Chapter 850 Grant, It Must Have Been Hard When You Were a Child!
Nancy froze.
She turned around and saw Benjamin, his bright yet cautious eyes looking at her pitifully.
He didn't say a word, just held on tightly, not letting her leave.
Those eyes looked so much like her father Royce's.
Even more so than Nancy's own.
When Royce was young, he was famously handsome, with countless women admiring and pursuing him... Verity was one of them, which led to a long-standing imbalance in their marriage.
One was controlling, the other too trusting.
Nancy looked at the small face in front of her, feeling a complex mix of emotions.
She had met his mother, Thea Ellis, one of Royce's prized students. Nancy never expected Thea to become Royce's mistress and have such a grown son.
Nancy steeled herself and tried to make him let go.
Benjamin refused, saying he would behave and listen.
Nancy tilted her head back slightly, trying to suppress her disgust.
She said, "If you want to stay here and have a good life, stop following me! I don't want to live with you, understand?"
Benjamin looked at her with wide eyes.
Eventually, he slowly let go and walked over to the sofa, sitting down.
He curled up on the sofa, not moving.
After a while, he whispered, "I don't want anything. I just want my mom."
In fact, the word "dad" was also foreign to him because Royce rarely visited him, afraid of being discovered...
He only saw Royce a few times a year, and those meetings were rushed. Royce would even scold Thea, saying she couldn't even control a child.
Nancy clenched her slender hands, telling herself not to soften.
She should just turn around and leave.
But for a long time, she stood in the old living room, not moving an inch.
Grant didn't plead. He gently squeezed Nancy's shoulder and said softly, "I'll wait for you outside. If we go back now, we can stop by the supermarket, buy some groceries, and cook a meal."
Nancy's lips trembled. She suddenly asked him, "Grant, do you think I'm despicable too?"
Her voice was on the verge of breaking, "Just now, so many thoughts flooded my mind, each one more evil than the last... so evil I almost didn't recognize myself!"
Grant held her.
He gently patted her back and told her, "That's normal! No one is without evil thoughts! Because you're human, it's normal to think that way, but you didn't act on it... did you?"
He understood the struggle Nancy was going through.
Nancy hated Royce. She didn't care about wealth, but when Royce left all his assets to his illegitimate son Benjamin, it was a different story... that kind of hatred ran deeper.
But Nancy was also kind-hearted.
So she struggled.
Nancy looked at Benjamin again and suddenly said, "You can only choose one: wealth or me! If you want to come with me, then donate all of the Walsh family's wealth."
Benjamin's eyes lit up again.
He almost immediately got up, didn't say a word, and grabbed Nancy's dress again.
Nancy's eyes welled up with tears.
She said nothing, took Benjamin's hand, and led him out of the Walsh Villa... out of the place she had lived for over 30 years.
Once outside, he was no longer Royce's illegitimate son, just her brother.
The lawyer was still there, dumbfounded.
The Walsh family was crazy. The dead ones were crazy, and the living ones were even crazier.
One crazier than the next!
Billions of dollars in assets, just donated like that? So much money, just given up?
Grant said calmly, "I'll bring Nancy and Benjamin to handle the donation another day."
He walked out of the Walsh Villa.
Yesterday was rainy, but today the sun was shining brightly.
The autumn flowers in the Walsh Villa were in full bloom... who knows who the next person to enjoy them will be!
Nancy sat in his car.
Since she got pregnant, she mostly sat in the back seat, with her seatbelt on.
Benjamin sat obediently next to her, also buckling his seatbelt, occasionally sneaking glances at Nancy...
Thea had once secretly brought him to the Walsh Villa, and he had seen Nancy. Even then, he thought Nancy was beautiful.
Benjamin had lost his mother.
He was scared, and Nancy was his only relative. He secretly held onto Nancy's finger.
Nancy's whole body stiffened.
Her usually calm face showed rare disdain, but from start to finish, she didn't pull her hand away.
Grant got into the car, glanced at the rearview mirror, and then smiled faintly.
He said to Benjamin, "Benjamin, you don't have any luggage. We'll need to buy you clothes and other things! Luckily, I set aside some money for your tuition and other expenses."
Nancy asked in a low voice, "How much did you set aside?"
Grant replied naturally, "Fifty million dollars! He needs money for clothes, food, and school. If he doesn't succeed in the future, he might not even be able to find a wife. Shouldn't your dad cover that? We can't just raise him for free!"
He spoke harshly on purpose, to make it easier for Nancy to accept.
Starting a business was tough, and he might not succeed.
If that happened, the extra person would be a burden on Nancy and the child...
He didn't want Nancy to suffer, so the money for Benjamin's upbringing had to come from Royce.
Nancy thought for two minutes and understood his point.
She had gone through the loss of her mother and multiple blows, but fortunately, someone was looking out for her.
She felt a bit better and said lightly, "Grant, is it because you had a tough childhood that you're so good at managing money?"
Grant started the car, "Yeah! Mrs. McCall, did you think I was born a CEO?"
Nancy turned her face away, "You're not one now either!"
They talked like this, not paying attention to Benjamin, but Benjamin listened intently... After a while, he cautiously leaned closer to Nancy.
Grant saw this and cleared his throat, "Are you still a baby?"
Benjamin sat back obediently.
Nancy glanced at him, then stuffed a rabbit plush toy into his arms... She could empathize with losing both parents at eight because she was a woman.
She also thought about how Grant lost his father at a young age.
He grew up in such a poor environment.
That was why he was so proud and couldn't let go of his dignity, which was why he and Natalie didn't end up together...
If someone had given young Grant a bit of warmth, maybe the ending would have been different.
"What are you thinking about?"
Grant noticed her distraction and asked softly, his tone gentle.
Nancy was tired. She leaned back in her seat and said softly, "Thinking about your childhood."
Grant was silent for a while, then said, "That was a long time ago! Nancy, we have two kids to take care of now."
Nancy turned and patted Benjamin's little head, "You have three, actually!"
Grant fell silent.
At that moment, far away at The Devereux Mansion, Haven suddenly sneezed.
