Chapter 699 I'm really sorry for making Mr. Carter feel this way
Landon's hand stayed on Caitlyn, feeling her heartbeat race. He knew her too well; every time she lied, her ears turned a faint red, and her heartbeat sped up.
This kind of closeness wasn't supposed to be theirs. Caitlyn tried to push his hand away, but instead, Landon held her hand, making her feel her own heartbeat. "It's beating so fast," he said.
Caitlyn snapped, "Let go! Landon, you jerk."
Landon looked at her flushed face and chuckled. He did let go but lay back on the pillow and casually said, "That day we did it several times, and you kept holding onto my neck, begging me not to leave."
Caitlyn turned her face away and said, "You need to forget about that day."
"I can't forget! I relive it over and over, every single day," Landon replied.
Caitlyn thought to herself that he really was a rogue. She sneered, "Well, I'm sorry for making you so frustrated."
Their conversation wasn't as intimate as it used to be, but it wasn't as distant as it had been recently either. Caitlyn thought that Landon probably just felt their relationship had changed because of their one-night stand.
However, she decided that once he was discharged, she would leave.
At that moment, the door to the hospital room opened, and a familiar face peeked in. It was Amara's older brother, Billy, holding Nicole's hand.
Billy was doing quite well in business now, with a house and a car, and had settled in Seattle. But compared to Landon, he was still far behind.
He was carrying some things and bobbing his head. He said, "Mr. Carter, I heard you were injured, so I dropped everything to come see you."
He put down the things and gently pushed Nicole. "Say hello to Mr. Carter. He helped you with your school."
Nicole had grown up quite a bit, and she was quite poised.
Out of respect for Amara, Landon was always kind to Billy's family. However, now that he was alone with Caitlyn, Billy's interruption really annoyed him.
Yet he smiled warmly and said, "It's just a minor injury."
Billy disagreed, "Amara called my mom and said you almost died. My mom, being soft-hearted and getting on in years, cried for a long time at home, saying good people don't get good rewards."
Hearing this, Landon couldn't smile anymore.
Billy, with his business-like attitude, sat by the bed, almost wanting to hold Landon's hand and chat warmly... After a while, Caitlyn spoke up, "Billy, he only got a few stitches."
Billy immediately panicked and responded, "I didn't know."
He added, "Mr. Carter, you should rest well and avoid any strenuous activities... Although men only behave when they're dead, you have so much money left to spend, so you must take care of yourself."
His words were quite cutting, and Nicole giggled.
Landon found Billy annoying, but fortunately, he left. Caitlyn closed the door and was about to talk to Landon, but when she turned around, she saw him asleep with a tired look on his face.
Seeing this, she was slightly stunned. In her memory, Landon never seemed to get tired.
Whether it was in his career or in bed, he was like a perpetual motion machine, full of energy.
It was the first time she saw him like this.
She quietly watched him sleep, then slowly walked over to cover him with a blanket. Her hand was gently held, and Landon's voice was hoarse. "Caitlyn..."
Landon slept for 36 hours straight, and Caitlyn was afraid he might die.
After the doctor checked Landon, he reassured her, "Mr. Carter is just very tired! He'll wake up naturally once he's had enough sleep."Caitlyn finally felt a wave of relief.
Early in the morning, Hazel showed up with Katelyn, who was doing much better and was now living at home.
While making breakfast, Hazel asked, "Mr. Carter still out cold?"
Caitlyn replied, "Yeah, still sleeping."
Hazel told Caitlyn to eat breakfast. Katelyn refused to eat at home and insisted on eating with Caitlyn. She comforted Caitlyn, saying, "My dad will be fine. He'll definitely wake up and marry you."
Caitlyn shot her a look.
Katelyn, with her head down, eating breakfast, mumbled, "You're just being stubborn! You clearly like Dad."
Caitlyn couldn't be bothered to explain to her.
Just then, the person on the bed stirred and spoke in a hoarse voice, "Katelyn?"
"Dad!" Katelyn stopped eating and immediately ran over, throwing herself at Landon's bedside.
Even though she said she wasn't scared, she was crying now.
Landon kissed Katelyn and gently said, "Dad is just a bit tired."
Katelyn hugged his neck, very close to him, and whispered, "You can't sleep for so long anymore, or you'll be considered old, and no one will want to marry you."
