Chapter 269 He Made All the Plans for His Wife and Daughter
Three days later, Andrew rolled in from Copenhegan. The car pulled up, and the driver swung the door open for him.
Andrew was seriously bummed out. He used to be iffy about Frederick, but over the years, he saw that Frederick really did love Charlotte. Now, Frederick was busting his butt to take care of his wife and kid while he still had his wits about him.
Andrew felt bad for them.
Walking into the hall, he spotted Frederick chilling on the sofa, flipping through an old newspaper.
Andrew strolled over and asked, "Is Charlotte around?"
Frederick looked up, a bit caught off guard, then got to his feet. "She went to Vertex Innovations Group to handle some stuff!"
Andrew knew Frederick had handed over Vertex Innovations Group to Charlotte.
He was at a loss for words.
Finally, he muttered, "That's cool. I need to talk to you alone."
Frederick figured it was something big, so he gave a faint smile. "Let's chat in the study upstairs."
In the study, Andrew was puffing away on a cigarette, glancing up now and then. "How's your health holding up?"
Frederick was making coffee.
Hearing that, he paused and replied softly, "Not great."
He handed a cup of coffee to Andrew and sat down across from him.
Andrew was pretty worked up and stubbed out his cigarette.
He looked at Frederick and started carefully, "I got some news. Katherine might've gotten that drug through her ex-husband. Surveillance caught him visiting her in the hospital. They hauled him in for questioning, but he was slick, and they had no solid proof. Because of his special status, they had to let him go."
Frederick sipped his coffee slowly.
Andrew went on, "I heard after that divorce case, he couldn't stay in Novaria and is now a producer back home. He's got the motive! But don't sweat it, I'll keep tabs on him."
Frederick nodded.
They sat there, sipping coffee.
After a while, Frederick placed a medical record on the table.
Andrew picked it up, and the more he read, the more shocked he got.
He looked at Frederick in disbelief. Frederick gave a faint, helpless smile. "Andrew, I'm forgetting Charlotte more and more each day, and sometimes I even forget Lola."
Andrew lit another cigarette.
Suddenly, Frederick stood up and gently knelt in front of Andrew.
The cigarette almost burned Andrew's hand. He quickly moved to help Frederick up. "Frederick, what the heck are you doing? You're making this super awkward!"
Frederick refused to get up.
His voice was low and raspy. "My dad's getting old, and he won't be around forever. Charlotte's capable but still a gentle woman with two kids. Andrew, I'm begging you to look after them in the future, not just Charlotte but also Chloe. Help them with the big decisions at home."
Andrew didn't like hearing this.
He frowned. "Frederick, don't think you can dump your whole family on me! If you forget everything, what happens to Charlotte? What about the kids?"
Frederick's gaze was intense.
He smiled lightly and bitterly. "Andrew, I always tell Charlotte not to give up on me, to remember to find me. But who can predict the future? I just want her to live with hope. Without hope, life would be so bleak."
Besides, Charlotte had dealt with postpartum depression.
Now, she was pregnant again.
Frederick could only, while he still remembered, do everything he could to ensure his wife and kids were okay.
Hearing this, Andrew felt even more heartbroken.
He silently finished his cigarette and gave Frederick a pat on the shoulder. "Frederick, I promise you, man."
His voice was a bit choked up. "Don't stay away too long; remember to come back soon! Charlotte and the kids are waiting for you; we're all waiting for you!"
Frederick gave a faint smile.
Andrew hung around for a bit longer, then headed out, only to bump into Chloe on the stairs.
Chloe was carrying a tray of food. It looked pretty decent.
Andrew paused, eyes locked on her, then pulled out a cigarette from his pocket. "You learned to cook?"
Chloe nodded. "Yeah, but it doesn't taste that great."
Andrew gave a faint smile.
There was a hint of tears in his eyes, which Chloe noticed, making her feel bad too. She temporarily forgot about their issues and sincerely said, "Thanks for coming to see Frederick."
Andrew's smile faded even more.
He looked at the girl he once loved dearly, filled with emotion.
He thought he was suffering enough, but compared to Frederick, it seemed not so bad.
Andrew had business to attend to and had to leave.
He held the cigarette in his lips and gently patted her head. "I'm outta here. Call me if you need anything."
Chloe responded with a hum.
Andrew looked at her for a while longer, then withdrew his hand and slowly went downstairs.
As he reached the bottom, he suddenly turned around and asked her, "How's it going with that guy?"
Chloe was silent for a moment.
She spoke bitterly, "We didn't get along, so we broke up." After saying that, she went upstairs.
Andrew watched her back disappear.
He should have been happy that her relationship didn't work out, but he couldn't feel happy. Because he knew clearly that if it weren't for his involvement with Gavin, she could easily find a good man to marry.
In the end, it was he who delayed her!
When Charlotte returned, it was already night.
She found Frederick in the study.
He was flipping through a diary. When he saw Charlotte come in, he put the diary back in the drawer as he always did.
Charlotte didn't call him out on it.
She went up to him and gently hugged him. "Did Andrew come by today?"
Frederick responded with a hum.
He wanted to tell Charlotte what Andrew had told him, but when he tried to speak, his mind suddenly went blank.
Seeing his confused expression, Charlotte's heart sank.
She knew his memory was becoming chaotic.
She didn't want him to think too much.
She took his hand and placed it on her belly, speaking softly, "Chloe is staying with Lola tonight. Frederick, let's go for a walk in the yard, okay?"
He had been cooped up at home for many days.
She knew he didn't go out because he was afraid of forgetting how to come back.
Charlotte was conflicted and in pain. She was the one who had tied him down. If it weren't for her, Frederick wouldn't have to struggle so much.
In the courtyard, she held his hand tightly, savoring the last bit of warmth.
Under the moonlight, she looked up at her husband.
He was still handsome and strong,
But sometimes, his eyes were unfamiliar.
Later, Charlotte found a note in his pocket with a few words reminding him of himself.
[Go to the basement until you remember Charlotte!]
Seeing that note, Charlotte cried for a long time.
She thought that she shouldn't keep him by her side anymore! He lost his joy in her arms. Even if he forgot Charlotte, he was still Frederick!
At night, Charlotte fell asleep with tears.
In the early morning, when she woke up, there was a white rose on the pillow, fresh with dew as always. She felt a bit of sweetness in her heart and called softly, "Frederick."
The bedroom was quiet.
Charlotte felt something off. She ran downstairs without even putting on her shoes.
"Frederick."
"Frederick!"
