Chapter 423 The Best I Can Do for Her Is to Let Go (Part 1)
Chloe hit up one of the nannies.
The nanny was freaking out, scared Chloe would lose it.
Chloe, cool as a cucumber, said, "It's not on you! But you don't gotta listen to Andrew anymore. Just come over and do your thing!"
Half an hour later, two nannies showed up to handle the housework.
Chloe got Gavin settled.
Gavin took a bite of breakfast and whispered, "Dad was here last night, huh?"
"Yep. He even made breakfast!" Chloe ruffled his hair.
She didn't touch the breakfast Andrew made. One bite, and her heart would shatter.
All those years of love, and she still couldn't let go.
Chloe whipped up some instant noodles.
The announcement was at ten, so she had time to drop Gavin at school and hit the gym.
A few bites in, she felt a wave of nausea.
That feeling was weird but familiar.
Chloe's face went pale.
The maid noticed and asked, "Miss Hawkins, you okay?"
Gavin looked worried too.
Chloe clutched her chest and forced a smile. "Maybe the noodles are bad! I'll go freshen up."
She bolted.
The maid checked the noodles and said, "They're not expired!"
In the master bedroom's bathroom, Chloe dry-heaved but didn't throw up, though her chest felt tight.
She splashed cold water on her face.
The cold water didn't help. Her mind was racing with thoughts of that night, the night she told Andrew she wanted to cut back on work and have a little girl.
They did what married couples do, no precautions.
Chloe gently placed her hand on her lower abdomen and looked in the mirror.
Her face was wet.
Her eyes were confused!
She might be pregnant.
Footsteps outside; it was Gavin.
Gavin hugged her from behind and softly said, "Mom, you drank last night. Is your head still hurting?"
Chloe's eyes welled up.
Her mind was a mess, but she turned around and hugged Gavin, saying softly, "I'm fine! Just a little headache!"
"Mommy, get more rest!" Gavin snuggled into her arms.
Chloe smiled faintly. She pushed down the nausea, got her son ready, and drove him to school.
Gavin, with his backpack, happily went to school.
Chloe sat back in the car.
She quietly thought. She drank red wine last night; would it mess with the pregnancy if she was pregnant?
And should she keep this baby?
The more she thought, the more stressed she got. Finally, she decided to hit the hospital for a check-up.
She went quietly, not wanting to alert anyone.
An hour later, the test results were in.
It was positive.
She was nearly five weeks pregnant, and the doc said the heartbeat was strong; it was a healthy baby.
But Chloe couldn't feel happy.
She slowly walked out of the exam room. The hallway was packed with husbands with their wives for prenatal check-ups, and everyone looked happy.
Only she didn't know what to do.
But no matter how fragile she felt, she didn't want to call Andrew because she really wanted to split from him.
If he knew she was pregnant, he would never let go.
Chloe bit her lip and prepared to leave.
At the elevator, she got a call.
It was Andrew.
After much hesitation, she answered, "What's up?"
Andrew was silent for a long time. Just as she was about to hang up, he spoke softly, "The maid said you weren't feeling well. Did you go to the hospital?"
Chloe's eyes welled up.
She gently placed her hand on her lower abdomen and said, "I'm feeling much better now!"
Andrew's voice was very gentle. "That's good! Take care of yourself and eat on time, okay?"
It sounded like he was giving final instructions.
Chloe hesitated for a moment and then asked, "When are we signing the papers?"
Andrew paused, his breathing a bit shaky. After a moment, he said in a low voice, "I'm on a business trip out of town. We'll handle it when I get back."
She felt he was stalling, so she asked, "When will you be back?"
"It'll take three or four months."
By the time he returned, her belly would be big.
Chloe went silent.
Andrew sighed softly on the other end, his tone gentle, like an elder or a lover. "Do you really want to cut ties with me completely? Or are you looking for a younger boyfriend?"
Chloe held back her discomfort. "Yes!"
On the other end, Andrew chuckled lightly.
After the fallout, she rarely laughed, and neither did he.
It seemed like such laughter was from a long time ago.
Andrew responded with a hum.
But his voice trembled slightly. "I'm about to board the plane! I'll have Nathan bring the agreement to you. I've already signed it!"
Finally, it had come to this.
He agreed, which was what she wanted, but Chloe couldn't help but shed tears.
She agreed and abruptly hung up the phone.
She ran to the emergency exit, then she slammed the door shut.
She covered her mouth, leaning against the wall, her body sliding down weakly.
Just a wall away, a mobile hospital bed was being pushed into the elevator, and the person on the bed was Andrew.
He was holding his phone.
After a long time, he said, "Chloe, don't cry!"
But she couldn't hear him!
Nathan was by his side, and even his wife Amanda Lawson had come over to comfort him, "Why do you have to do this? It's not hopeless. Why scare Miss Hawkins? Once words are spoken, they can't be taken back!"
Andrew lay down. His hand gently rested on his abdomen; his stomach had serious issues.
Even if the surgery was successful, there was no guarantee it wouldn't recur.
He was much older than Chloe, and he really couldn't give her anything. No matter how hard he tried, all he could offer was wealth, which was something the Hawkins family lacked the least.
Letting go was the only thing he could do for her.
Nathan was saddened. "Why not wait a bit longer? Maybe when you're better, you won't feel this way! Why be so pessimistic?"
"No more waiting!"
"Nathan, Chloe was only 29 when she was with me. Now she's not that young anymore. If I delay her a few more years, it will be too hard for her to find a suitable partner."
As he said these words, he didn't know that Chloe was just a wall away.
She was carrying his child.
In her most vulnerable moment, she chose to be alone, and he fulfilled that for her.
Sometimes, fulfilling someone's wish was a form of cruelty.
Finally, it was time to let go. She would welcome a new life, and he might end up alone.
But Andrew thought he wouldn't regret this decision.
In the hospital room, the doctor urged several times that it was time for surgery.
But Andrew called in a lawyer and drafted a divorce agreement that was very favorable to Chloe.
He gave Gavin to Chloe.
In addition to cash and property, he specifically named the Devereux Mansion in Copenhegan for Gavin to inherit.
He also specifically mentioned the house on Broadway.
He gave it to Chloe.
The seriously ill, feverish man insisted on finishing reading the thick stack of documents.
Finally, he signed his name.
After signing, Andrew clutched his abdomen, dazed for a long time.
Nathan refused to deliver the documents.
Once delivered, as long as Chloe signed and the procedures were completed, the marriage would be over.
Andrew lay on the hospital bed, cold sweat on his forehead from the pain.
He said, "If you don't go, I won't have the surgery!"
Nathan still wanted to stall and persuade him, but the doctor said, "Nothing is more important than Mr. Devereux's condition right now. If we delay any longer, his life will be in danger!"
Amanda, in tears, said, "Nathan, just go!"
Nathan stomped his foot and left with the documents.
Andrew said, "Tell her not to cry! She always cries a lot."
Heard these words, Amanda kept wiping her tears.
