Chapter 698 Did You Feel Sorry For Me?
Taking care of patients was no big deal for the nurse, but Landon felt super awkward. He shut his eyes a bit, waiting for the nurse to finish up and leave. When he finally looked at Caitlyn, she was still staring blankly. He snapped, "How much longer are you gonna stare?"
Caitlyn noticed his discomfort. She didn't look away and instead said, "In another 20 years, when you're in a wheelchair, this kind of scene will be pretty normal. Might as well get used to it now."
She was totally mocking him for being old!
Landon sneered, "Guess the lesson I gave you that day wasn't enough. Once I'm better, I'll show you just how young I am."
"Don't be a jerk! Landon, when are you gonna let me go?" she said. "I have work to do. I can't be stuck here all the time."
Landon leaned back against the pillow and said softly, "I won't let you go!"
He wanted to see her all the time, but he also worried about her. As they were talking, there was a commotion at the door.
A bodyguard knocked and came in, looking hesitant. He said, "Mr. Carter, there's a couple who wants to see you. We didn't let them in, but they insist on coming in, or they'll jump off the building."
Landon looked at Caitlyn, whose face turned pale. He gently held her hand and said softly, "Go inside and stay with Katelyn. Don't come out."
Caitlyn wanted to say something, but Landon added, "Be good."
At this moment, she didn't argue with him and chose to listen.
As soon as Caitlyn went inside, a middle-aged couple walked into the ward, looking haggard like they hadn't slept in days. They were Leonard's parents, both intellectuals.
They immediately apologized to Landon and even begged for mercy. "Mr. Carter, we apologize for Leonard's mistakes. We hope you won't hold it against him. He has worked so hard to achieve what he has today. He can't be ruined."
Landon, dressed in a blue hospital gown, leaned against the headboard, looking at them coldly.
He spoke slowly, "It's the prosecution that's charging Leonard with several crimes, not me. Besides, when he kidnapped Katelyn, didn't he think about this outcome?"
Hestia was stunned and murmured, "Mr. Carter, you're going to ruin Leonard!"
Hearing her words, Landon only felt it was ironic. No wonder Leonard was easily swayed by Clio's pursuit; he had parents with such twisted values.
Landon sneered, "If I had been accidentally killed by Leonard this time, who would I plead with? Katelyn is still undergoing psychological treatment; who do I turn to? Shouldn't Leonard face legal consequences?"
Hestia was stunned for a long time before she suddenly screamed. "It's Caitlyn. I knew it was that unfortunate person. If Leonard hadn't dated her, he would still be an excellent doctor, not a criminal! It's all her fault. She's here, isn't she? Why doesn't this bitch come out and apologize to Leonard? If Leonard has to go to jail, then Katelyn should go to jail instead... Bitch, come out!"
How could Landon listen to this? He could almost imagine how hurt Caitlyn would be hearing this.
He couldn't move, but with a glance, the bodyguards understood his meaning and started pushing Valentin and Hestia out. But Hestia clung on, saying increasingly harsh words.
Suddenly, Landon said sternly, "Say one more word, and I guarantee Leonard won't see the light of day tomorrow. Just try me."
Hestia was stunned, not believing him.
Landon said coldly, "This is Seattle, not your hometown! There's nothing I can't do if I want to. Besides, isn't it normal for a criminal like Leonard to commit suicide out of guilt?"
Hestia's lips began to tremble as she kept saying, "You can't, you can't."
But in her heart, she knew Landon could. She cried and begged him to spare Leonard. Annoyed by her noise, Landon had her dragged out. The bodyguards bought them two train tickets.
The bodyguard said, "Mr. Carter doesn't want to see you again, and he especially doesn't want Ms. Robinson to see you."
Two train tickets and a $10 million check—buying Leonard ten more years.
Hestia's hands trembled, and the bodyguard said coldly, "If I were you, I'd take the money and leave. You should know that Dr. Dobbins' fees can vary greatly, all depending on Mr. Carter."
The ward was quiet when a bodyguard came in and said softly, "Mr. Carter, they took the train tickets and the check and left!"
Landon was holding a Bible. Hearing this, he chuckled lightly. Who said money couldn't buy anything? In his view, everything could be bought except Caitlyn.
He waved his hand and said, "Leave!"
The bodyguard left, and Landon looked toward the inner suite. From this angle, he couldn't see Caitlyn, but he could hear Katelyn's voice from inside.
Katelyn was feeling better, even comforting Caitlyn. "Heartbroken? It's okay. My dad's still single. Worst case, I'll have him marry you!"
Caitlyn, feeling a bit frustrated, said casually, "I don't want that."
Katelyn said softly, "You don't know how many girls want to marry my dad! And you're being picky."
Hearing this, Caitlyn didn't respond.
At this moment, a weak figure appeared at the door, leaning against the door frame, watching the two of them, and said softly, "I have to be the one to propose."
Caitlyn looked up and saw Landon.
He had just had surgery and was supposed to stay in bed for three days, but he got up one day just to see her. He said, "Don't take it to heart! They've gone back and won't return to Seattle."
Caitlyn felt embarrassed thinking about what Hestia had said. At the same time, she felt conflicted because she knew Leonard had been manipulated by Landon; otherwise, he might not have been sentenced to ten years.
Landon said softly, "Ten million dollars. I bought him ten years; that's enough."
If it were up to Landon, Leonard wouldn't be alive. But now Landon had Katelyn and Caitlyn, and he wanted to do some good.
Caitlyn looked up at him, unable to say a word. Landon managed a slight smile, but sweat kept seeping from his forehead, looking like he was about to collapse.
The nurse came in and exclaimed, "Mr. Carter, do you have a death wish!"
She immediately came over to help him lie down. Landon's eyes were fixed on Caitlyn.
Landon's antics had caused his wound to reopen. He was rushed to the emergency room, received 12 stitches, and returned to the ward, pale as a sheet.
The nurse hung an IV for him and said harshly, "If it tears again, you won't survive!"
She looked at Caitlyn, somewhat dissatisfied, and said, "You're his girlfriend, right? Can you keep an eye on him? If something happens, no one can bear the responsibility."
Caitlyn wanted to explain, but her lips moved without a sound.
The nurse finished scolding and left. Hazel, being sensible, immediately took Katelyn outside to stand guard.
The ward was quiet.
Landon lay there quietly, not like before when he would always provoke Caitlyn. Maybe he was too weak from blood loss to flirt with her.
Caitlyn walked over and sat on the small sofa by the bed. She didn't speak, just gently holding his hand. She lowered her eyes and said softly, "Landon, I can take care of you until you're discharged! But once you're out, we have nothing to do with each other! I won't be with you just because I pity you for using the bitter trick."
He listened to her quietly for a while before asking, "Did you feel sorry for me?"
Caitlyn stubbornly said, "No!"
His hand lifted slightly to touch her chest. After a moment, his voice hoarse, he said, "Liar!"
