Chapter 490 Gavin, Are You Crazy?
Gavin gripped the steering wheel with one hand, his face tight but his voice lazy. "It's already a mess. Me coming back won't fix anything!"
Andrew cursed, "You bastard!"
Annoyed, Gavin hung up the phone.
The car stopped at a red light, and his eyes looked a bit lost.
He had tried. After breaking up with Molly, he tried to move on with Sarah. But even with her stunning looks, he felt nothing. He couldn't picture a future with her, not even if they stayed out of each other's way.
He didn't want kids with Sarah.
All of Gavin's intimate moments were with Molly.
They were each other's firsts. He felt good and never wondered about being with other women. Maybe he just wasn't that into it, or maybe Molly was enough for him.
Gavin leaned back, gently bumping his head against the seat.
A honk from behind snapped him out of it; the light had turned green. Gavin started driving again.
When he got to the company, he parked, unbuckled, and thought for a moment before calling Molly. She didn't pick up. Was she crying or just mad at him?
Frustrated, Gavin called Lola. She answered quickly, and he got straight to the point, "Invite Molly to dinner."
Lola chuckled, "Why should I play chaperone for your little lover?"
Gavin's voice turned cold, "Isn't there an oil deal Kingsley wants? I'll give it to him."
"But that's a win for Kingsley. What's in it for me?"
Gavin gritted his teeth, "Name your price, I'll agree."
Lola agreed, sounding pleased.
Gavin hung up. He knew he liked Molly, but he couldn't give her much. Even without Sarah, it wouldn't work between them.
Gavin walked into the company, and Aria looked surprised to see him.
Wasn't he supposed to be with Sarah, trying on wedding dresses?
Gavin shrugged off his coat as he walked into his office, "Bring me the Diamond Corporation case!"
Aria nodded, thinking, 'Only a heartbroken guy would dive into work like this.'
Soon, she brought over a stack of documents.
Gavin worked non-stop until Aria came in at the end of the day, looking conflicted. "Gavin, Andrew called. He wants you home for dinner."
Gavin didn't even look up, "Is he being nice?"
He asked her to repeat it, and finally, Aria said, "He said, 'Tell that bastard Gavin to get home!'" She looked nervous after saying it.
Gavin closed the file with a smirk, "That sounds more like him."
Aria forced a smile.
Gavin shut down his computer and left. Aria followed, whispering, "Miss Hughes called several times. I turned them all down."
Gavin paused, "Aria, you deserve a raise!"
Aria's face lit up.
Gavin went downstairs, got into his car, and drove home quickly.
Andrew was having dinner with Chloe, speaking gently like he used to. Gavin sat down, took a couple of bites, and noticed Andrew glaring at him.
Gavin grinned, "Dad, why do you always stay in Syeattel? Why not head back to Copenhagen? Maybe my sister's sneaking around behind your back!"
"Don't use her as an excuse. Before your grandmother passed, you promised you'd get married and have kids ASAP!"
Chloe handed Gavin a piece of fish and looked at Andrew, "It's just a little lovers' spat. We broke up so many times back then. Maybe you should reflect on yourself."
Andrew, fuming, pointed at Gavin, "Come upstairs after dinner. We need to talk!"
Gavin just smiled faintly.
Seeing Chloe about to speak, Andrew added, "Don't baby him! He's always up to something rebellious."
Chloe asked, "What did he do?"
Andrew couldn't even say it and stormed upstairs in anger.
Chloe turned back to Gavin, "Don't mind him, he's going through a second midlife crisis."
Gavin finished his meal slowly, smiled gently at Chloe, and said, "Mom, I'm sorry!"
Chloe sighed, "It's just about having grandkids. Honestly, I don't want you to rush into marriage."
Gavin couldn't help but hug her.
As he headed upstairs, Chloe, still worried, called out, "Talk to Andrew properly, don't make him angrier."
Gavin nodded. He went upstairs, and as soon as Andrew saw him, he sneered, "What's going on with you and Sarah?"
Andrew didn't particularly like Sarah either. Maybe deep down, he thought Gavin getting married would mean he was settled.
Andrew lit a cigarette, pointed at Gavin, "Well, say something!"
Gavin smiled, sat across from Andrew, lit a cigarette, took a slow drag, and said calmly, "No feelings, so we broke up."
"You think I'm an idiot?"
Gavin suddenly got serious. He walked to the door, locked it, and with his hand still on the doorknob, he asked in a low voice, "Dad, what do you want me to say? That I only like Molly and have no interest in Sarah at all? Or that even if I married Sarah, I'd regret it and still see Molly?"
Andrew couldn't control his roar, "Gavin, are you crazy?"
Gavin looked at Andrew calmly and said, "You brought her into our home. You let her into my life. If it weren't for that, I'd probably be looking for a woman to marry now, without expecting any feelings."
Andrew calmed down a bit, closed his eyes slightly, "We can't change the past! But I brought her back not for you to take revenge on her or play with her feelings."
"Dad! I was serious!" Gavin said softly.
From childhood to adulthood, Gavin had never shown interest in women. But now, he was completely captivated by Molly.
Andrew suppressed his temper, "I don't agree! Gavin, it's not just for you, but for our family and Molly. If she marries into our family and Chloe doesn't like her, how will they get along? You know Molly's temperament."
