Chapter 26: A Family of Jerks

Just then, Chloe called. Ethan was too upset to answer, but after several calls, he finally picked up.

"Ethan, where are you? My hand hurts a lot. Can you come over and put some ointment on it? My parents are coming over tomorrow. They might want to discuss our wedding. Make sure Daisy comes, too," Chloe said.

Ethan's mind was filled with the image of Charlotte being kissed by Frederick. He felt numb all over. Chloe kept urging him, so he finally replied, "Got it."

After hanging up, he thought, 'It's no big deal.'

A man with power could get anything he wanted. Even if twenty years passed, he wouldn't regret today's decision.

The next afternoon, Charlotte was discharged from the hospital.

She held her phone, hesitating whether to call or text Frederick to thank him.

After much deliberation, she decided against it.

Charlotte completed the discharge procedures, grabbed her luggage, and planned to go home first before heading to the music center to work in the afternoon.
As Charlotte walked out of the inpatient department, she ran into some familiar faces at the entrance: Ethan's mother, Daisy, and his sister, Jenny Cooper.

They were carrying several bags of imported fruits, chatting as they walked. They were probably there to see Chloe. When they saw Charlotte, everyone felt a bit awkward.

Charlotte nodded slightly and was about to leave.

Daisy called out to her, speaking gently, "Charlotte, I have something to tell you."

Jenny tugged at Daisy's sleeve and said petulantly, "Mom, Ethan already broke up with her. What else is there to say?"

Daisy was shrewd. She knew exactly what Ethan had been up to. Her goal now was to make sure Charlotte stayed away from Ethan to avoid ruining his happiness.

Daisy asked Jenny to leave first.

Jenny snorted and walked away.

Once Jenny was gone, Daisy put on a smile and said to Charlotte, "Charlotte, normally, we'd grab a coffee and catch up. But Chloe's parents are here to talk about the wedding, so I'm swamped today."

Charlotte felt a chill in her heart.

In the past, when the Cooper family was in trouble, Charlotte gave them all her money to help out. Ethan's mother used to say she was the only daughter-in-law of the Cooper family and that if Ethan ever wronged her, she wouldn't let him off.

How long had it been? And now everything had changed.

Charlotte gave a faint smile.

Seeing her cold demeanor, Daisy felt a bit embarrassed but still added, "Actually, you're great! I was really sorry to see you and Ethan break up. Now that Ethan has found his happiness, you should also think about your own. Don't waste your youth."

Charlotte felt disgusted.

She didn't want to respond, but seeing someone appear around the corner, she said firmly, "Don't worry, I won't be that stubborn!"

Daisy smiled. "I'm glad to hear that."

She turned to find Chloe but then saw Ethan's sullen face.

Ethan had one hand in his pocket and stared coldly at Charlotte. "Mom, let's go!"

Daisy forced a smile and left, but Ethan stayed.

Charlotte felt a chill all over.

She had lost not just love but also dignity.

Ethan sneered, "Feeling bad? No one asked you to do all that! Charlotte, your love is a pure, self-righteous sacrifice! But you're not stupid; you know how to find a rich guy now!"

Charlotte shot back with a cold smile. "Thanks for your advice, Mr. Cooper."

Ethan's narrow, attractive eyes clouded over. He chuckled instead of getting mad. "You even slept with Frederick; why didn't he lend a hand? Charlotte, you can't control a man like Frederick. You'll regret it someday!"

Charlotte lowered her eyes and smiled faintly. "Why do I have to regret it? Ethan, what else do you think I have to lose?"

Without explaining, Charlotte turned and walked away without looking back.

Ethan stood there for a long time before sneering, "Charlotte, don't push me!"
