landon's authority. So she made the coffee and went in, saying softly, "Mr. Carter, I'd like to take half a day off to go to the hospital."
Before Landon could respond,
Kingsley had already stood up, saying indifferently, "I'll leave the invitation here. Mr. Carter, feel free to attend if you have time."
With that, Kingsley left!
Landon didn't bother asking Amara to see him out. After Kingsley left, he took a sip of coffee and said, "Kingsley's having a birthday party and invited me. Do you want to go? The Hawkins Mansion is quite impressive; I can show you around."
Amara replied calmly, "Mr. Carter can take Ms. Robinson."
Landon played with the gold pen in his hand, not saying a word. He had no plans to get married in this lifetime. Being with Caitlyn was really not suitable; he was much older than her.
Landon had suggested breaking up with Caitlyn before.
But after a couple of days, they ended up having sex again, so they didn't break up.
They would stay together until they got tired of each other.
Amara knew his thoughts. Although she didn't like Caitlyn's spoiled nature, she always felt sorry for her. With Caitlyn's qualities, she could be with anyone, but she chose Landon. Landon always had many girlfriends, and Caitlyn didn't even have a proper status. When Kingsley came, Caitlyn hid away.
Amara didn't meddle. She signed the papers and prepared to go to the hospital.
But as soon as Amara walked out of the Carter Group's branch office, a white Bentley stopped in front of her. The window rolled down, revealing Kingsley's mature and handsome face. "Get in the car; I'll take you to the hospital!"
