Chapter 172 She Lost Too Much Tonight
Frederick's eyes were intense. He said, "Charlotte, let's talk at home."
She asked again, "Do you love me?"
He frowned, staying silent.
Charlotte had expected this. He didn't love her and didn't want to lie.
The diamond ring slipped from her hand, hitting the ground softly. Their fragile relationship was breaking quietly, unlike Katherine's dramatic end. The pain was hers alone.
Charlotte looked at Frederick and said, "Frederick, I don't want it anymore! Don't worry. I won't hold you back anymore! You don't need to use marriage to bind me! I told you before, you're free! Now, you're free!"
She turned and walked out, keeping her back straight, holding onto her last bit of pride.
She left with dignity.
Who hadn't loved a jerk or been deceived in love? It was just a gamble, and she lost!
It was okay. She could get back up after falling! But Charlotte's husband would never be Frederick!
"Charlotte!" Frederick chased after her and grabbed her hand.
Charlotte tried to shake him off.
He held on tightly. "Listen to me, I'm not playing with you!"
Charlotte couldn't shake him off.
She spoke calmly, "You're right. You're not playing with me! You're just settling. You can't forget your first love and you can't bear to see her hurt. But you always ignore my feelings and pain! Frederick, we're done!"
Frederick gritted his teeth and pulled her into his arms. "We'll talk at home!"
Just then, the nurse in the hospital room screamed, "Miss Mitchell!"
Charlotte turned around, her eyes red.
Katherine's face was pale, her wrist bleeding, but she was smiling. "Frederick, you can't leave me! If you go back with her, I'll die!"
Frederick quickly pressed on her wound.
He suppressed his anger. "Katherine, how long are you going to keep this up?"
Katherine's lips trembled. "You know it!"
Charlotte just stood there, exhausted.
Breaking up meant she didn't have to go to Torontow against her will. Breaking up meant she didn't have to wait for him during long nights. Breaking up was actually pretty good!
Charlotte turned and left; she didn't want to watch anymore.
She went back to Frederick's apartment.
She took down the Valentine's Day decorations bit by bit. The $50,000 decorations, the Michelin table setting, and the pure silver candlesticks, all were dealt with.
The invitation from the Torontow Music Academy was thrown into the trash.
After finishing, Charlotte packed her things and prepared to leave. Just then, her phone rang.
It was Maria, crying. "Charlotte, come to the hospital quickly. Your dad had a fall. He might not make it, Charlotte. He wants to see you one last time! Charlotte, come quickly!"
Maria was sobbing uncontrollably, almost collapsing!
William had only a sliver of consciousness left, but he still held her hand, constantly calling Charlotte's name, wanting to see her.
At the end of his life, William's biggest concern was his precious daughter.
Charlotte's world collapsed!
She dropped everything and ran downstairs.
It was still raining.
Charlotte stepped hard on the gas.
While driving, her vision was blurred. She couldn't tell if it was the rain or her tears.
Faster.
She had to drive faster!
She had to see her dad one last time, tell him she loved him, and assure him she'd take care of Maria. She wanted to tell him he was the best father!
Charlotte was in tears.
The car suddenly made a loud noise. She was stunned for a moment.
Ignoring the heavy rain, she ran out, opened the hood, and black smoke billowed out. The car was broken.
She didn't have time to think. She started hailing a cab, but it was Valentine's Day, and the streets were full of young couples. No luck.
Charlotte ran in the rain. There was a mall ahead where it might be easier to get a cab.
The rain soaked her clothes. Mud splashed on her shoes and pants.
She stepped into a small pit and fell. When she got up, her heel hurt so much she couldn't walk.
Desperately, she tried to stop cars, but no one would help. One car after another passed by, splashing water on her.
Charlotte swallowed her pride and called Frederick. Katherine's hospital was nearby; maybe he could help. She just wanted to see her dad one last time.
"Sorry! The number you dialed is turned off! Sorry! The number you dialed is turned off! Please try again later."
In the rainy night, Charlotte closed her eyes.
This was the hardest night.
A black sports car suddenly stopped beside her, and a tall figure jumped out. It was Oliver!
Oliver ran over and picked up Charlotte. "What are you doing here?"
In the night, Charlotte's face and lips were pale.
She trembled. "Oliver, could you take me to Hamilton Hospital?"
Oliver didn't ask questions. He put Charlotte in the passenger seat and quickly started the car.
The high-performance sports car sped through the rainy night like a shooting star!
Charlotte still didn't make it in time; William passed away with regret.
With Oliver's support, Charlotte walked step by step to the bed. The white sheet already covered William's face; he had left this world forever.
"Charlotte, say goodbye to your dad! He can hear you. He hasn't gone far!" Maria was in tears.
"Dad!" Charlotte's voice trembled as she knelt in front of William.
How could he just leave like this? She had so much to say. She wanted to take them around the world. She hadn't achieved her career, and she hadn't had the chance to be filial to him.
Charlotte gently lifted the white cloth. She saw him one last time.
This man, who had no blood relation to her, had given so much for her.
To give her all his love, he chose not to have his own children. He gave everything for her.
Charlotte gently hugged him, closed her eyes tightly, and softly called, "Dad."
'Dad, I will live well. I will take good care of Maria. I will often take her to see you and mom, and when I have time, I will take Maria out for a walk. Dad, rest in peace.' she promised silently.
Charlotte's foot was sprained.
In the morning, Oliver took her to see an orthopedic doctor.
After an examination, the doctor's expression changed slightly.
He recognized Charlotte because a colleague's child was learning piano from her, and he knew she was talented.
The doctor hesitated before speaking slowly, "Miss Russell's foot is not a big problem. She can walk normally after some recovery. It will hardly affect her daily life, but because of nerve damage in her foot," the doctor paused before continuing, "Miss Russell may never become a top pianist again. Also, Miss Russell should not drive anymore. She can never drive again!"
Charlotte listened quietly. Maybe she had lost too much this night; she felt a bit numb.
