Chapter 761 Lola, I Have a Girlfriend!
Austin, being young and unable to hide his thoughts, blurted out, "So, are you never gonna get better?"
Johnny's gaze was intense.
He straightforwardly replied to Austin, "Maybe."
Austin, though younger than Angelina, was more mature.
Hearing this, he glanced at Johnny's leg, as if trying to figure something out. After a long pause, he spoke softly but firmly, "If you never get better, I'll take care of Stella for you."
With that, he went back to playing with Stella.
Johnny's eyes grew moist. He wondered if he had made the wrong choice back then.
The kids were all very well-behaved.
Johnny came downstairs to have lunch with them. The kids had a habit of taking naps after lunch, and in the afternoon, Felicity took Angelina and Austin to their tutoring classes, leaving Johnny to take care of Stella upstairs.
The housekeeper offered to help, but Johnny insisted on doing it himself.
By evening, the sky was painted with a beautiful sunset.
Johnny received an important call from the office and went to the study to handle some work. Stella was playing on the bedroom carpet, surrounded by several of her favorite toys.
The sound of a car pulling into the driveway echoed through the yard.
Johnny was so engrossed in his call that he didn't notice the footsteps coming up the stairs, getting closer and closer.
Lola arrived in a hurry because Patrick was gravely ill. She had rushed back from out of town after receiving a call.
She didn't even have time to think about their divorce and went straight into the master bedroom.
In the bedroom, Stella was sitting on the carpet in a little dress, playing with a pile of toys and photos scattered around. At first, Lola didn't notice, but as she got closer, she saw something unusual.
The photos were all of her, taken over the past few months while she was abroad.
In the square, the park, the mall... various places.
Every single one was of her!
Stella continued playing, while Lola stood there, stunned, flipping through the photos one by one.
At the bedroom door, the sound of a wheelchair could be heard.
Seeing Lola, Johnny was surprised, "Why are you back..."
Before he could finish, he noticed the photos in her hand.
The air grew silent.
After a long pause, Lola spoke softly, "Johnny, when we separated, you said..."
Johnny interrupted her.
He wheeled himself into the room, his face expressionless, and calmly told her, "It was just a silly thing I couldn't let go of at the time. It doesn't mean anything! Lola, I have a girlfriend now."
This was unexpected for Lola.
She hadn't even had time to feel awkward before Johnny wheeled over, bent down, and picked up all the photos, handing them to her, "These were just things I hadn't gotten around to dealing with."
Lola stared at him.
Johnny gave a faint smile and even pulled out his phone, showing her a picture. It was of a very beautiful woman, not only pretty but also elegant.
He said, "We just started seeing each other recently, so you really don't need to worry about me bothering you anymore."
Lola didn't bother with the photos or question Johnny's words.
She needed to take Stella to the hospital.
Patrick might not make it through the next few days.
She said this to Johnny, probably because she was too anxious. But Johnny immediately replied, "I'll drive you to the hospital."
His words were left unfinished, hanging on the tip of his tongue.
How could he say he would drive? He still needed a wheelchair, but he had offered to take her.
At that moment, Johnny finally came to his senses.
His hands clenched and unclenched, then clenched again. He heard his own voice, "Lola, I have a girlfriend now, so it's not convenient for me to go."
Johnny felt dazed after saying that.
He felt like a weak man, unable to even see Patrick one last time because of a pitiful sense of pride. If he could, he would have slapped himself.
Lola was also taken aback.
She hadn't expected Johnny to avoid her to this extent. They were divorced, but Patrick had been very kind to Johnny when he was young.
She remembered when Johnny was sick as a child, and his parents were out of town. It was Patrick who stayed with him for a whole day and night.
Lola felt disappointed.
But she said nothing, picking up Stella and leaving.
Stella was reluctant, clinging to Lola's shoulder and calling out, her eyes seriously looking at Johnny, tears welling up, ready to fall.
"Daddy... Daddy..."
Johnny's heart ached, his fingers clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned white.
Moments later, Lola was out of sight.
The sound of footsteps echoed down the stairs, quick and urgent.
Johnny's body slumped in the wheelchair, gasping for breath, a feeling of suffocation washing over him. Just then, footsteps sounded again on the stairs, this time it was Felicity.
Felicity had already heard the news downstairs.
Now, she was anxious.
She was about to speak when Johnny said in a calm voice, "Call her for me. I need her to help me put on a show."
Felicity was truly troubled and didn't want to make that call.
Johnny had a tough time these past few years. If Lola knew, maybe they still had a chance!
But if this scene continued, there might never be a chance again.
Felicity hesitated but tried to persuade him, "Mr. Flores, maybe you should reconsider."
"No need to reconsider!"
Johnny sat in his wheelchair, his tone cold and indifferent, "You probably think if Lola knew the truth, I'd still have a chance. But is that really a chance? It's not... it's just pity and sympathy. I don't need pity, and I can't imagine Lola taking care of a cripple every day."
Felicity couldn't help but say, "You're not!"
Johnny looked down at his left leg, his Adam's apple bobbing slightly. How could he not be a cripple? Even if one day he could walk almost normally, the scars on his leg would always remain.
He clenched his fist, "Do as I say!"
Felicity had no choice but to make the call.