Gavin lowered his eyes and said softly, "Dad, have you ever thought that maybe this is the only love I'll ever have?"
He didn't try to persuade Andrew any further; in fact, he was even calmer than before. "Dad, let's leave it at that. I'll figure out my own stuff after Molly gets married."
Andrew looked at Gavin, slightly stunned. Gavin had never shown any signs of pain regarding this relationship, but now, his eyes revealed not only pain but also confusion, which he couldn't hide.
Andrew's tone softened. He usually doted on his kids, but this was serious, and he couldn't agree easily. He wanted to say more, but Gavin interrupted him.
"Let's leave it at that!" Gavin said, then opened the door and walked out.
Chloe was standing at the door with a phone in her hand. Maurice had just called her, requesting a meeting. Over the years, they had kept their distance from each other, but this time, the meeting was likely about Gavin and Sarah. It seemed the Hughes Family was quite concerned about this marriage.
Chloe felt very conflicted; she could tell Gavin didn't like Sarah. Chloe asked softly, "Gavin, do you have a girl you like? Actually, Andrew and I don't care much about family status. As long as you like the girl and she's well-behaved and sensible, nothing else matters."
Gavin felt a bit sad hearing this and gave Chloe a hug. The gril he had fallen for was probably the one Chloe would find hardest to accept. Then he said softly, "I'm fine, you should rest early."
Chloe watched him go upstairs, clearly worried about him. Once he was out of sight, she walked into the study and saw Andrew sitting there smoking. She went over and took the cigarette away, and Andrew looked at her. "Your health isn't great; you should cut back on smoking."
Andrew gently closed his eyes.
Chloe gently massaged him and said softly, "Maurice just called me; he wants to meet. I think he wants to talk about Gavin and Sarah."
Andrew said generously, "Alright. You saw Gavin's attitude just now; you know what to say." Andrew ended up compromising halfway.
Chloe looked at Andrew, hesitated, and asked, "Andrew, are you and Gavin hiding something from me?"
Andrew patted her head and whispered, "There's nothing; don't overthink it!"
At noon, Maurice booked a private room at Syeattel's finest restaurant for lunch with Chloe. Although they had briefly dated and didn't end up together, they didn't part on bad terms and had a peaceful breakup.
Maurice was very considerate, and Chloe felt a bit guilty. She said softly, "Maurice, I know your purpose today, but Gavin is not a child anymore. It can't be decided by Andrew and me."
Maurice was a gentleman. He considered for a moment and said, "Sarah likes Gavin a lot, but it seems Gavin has someone in his heart. Chloe, you should understand the benefits our three families' union would bring."
Chloe said apologetically, "I don't know much about business matters, and Andrew rarely discusses them with me."
Maurice was stunned. After a moment, he laughed. Over the years, Chloe hadn't changed.
He couldn't help but think of Molly. After Sarah mentioned her at home, Zachary Hughes, his elder brother, had asked him to handle it. He had gone to see her; she was a quiet and reserved girl, somewhat similar to Chloe in temperament.
Of course, she was very beautiful.
Zachary's intention was to make things clear, so the Devereux Family would cause a scene, making it impossible for Gavin and Molly to be together, thus preserving the Hughes Family's marriage arrangement.
But Maurice had feelings for Chloe when he was young.
Looking at her, he found it hard to speak.
In the end, he said a few unrelated things and muddled through the matter.
Chloe went back. Andrew was waiting for her to report, but she only said the meal was good, the restaurant had a new chef, and the specialty dishes were memorable.
Andrew couldn't help but say, "I asked you to handle their engagement, not to have a date with Maurice."
Chloe teased him on purpose, "We didn't just date once or twice when we were young. You were quite generous back then, even blessing me. What, getting old has made you less tolerant?"
Andrew, annoyed, picked Chloe up and threw her onto the soft bed.
Chloe resisted a bit. She pushed against his shoulder and said softly, "We're not young anymore! Aren't you embarrassed?"
Andrew's hand slipped under her clothes, making her comfortable, and he teased her, "I may be old, but you're still young. Don't you ever want it?"
Chloe blushed.
Soon, Andrew had her clothes off and they had a passionate moment.
Afterward, Chloe pinched his waist. She felt a bit sore and wanted to take a bath.
Andrew took a tube of ointment from the bedside table, knelt down, and applied it to her, saying gently, "I overdid it, just mad at you for having dinner with another man and coming back to tease me."
Chloe felt sweet inside. She hugged Andrew's shoulders, acting coy, and said softly, "Maurice said Gavin has someone in his heart. Andrew, has Gavin ever mentioned it to you?"
Andrew narrowed his eyes slightly.
Maurice was bold to say such things in front of Chloe. If this matter were exposed, Chloe, Gavin, and Molly would all be hurt. He wouldn't allow such a thing to happen.
Andrew comforted Chloe and made a phone call. The person on the other end said softly, "Yes, Andrew, I understand!"
The next day, the Hughes Family's company stock plummeted!
Sarah was harshly criticized at the shareholders' meeting because reliable sources said the company targeting them was the Devereux Group's overseas company.
Sarah thought it was Gavin's doing. After leaving the meeting room, she called Gavin, "Gavin! You really went all out!"
Gavin looked at Andrew on the sofa and didn't deny it.
Sarah said something else, and after listening, he hung up the phone and frowned slightly, "Dad, was it you?"
