Chapter 117: He knows! He just Doesn't Want to Give It
Charlotte was stunned by Oliver!
She wasn't into dramatic love games; she just wanted to be with someone she truly cared about. Even if it wasn't Frederick, she believed she'd find that special someone someday.
Charlotte bolted because Oliver scared her off.
In the pavilion, Oliver dropped his playful act and stared blankly at Charlotte's retreating figure.
She'd left half her cocktail, its light pink color looking sweet. Oliver gently picked it up, tracing the lip print she left before sipping from the same spot.
In their circle, there were many girls like Katherine—each beautiful and capricious in their own way.
But Charlotte was different; she had qualities those girls lacked. Plus, she came from a good family and wasn't petty. She was the perfect wife candidate in their circle!
Ethan didn't appreciate her.
Frederick was too occupied with his ex back in town to care for Charlotte!
Oliver thought, 'Frederick, if you don't cherish her, I will!'
Charlotte thought she was prepared when she entered the banquet hall, but seeing Frederick dance with Katherine was a different story. Imagining it was one thing; seeing it was another.
They looked perfect together, moving in sync.
Frederick held Katherine's slim waist as she twirled in his arms.
Everyone around them watched with some regret, remembering how well-matched they were but never ended up together.
Charlotte watched quietly.
She thought, luckily she wasn't too deeply involved. They weren't truly in love or in a serious relationship. Otherwise, how would she handle this moment?
The dance ended.
Frederick and Katherine were slightly out of breath, and applause erupted around them.
Katherine, full of passion and energy, boldly kissed Frederick on the cheek. "Frederick, we still make such a great pair!"
Frederick was stunned by the kiss.
He felt a different gaze and slowly turned around.
It was Charlotte.
She stood in the crowd, watching them, and who knew how long she'd been there.
As cohabitants, he should comfort her and explain something! But Frederick realized he needed to consider Elijah's feelings too. Comforting Charlotte in front of everyone would be like announcing an engagement.
Frederick didn't want to be tied down!
He just stared at her, with a look they both understood.
Charlotte got it! How could she not?
He knew her feelings and understood her desires. She wanted a lasting, secure, exclusive relationship.
But he wasn't willing to give it!
The music started again, and others urged Frederick and Katherine to dance another round. Frederick wanted to refuse, but Katherine laughed softly, "Afraid your girlfriend will get jealous? Or can't you forget me, not even daring to dance with me?"
"You're overthinking it!" Frederick's voice was cold.
He held Katherine's waist again.
Katherine's graceful moves and ambitious, possessive gaze at Frederick were undeniably alluring and exciting for men.
But Frederick's mind was elsewhere.
Charlotte's waist was slimer; especially when he held her from behind, it always excited him.
Thinking about it, Frederick lost interest in dancing. As soon as the dance ended, he wanted to take Charlotte home.
But Charlotte had already left!
She politely said goodbye to Laura, claiming she felt unwell and asked for a car.
Laura was almost helpless. She knew Frederick's actions were wrong. After so many years apart, why dance with someone else and ignore his girlfriend?
Laura couldn't leave and didn't want others to see the mess.
She secretly asked Chloe to send Charlotte off.
Chloe was also angry.
It was her birthday, and Katherine stole the spotlight as soon as she showed up. It was infuriating!
All the way, she kept criticizing Katherine, even revealing that Katherine had betrayed Frederick. Her delicate face was indignant. "Anyway, she can't marry into our Hawkins family! Charlotte, don't worry, my mom dislikes her the most!"
Charlotte looked at Chloe.
She was endearing, and that's why Frederick showered her with affection, hesitant to reveal Ethan's darker side to her. Charlotte couldn't dislike her and even felt fond of her.
Charlotte sighed softly.
Actually, she couldn't marry into the Hawkins family either!
She didn't say this. Instead, she took out a delicate little box from her bag and placed it in Chloe's hand.
"Chloe, happy birthday," Charlotte said sincerely.
Chloe felt a bit sad. She asked worriedly, "You're not going to break up with Frederick, are you?"
Break up?
Charlotte smiled and softly said no.
Because between her and Frederick, there was only the end of the relationship, not a breakup.
Chloe didn't understand. She watched Charlotte get into the car, happily holding the gift and returning home. As soon as she entered, she ran into Frederick.
Frederick asked, "Where's Charlotte?"
Chloe pouted, "You made her leave!"
She raised the box in her hand. "Charlotte gave me this gift!"
She couldn't wait to see it, so she sat on the sofa and opened the box. Frederick had wanted to leave, but for some reason, he also wanted to see what Charlotte had given Chloe.
She hadn't mentioned she was giving a gift.
The box opened, and inside was not expensive jewelry.
It was a cross.
Underneath was a handmade aromatic sachet with lavender in it. Such a precious gift must have taken her a lot of effort.
Chloe's lips trembled lightly.
"This is the best gift I've ever received," she said softly.
Frederick reached out and gently patted Chloe's head, whispering, "You'll be safe and sound always." Then he picked up the car keys and headed to the parking lot.
When Charlotte returned to the apartment, it was almost ten o'clock.
She removed her makeup, took a bath, and wrapped herself in a black silk robe, standing by the floor-to-ceiling window. She rarely drank, but tonight she wanted a little.
When she was slightly tipsy, Charlotte thought it was over.
It was over with Frederick!
But whether this relationship ended or not, she had to hear his opinion. After all, her father's lawsuit hadn't officially started, and she couldn't afford to offend him too much.
Charlotte thought a lot and planned a lot.
Feeling troubled, she opened the Morning Dew and played "Moonlight Lover."
When Frederick opened the door, he saw Charlotte sitting and playing the piano.
No tears, no hysteria, just a hint of sadness in the music, but even this sadness was very restrained.
This was Charlotte, completely opposite in character to Katherine.
The piano music stopped abruptly.
Charlotte turned her head to look at Frederick, smiling slightly. "You're back?"
