Chapter 601 Mr. Hawkins Is Getting Married, I Will Definitely Attend the Wedding!
After shooting off the message, Kingsley just zoned out for a while.
Even when Hannah slipped into a new dress and did a shy little twirl in front of him, he didn't even notice. Hannah felt a bit bummed by his lack of reaction, but she really liked him, so she just sucked it up. "Kingsley, look at me!"
Kingsley snapped back to reality and glanced at Hannah. Honestly, he didn't dislike her; he just didn't have any real feelings for her.
If he married Hannah, his life would probably be pretty standard. He would have a solid career, a nice wife, and maybe a couple of cute kids. But late at night, he might still think about the past.
Kingsley said flatly, "You look nice."
His response was half-hearted, but Hannah was thrilled. She spun around, playing with her dress, and teased, "I bet you didn't even notice the color of my dress."
"Isn't it pink?"
The nearby staff tried not to laugh.
Hannah's pride took a hit, but she still said softly, "This one is white."
Kingsley shrugged. "White looks nice too."
Hannah's face fell.
Before she could say anything, Kingsley got up and headed to the hallway to smoke. Tears welled up in Hannah's eyes, and the staff tried to comfort her. "Men never get a girl's thoughts. Mr. Hawkins is already pretty good."
Hannah wiped her tears and said, "I don't know how Ms. Butler put up with him when she was his secretary."
The staff went quiet.
They could tell Kingsley and Amara had some history, but Hannah was clueless.
Just as the staff was about to comfort her, Kingsley finished his cigarette and came back.
Hannah immediately brightened up, looking at Kingsley with admiration.
In the black limo, Kingsley pulled out his laptop to work, barely paying attention to Hannah. She leaned over and whispered, "Aren't you going to keep me company?"
Without looking up, Kingsley said, "If you're bored, I can have the driver take you back."
Hannah felt like crying again.
She held it in, forcing a sweet smile. "Not really. You go ahead with your work."
Her understanding finally got her a glance from him.
Kingsley looked up at her. Honestly, Hannah had a good temper, and it wasn't fake, but it didn't attract him at all; it just bored him.
He knew it shouldn't be like this.
They could probably get married. Following the usual steps, he should take the time and effort to be with her, treat her well, and eventually fall in love. It wouldn't take much from him, and she would be really happy.
Kingsley shut his laptop.
He turned to look at Hannah, his gaze so intense it made her knees weak. She turned away, feeling awkward. Kingsley reached out and touched her hair, only to find his hand covered in stiff hair gel.
Hannah was still blushing, but he had already pulled his hand back, saying coolly, "We're almost at the banquet."
The vibe in the car felt a bit charged, but Hannah was the only one feeling it.
Kingsley didn't expect to see Amara again so soon at this exclusive elite banquet.
Landon's date had some issues, so tonight Amara was with him. She wore a black fitted dress that perfectly highlighted her curves.
Amara had just a necklace on, but it added to her elegance rather than making her look plain.
Right now, Amara was holding Landon's arm, sipping red wine, and mingling with the upper-class crowd like it was nothing. A lot of guys were eyeing her with interest.
Kingsley knew that look too well; it meant they wanted to get involved with her.
Kingsley watched Amara's flawless makeup, slightly dazed, realizing she had changed a lot over the years. She was more feminine and confident now.
Were there always a lot of guys around her?
Had she had other lovers over the years?
But these thoughts were fleeting. Kingsley wouldn't ask such questions in public, especially since they were nothing to each other now.
"That's Ms. Butler!" Hannah said excitedly. She looked up at Kingsley, a bit coquettishly. "Shall we go say hello? Her dress is stunning; how did she get such an amazing figure, with that waist and those curves?"
After saying that, Hannah smiled shyly.
Kingsley held a wine glass and naturally looked over.
His gaze lingered on Amara's figure, who was indeed much more slender and voluptuous than before, looking very enticing.
Amara inadvertently turned her head and saw them. The smile on her lips froze slightly, then she forced a smile as a greeting.
Landon noticed her unusual behavior and looked over. "Isn't this Mr. Hawkins? What a coincidence."
Landon walked over, and Amara, as his secretary, had to follow. Landon looked at Kingsley and smiled. "Is this your new girlfriend? You two look very well-matched."
Landon even turned to Amara and asked, "Don't you think so?"