This kid!
Landon chuckled and looked at Caitlyn. Seeing her still there made him inexplicably happy. He had held on for so long, afraid she would leave.
Now that she hadn't left, maybe she had softened a bit!
Hazel, who was good at taking care of people, came over and asked, "Mr. Carter, do you need to use the bathroom? Should I call a nurse?"
Landon didn't want that.
He wasn't seventy or eighty years old; why would he need a nurse to help him?
Hazel, being sensible, continued, "Then I'll take Ms. Carter to see the doctor. He said it's best to have a follow-up today."
Landon nodded, patted Katelyn's soft hair, and asked, "Have you had any nightmares these past two days?"
Katelyn shook her head.
Seeing this, Landon was somewhat relieved and handed Katelyn over to Hazel.
After they left, he called Caitlyn, "Help me up; I need to use the bathroom."
Caitlyn had agreed to take care of him, so she was willing. She went over and lifted the blanket, then paused, not expecting to see what was underneath.
Landon was also a bit uncomfortable. He said, "It's just a natural physiological reaction."
She helped him sit up and couldn't help but say, "But you're a patient now! This isn't normal."
Landon stared at her for a while, then softly said, "Just looking at your face makes me react, I can't control it."
Caitlyn thought he was a real pervert. Hazel and Katelyn had just been there, and he could still get an erection. He must have been really pent-up these past few years!
That day when they had sex, Landon said he hadn't had any sexual activity for years.
Caitlyn believed him.
Someone like him had no need to lie, and he never bothered to lie. When they were together, he didn't hide his affairs with other women from Caitlyn. Some girls even came to provoke her, and since she wasn't his wife, she could only get angry every time.
Thinking of those times, Caitlyn felt a chill in her heart and despised herself for softening.
Landon, not fully recovered, broke into a cold sweat after a few steps.
Caitlyn softly said, "Maybe you should use that thing..."
Landon imagined the scene in his mind, and just thinking about it felt obscene. He didn't want to, but he knew Caitlyn was unwilling, and he couldn't bear to force her.
He glanced at her and asked, "Do you have such a big need now?"
Hearing this, Caitlyn thought, 'Let him suffer!'Landon was really weak. Even in those loose hospital clothes, he couldn't manage to undo his belt. Caitlyn didn't hesitate and deftly helped him out.
Landon glanced down and noticed her slender neck. The sight, combined with the help she was providing below, evoked in him not the usual romantic thoughts, but a deep sense of gratitude.
"Caitlyn," he softly called her name without saying anything else.
At that moment, he realized he wanted to grow old with her. Despite being much older than her, he knew he would age first, allowing her to always remain his little girl.
After he finished, Caitlyn helped him pull up his pants.
When she looked up, she met his gentle eyes.
With Caitlyn's care, Landon didn't want to leave the hospital, but staying there was inconvenient for many things.
A week later, he was discharged.
With Amara overseeing the company, Landon was at ease. For major issues, Amara would come to consult him.
Occasionally, Lola would come by to discuss cases.
But since his discharge, Caitlyn was nowhere to be seen; she hadn't come by, nor had she called.
In the main bedroom on the second floor of the villa, Landon wore a white shirt that was not tucked into his trousers—very casual and loose.
He stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, holding his phone.
Just as he was hesitating whether to call Caitlyn, the door opened, and Katelyn, wearing a pretty puffy dress, ran over. She looked up and said, "Dad, Hazel said she wants to take me for ice cream."
"Ice cream?" Landon frowned slightly.
Hazel, smiling at the door, said, "There's a place on Riverbend Road with particularly good ice cream. I noticed Ms. Carter hasn't had much of an appetite, so I thought I'd take her for some."
Landon agreed, but as Hazel was about to take Katelyn, he called out, "Did you say Riverbend Road?"
That place was just a street away from Caitlyn's studio.
Hazel nodded and replied, "Yes!"
Landon said, "Give me the address and I'll take Katelyn."
Hazel disagreed, "Mr. Carter, you're not fully recovered. The doctor said you should rest at home for at least half a month before going out."
However, Landon insisted it was fine.
Katelyn wrinkled her little nose and said, "Dad must be missing Ms. Robinson. He's been waiting every day, but she hasn't called."
Hearing this, Hazel finally understood, but she was still worried, so they all went out together.
