Chapter 39 Something Happened!
Things didn't go as planned; Secretary Smith's flight had a malfunction and was delayed.
She called Frederick from the waiting lounge, but Frederick had his phone off during the trial.
It wasn't until noon, when the trial ended, that Frederick turned on his phone and received Secretary Smith's message. He frowned in thought.
Mr. Jones's assistant approached him respectfully and said, "Attorney Hawkins, Mr. Jones would like to invite you to lunch."
Frederick put away his phone and smiled faintly. "Please thank Mr. Jones for me! I can't make it to lunch; I have important matters to handle back in Syeattel."
As he was speaking, Mr. Jones came over.
A well-mannered entrepreneur in his early forties, he shook hands warmly with Frederick and said, "Frederick, you were impressive in court. Since you have important matters, I won't keep you. Next time you're in Bostan, you must let me host you properly."
"Absolutely," Frederick replied gracefully.
Mr. Jones valued him highly and arranged for his driver to take Frederick to the airport. Secretary Smith, having been delayed for half a day, decided to take the same flight back with Frederick.
Before the plane took off, Frederick dialed Charlotte's phone again.
It was still off!
He frowned, suspecting something must have happened!
In Syeattel.
Charlotte had been home all day.
Maria was emotionally unstable, and she had been keeping her company for a long time.
In the evening, she made dinner and brought it to Maria. While eating, Charlotte said softly, "I'm meeting a friend later, someone Lily introduced. They should be able to help."
Maria was skeptical.
Charlotte held her hand. "It's true! Maria, I want to give it a try."
Maybe Charlotte's act was too convincing, and Maria believed her.
After dinner, Charlotte went to her room and brought out a large box, taking out a photo album. She gently opened it, revealing a picture of her mother when she was young.
Charlotte gently caressed it.
Her mother had passed away when she was ten, and a year later, William married Maria. Charlotte remembered that William and Maria often argued back then. Once, Maria cried heavily, questioning why he treated someone else's child so well and wouldn't even have his own.
That time, Charlotte realized she wasn't their biological child. She was scared, afraid of being abandoned suddenly. She would act cute and say she wanted a little brother or sister when William and Maria weren't arguing.
But Maria never got pregnant!
She loved William deeply and raised Charlotte. Later, she treated Charlotte quite well. Such a woman, Charlotte couldn't bear to let her go to prison for ten years or more.
A tear fell on the photo, and Charlotte quickly wiped it away.
Maria saw it at the door. Her eyes darkened, but she tried to keep her voice gentle. "Didn't you have an appointment? Freshen up a bit before you go."
Charlotte closed the album and put it away.
She got up, changed her clothes, and couldn't help but hug Maria before leaving.
Maria felt uneasy.
But Charlotte's smile was faint when she looked up. She said that the person Lily found was very capable and that Ethan would likely give face, so Maria let her go.
Charlotte gently closed the door and leaned against it, lost in thought for a long time.
She had just abandoned herself!
By now, it was already evening. The sunset was red, magnificent yet desolate.
Charlotte watched quietly for a long time, then turned and got on the bus.
By the time she arrived at Ethan's villa, it was already 8 PM. Ethan, dressed in a three-piece suit, was sitting on the sofa drinking. The crystal chandelier above refracted luxurious light, making his handsome face even more striking!
If it were before, Charlotte would have been tempted. Now, she only felt disgust.
Ethan's voice was hoarse. "Where have you been? I've been calling you all day!"