Landon's compliment made Hannah blush. "Thank you, Mr. Carter."
But Kingsley kept his eyes locked on Amara, almost demanding an answer from her. In the past, Amara would have been on the verge of tears, but after three years, she had changed.
Amara smiled gently. "I agree."
Before Landon could stir the pot further, Kingsley said coldly, "Really? Is that what you think? Sometimes I wonder if I make the wrong choices."
Amara responded calmly, "Success always comes from learning from failures, Mr. Hawkins, doesn't it?"
Kingsley sneered, "You seem to have it all figured out."
Amara replied, "I have to move forward!"
The atmosphere grew tense.
Hannah looked at them, puzzled. Didn't they know each other?
Amara gave her a gentle smile and explained, "When I worked at the Hawkins Group, we had some disagreements at work. It was a bit unpleasant when I left, but I think Mr. Hawkins has long forgotten about it and doesn't care anymore."
Hannah quickly said, "Yes, Kingsley wouldn't be petty."
Amara's words made Landon laugh out loud.
Who would have thought that the once timid Amara could now hold her own? Landon felt both admiration and pride as he smiled at Kingsley. "Your girlfriend is great. We look forward to attending your wedding."
Kingsley's face darkened.
Staring at Amara's smiling face, he said word by word, "I will definitely invite you to attend."
Landon chuckled, feeling it was enough, and took Amara to mingle with others.
Kingsley tilted his head back and downed his drink in one gulp.
The strong liquor burned his throat, and his heart ached faintly. Kingsley squinted slightly, his gaze following Amara. In his slightly drunken state, he gazed at Amara with deep affection.
Compared to Kingsley, Amara seemed much more composed.
She seemed to have let go of the past, treating Kingsley as just someone she used to know, nodding politely when they met, with no lingering feelings.
In the restroom, Kingsley and Amara ran into each other.
Kingsley leaned against the wall, smoking. After finishing half a cigarette, Amara came out of the women's restroom, gently smoothing her dress as she walked. Her lowered eyes had a touch of softness, very captivating.
But Kingsley knew she hadn't forgiven him and still treated him with coldness.
Finally, they were alone and could talk about the past.
"When are you going back to Syeattel?" Kingsley's voice was a bit hoarse and tinged with bitterness.
Amara looked up, slightly surprised.
But she quickly put on a professional smile. She walked to the sink, turned on the golden faucet, and washed her hands. After about half a minute, she spoke softly, "It's been about two years."
Kingsley watched her, feeling a mix of emotions he couldn't quite describe.
He asked, "Do you often go out with Landon for social events?"
Amara's body paused slightly.
Then she smiled, turned off the faucet, and looked at him. "Is it illegal for me to attend social events? Or are you, Mr. Hawkins, eager to track my whereabouts after all these years? But don't forget, you once said I wasn't qualified to marry into the Hawkins Family, so don't ask such ambiguous questions. Besides, didn't you bring your girlfriend? She's quite pretty and seems to come from a good family."
She leaned against the sink.
This was a high-end club, even the restroom had crystal chandeliers. The light refracted on her face, adding a touch of allure to her maturity.
Kingsley couldn't help but take a step forward, getting so close that she had to lean back slightly to avoid him, but Amara didn't say anything.
Kingsley sneered, "That sounds like jealousy."
Amara chuckled softly, "Mr. Hawkins, you're overthinking. I was naive in the past, but now I have some self-awareness. Someone like me is nowhere near your level; we're not a good match at all."
With that, she pushed him away by his shoulder.
She brushed past him without any hesitation, but the touch and warmth of her fingers on his shoulder lingered in Kingsley's mind. He felt a stir in his heart.
Kingsley looked ahead and saw a man approaching Amara, who engaged in a calm conversation with him for about two minutes before returning to Landon's side.
There were quite a few socialites at the event.
But most men's eyes were on Amara. She combined a mature grace with a youthful charm.
Kingsley turned his head and stubbed out his cigarette.
When he looked again, Amara was no longer in the banquet hall. Kingsley should have gone to check, but he didn't.
Kingsley stayed alone in the restroom, wanting some time to himself.
When he left the club, it was nearly 11 PM. Kingsley wasn't in high spirits, but Hannah was clearly happy. She hadn't had the chance to attend such events before and couldn't help but share her excitement in the elevator.
As they reached the first floor and Kingsley was about to get into the car, he saw Amara.