After eating ice cream, Hazel noticed Landon didn't look well and suggested they go back.
Yet Landon calmly said, "Since we're out, let's take Katelyn for a walk."
Katelyn thought Landon was being hypocritical.
He clearly wanted to see Caitlyn but claimed he wanted to take Katelyn for a walk.
However, Katelyn missed Caitlyn too. Caitlyn had been so heartless, not asking how Katelyn was for days! Thinking of this, Katelyn decided that when they met, she would make Caitlyn feel sorry for her.
The car stopped in front of Caitlyn's studio, and the three of them waited inside.
Caitlyn finished work early today. As she came downstairs, a young man caught up with her. He was also a teacher and the youngest professor at a university in Seattle. His wife had died in a car accident a few years ago.
Having found out that Caitlyn was single, he decided to pursue her.
But before he could speak, a tall figure blocked the light outside, and Landon said, "Sorry, I'm here to pick up my wife."
The young man was stunned, and Caitlyn was equally taken aback. She looked up to see Landon's deep, unfathomable eyes. She was quite angry; what right did he have to call her his wife? After sending the man away, Caitlyn ignored Landon and tried to leave.
Landon quickly grabbed her wrist and whispered, "So eager to deny it, are you looking to date again?"
Caitlyn bit her lip and replied, "Landon, didn't I say that if this doesn't work, I'll just find another... until I..."
She didn't get to finish her sentence because her mouth was covered.
In the narrow hallway, Landon lightly pressed her body, making it impossible for her to move. If she resisted, he would grab her arms and lift them, kissing her until she went limp.
Landon said, "Behave now? If you dare say that again, I'll do you right here."
Caitlyn angrily kicked him and retorted, "Landon, you're such an old pervert."
He leaned closer, his forehead touching hers, and softly said, "Only a pervert for you! Caitlyn... it's been days, I kind of miss you."
Caitlyn wanted to push him away and say something sarcastic, but she suddenly smelled blood.
Looking down, she noticed blood on Landon's white shirt, clearly from a reopened wound.
She was furious and asked, "Are you crazy? Why are you out here if you're not fully recovered? Are you planning to die and leave Katelyn for me to raise?"
Landon didn't respond, he just looked at her tenderly.
Caitlyn wanted to curse, but held back her emotions. "This is the last time!" she said.
She then helped him into her car.
Because Landon's driver had already driven away, Caitlyn asked him where to go, and Landon softly said, "Let's go to our old villa."
Caitlyn didn't want to go there, but she didn't want to go to his house either.
The car drove smoothly, and no one spoke.
At the villa, she took out the first aid kit to treat his wound. She suddenly remembered the last time she treated him, which ended up in bed.
With his greater experience, Landon could easily guess what she was thinking.
She changed the bandage on his waist and abdomen, reapplying the dressing.
While changing the bandage, perhaps due to the physical contact, Landon's firm abdominal muscles trembled slightly.
Caitlyn didn't dare look, trying to ignore the rising feelings, talking about other things. "Don't do such impulsive things again."
"And, I'm sorry about Leonard. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have been injured... and Katelyn wouldn't have been kidnapped by Leonard." Caitlyn spoke seriously, something she hadn't said in the hospital. She thought it was time to clear things up.
Landon knew she was trying to draw a line between them, to never see each other again, but how could that be!
He leaned back on the sofa and took a cigarette from his pocket.
He lit it and took a puff.
Thin smoke quickly filled the space between them. Landon seemed to ponder for a long time, then said lightly, "Katelyn is a sensitive child. After this incident, she has some psychological shadows. You should come and be her teacher, as we discussed before, twice a week."
He spoke in a business-like manner.
Caitlyn couldn't refuse. Honestly, Leonard's kidnapping was her fault.
Seeing her hesitation, Landon didn't rush her.
He slowly finished his cigarette, then said, "As for us, I won't force you. If you don't want me to have sex with you, I won't. You can rest assured about that."
Caitlyn had heard from Hazel that Katelyn occasionally still had nightmares, and she did feel guilty.
After thinking it over, Caitlyn agreed, "I want to teach her my way, Mr. Carter; you can't interfere or feel sorry for her."
Landon extinguished his cigarette and chuckled lightly. "Calling me Mr. Carter—doesn't it feel awkward? Caitlyn, are we really that distant?"
