Chapter 633 They Finally Treat Each Other with Respect!
Amara picked up the phone.
On the other end, Kingsley was standing at the ward door, one hand on his hip, the other holding his phone. "Jesse's out of the hospital? Why didn't you tell me?"
"I thought you might be busy with work."
"Amara, do you see me as just an extra in your life? If it weren't for Jesse, would you prefer I never showed up?"
Amara felt a twinge in her heart.
She never knew how to talk to Kingsley, the wealthy guy always in control and full of snarky comments.
After they broke up, she often felt lost on how to deal with him.
Kingsley took her silence as agreement. He paused for a moment and then asked Jesse to take the phone. Amara handed it to Jesse. "It's your dad."
Jesse was already in a bad mood.
He grabbed the phone and yelled, "Dad, can you stop fighting with Mom? My head hurts more when you do. I need my medicine, but I hate it!"
Kingsley was caught off guard.
Then he softened a bit and asked gently, "Who told you to say that?"
"I thought of it myself. On TV, other kids' dads are nice to their moms. But you're always mean to Mom! It makes me so unhappy!" Jesse started to cry.
Kingsley felt troubled. He paced back and forth with the phone, but in the end, he decided to comfort Jesse. "I'll be nicer to your mom from now on, okay?"
"Really? You're not lying?"
"No! I keep my promises." Kingsley felt a bit bitter inside, though he couldn't quite explain why.
He didn't spend much time with Jesse, but he couldn't say no to him. Maybe it was because Jesse's expressions reminded him of Amara back in the day.
Kingsley gently hung up, went downstairs, and got into the car. "Let's go see Jesse."
The driver immediately drove off.
Amara had just settled in when Kingsley arrived.
Hailey wisely took Billy away, but he was grumpy. "Mom! You're too scared of Kingsley. If you keep this up, Amara won't get anything out of it! She needs to be more assertive."
Hailey thought about it and realized he was right.
Kingsley's sudden visit caught Amara off guard, but for Jesse's sake, she was willing to get along. So she left them alone and went to the kitchen to cook.
As Amara opened the fridge, she heard Kingsley's voice behind her. "Make some barbecue."
Amara was a bit surprised but responded softly.
His attitude had suddenly improved, and Amara didn't mind him spending time with Jesse. Still, she preferred meeting Kingsley outside in the future.
The house started to feel warmer.
Kingsley took off his coat and helped Jesse with his jacket. He was busy, so he leaned on the sofa, using his laptop for work while Jesse played with building blocks beside him.
He occasionally patted Jesse's little head, and Jesse loved it.
Amara turned around and saw this, feeling a bit emotional that it wasn't just him who remembered the past.
Because of Jesse, their interactions became more civil. Kingsley stopped with the sarcastic remarks, and Amara thought that was good.
After dinner, while Amara was washing dishes, he walked into the kitchen and slid the door closed.
Amara turned slightly, feeling a bit defensive.
Kingsley placed a pack of cigarettes on the counter, took one out, and lit it. Looking at her profile, he said calmly, "I have something to discuss with you."
"What is it?"
Kingsley took a deep drag on the cigarette, exhaled the smoke, and said, "This place is too small. Let's move to that villa."
Afraid she might misunderstand, he added, "I can transfer the house to you! I'll let you know in advance when I come to see Jesse. Besides, a bigger place would be more convenient."
He gestured around the kitchen. "For example, if I have something to discuss with you, we wouldn't have to squeeze in here."
Amara blushed. She continued washing the dishes, and after a while, she said, "I am indeed planning to move, but not into your villa. You can leave the villa for Jesse, but let's wait until he's a bit older."
Kingsley leaned against the fridge, eyeing her. "Is my stuff really that hard to accept? You took what Landon gave you."
Amara replied softly, "I work at his company. It's only fair to take a salary."
Kingsley stubbed out his cigarette.
He leaned in closer, looking down at her, his voice low. "You could work for me too. I can pay you a lot more."
Amara just gave a faint smile.
Surprisingly, he didn't push it, not wanting to force her.
He opened the door, putting on his coat to leave. Jesse clung to his shoulder, his little arms wrapped around him for a long time.
"Alright. If you miss me, just call," Kingsley patted Jesse gently, speaking softly. He then took out a small children's phone from his pocket, specially customized, with only two numbers programmed in—his and Amara's.
He taught Jesse how to use it.
Jesse picked it up quickly, and his mood brightened. When Kingsley left, Jesse gave him a big kiss.
Amara walked him to the door.
Kingsley gave her a deep look, said nothing, and turned to go downstairs.
Early in the morning, Hailey returned, worried about making Amara late for work.
Hailey cleared her throat. "Kingsley didn't stay the night?"
Amara paused while drinking her milk. "I've separated from him. Let's not bring this up again."
Hailey quickly apologized for being nosy.
Amara knew she meant well, but their separation was well thought out. Even now, despite his occasional bad attitude, neither of them regretted it.
They weren't kids anymore; they wouldn't change their minds on a whim.
She recounted the conversation about the house from the previous night. Hailey agreed with her decision. "That's the way it should be! The future is the future. For now, we can take care of Jesse ourselves without troubling Kingsley's side, so they don't look down on us."
Hailey still felt uneasy. She wondered, 'Could Kingsley really be with Hannah? It doesn't seem like it!'
She didn't dare ask. Amara finished her breakfast and headed to the office.
When Amara stepped into the Carter Group's branch office, her status had changed. The branch was struggling, and Amara held a 10-hour meeting, with only a one-hour break for lunch.
After the meeting, everyone was exhausted.
Amara returned to her office, newly renovated, about 600 square feet and had an excellent view.
She sipped her coffee, standing by the window, deep in thought. Her secretary came in quietly. "Ms. Butler, I heard that Mr. Palmer enjoys leisure activities like fishing and golf, things older men usually like. Maybe you should find someone to accompany him?"
Amara walked back to her desk, setting down her coffee cup.
She asked, "Did you find out if Mr. Palmer dislikes discussing business during his leisure time? Having someone else might annoy him."
She checked her schedule and decided to practice golf that afternoon.
At 4 PM, Amara drove to a well-known club in Syeattel. She got a membership and hired a private coach. After changing clothes, she walked out and ran into Kingsley, who was followed by a group.
However, beside Kingsley was a very pretty A-list actress, Arabella Fields. Standing at least 5'8", she looked tall and beautiful, quite a match for Kingsley.
Seeing Amara, the Hawkins Group people didn't dare speak.
Kingsley, however, casually lifted his golf club and asked, "Here to practice? Is Jesse being taken care of?"
His tone was completely that of an old married couple.
Arabella didn't get upset; she even smiled slightly at Amara, quite gracefully. Amara thought, 'Celebrities really do have a lot of poise.'
She didn't act petty either and nodded. "Hailey is at home taking care of Jesse. Mr. Hawkins, I won't disturb you. Excuse me." Then she left.
Kingsley walked to the outdoor course and started playing. He looked exceptionally good in casual wear, and Arabella was quite taken with him. She had come to discuss an endorsement deal and was impressed by how young and capable Kingsley was.
Arabella couldn't help but ask, "Who was that just now? Your wife?"
She actually knew she wasn't; otherwise, Amara wouldn't have called him Mr. Hawkins.
