Chapter 743 Lola, Let's Be a Real Couple
Lola hung up the phone.
The driver, sensing the urgency, pressed harder on the gas. The black limousine weaved through the busy streets.
Lola sat quietly.
She had given birth just six days ago. Even though it was the sweltering beginning of September, she still wore a light jacket.
Her face was bare, looking more tired than usual.
She gazed out of the car window as the scenery outside changed rapidly. Suddenly, a splash of red caught her eye—it was a maple tree.
Lola reached out her hand. The maple trees had turned red again!
Year after year, the leaves turned red; year after year, she and Johnny grew more distant.
Lola arrived at Johnny's company.
Felicity came down to greet her personally. The entire lobby was on high alert. Everyone had heard that Johnny had been trying to save his marriage for the past year. Rumor had it that while the marriage wasn't saved, they did end up having another child.
Felicity initially intended to be polite, but Lola lowered her eyes.
She said softly, "I need to see Johnny right away."
Felicity quickly responded, "Mr. Flores is waiting for you in his office, Ms. Hawkins. This way, please."
Lola wrapped her coat around herself as she got out of the car, walking briskly without glancing at the blue sky above. In the lobby, her footsteps were clear, and everyone could see her tension, watching silently without daring to greet her.
Felicity led her to the elevator.
The elevator went straight to the top floor.
When she opened Johnny's office door, Lola saw Johnny standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, his back to her. He seemed blurry to her.
"Johnny, what will it take for you to..."
Johnny, standing by the window, stiffened. He slowly turned to look at her.
They had seen each other just an hour ago, but now he felt even more distant. He gave her a faint smile and said, "I want to talk to you alone. Hand your phone to Felicity."
"Johnny!"
"You can leave now if you want, but I think I'm the only one who can save your dad right now."
Lola took out her phone, and Felicity quickly took it.
Knowing she wasn't needed there, Felicity hurried out and closed the door. In the large office, Lola's breathing was a bit rapid, and her face looked pale.
Frederick was on the brink of death. Despite all her resentment, she was willing to set aside her pride to beg Johnny, because she couldn't bear the pain of losing Frederick, nor could she watch Charlotte suffer.
Lola knew what he wanted. She spoke softly, "I'll agree to anything you want."
Johnny looked at her. "Really? Including getting back together? Being a loving couple... just like before, Lola, can you really do that?"
Lola couldn't.
But she told him she could.
Johnny slowly walked over. They stood on opposite sides of the black mahogany desk. On the desk lay a pair of gold-rimmed glasses that Lola had never seen him wear before.
He picked them up with his long, elegant fingers and put them on.
"Lola, I don't want that much."
"I just want to take care of you during your postpartum recovery, for 60 days. During these 60 days, we'll try to be a real couple. If after 60 days you still can't accept me, then..."
Johnny paused. "Then, I'll let you go."
Lola's pink lips turned pale.
She understood his meaning all too well, but she had no time to think. She softly agreed.
But Johnny said a verbal promise wasn't enough.
He sat behind the desk, gently opened a drawer, and took out a freshly printed document. He looked up at her and said, "I should trust you, but having a document makes it more official. Lola, you know time is precious, and death waits for no one."
Her eyes reddened, staring at him.
Just like when they were kids when he occasionally made her angry, Johnny would quickly drop his pride and coax her. But now, Johnny was heartless.
She thought, how ironic!
Johnny had learned these skills from the Hawkins family, and now he was using them against the Hawkins family.
Lola didn't hesitate. She took the document and signed it without reading it carefully. Her fingers trembled as she signed, and Johnny leaned over to hold her hand. At the touch, Lola instinctively wanted to pull away, but he held on tightly. His voice sounded in her ear, "Don't forget, we're supposed to be a real couple."
Lola's fingers curled slightly.
For a moment, she ignored him and signed her name. She heard Johnny say softly, "Lola, we're finally together again."
She suppressed her disgust and asked, "Can you go to the hospital with me now?"
Johnny suddenly lifted her onto the desk, gently pressing her down. The desk was cold, so he used his hand to cushion her. His handsome face moved closer, his voice even softer, "Lola, do you think I'm that heartless?"
"Yes," Lola said firmly.
She had guessed, but she didn't soften because Johnny had threatened her.
A soft laugh sounded.
His handsome face buried in her neck, laughing lowly, but without joy, only self-mockery. After a while, he said hoarsely, "The blood plasma was sent a long time ago. Lola, I trust you'll honor the contract. You're a lawyer, aren't you?"
"Only temporarily," Lola said coldly.
His face moved closer, touching hers. Perhaps because he had Lola back, he was trembling slightly. He couldn't help but gently caress her body, cherishing every inch of her skin.
Lola endured for a while, then said calmly, "Don't forget, I just had a baby not long ago."
Johnny's body felt heavy.
He stopped touching her, just holding her. After a long time, he whispered in her ear, "Let's go to the hospital and see Dad. I think he's already received the blood plasma."
After speaking, he turned her face towards him and lightly kissed her soft lips. "Lola, I'll be good to you."
Johnny led Lola out. Outside, Felicity watched them carefully, trembling inside. Johnny was really dancing on the edge of a knife. He was determined to be entangled with the Hawkins family for a lifetime.
Felicity handed Lola her phone. "Ms. Hawkins, your phone."
Lola said nothing and just walked quickly to the elevator. But she had just given birth, and after a few steps, her face turned pale.
Johnny wrapped his arm around her waist, speaking softly, "Dad's fine. He's awake."
Lola responded politely, "Thank you, Mr. Flores, for your help."
Johnny gave a bitter smile.
In the car, Lola's phone rang. It was Kingsley calling. Lola asked softly about Frederick's condition. When Kingsley asked about her, Lola said calmly, "I'm on my way to the hospital."
She had no other thoughts, only concern for Frederick.
