Chapter 618 Kingsley, Do I Have a Choice?
The room went dead silent. Amara blinked and asked softly, "Is that really what you think?"
Kingsley shot back, "Have you even thought about our future? Does last night mean nothing to you? Is that why you rushed to get the morning-after pill first thing? And when I stayed over, you were hesitant, weren't you?"
He was fuming, his words coming out harsh.
Amara, feeling tipsy and drained, didn't have the energy to argue. She leaned back in her chair and muttered, "What do you want me to say? That one night together fixed everything?"
Kingsley just stared at her.
He finally said, "You know Landon has feelings for you, yet you still work with him. Am I not allowed to care?"
Amara had only been with Kingsley three years ago, but Landon had been there through her growth. It wasn't Kingsley who had been there as she matured, but Landon.
Amara knew this, yet she still stayed by Landon's side for three years.
After he finished, Amara let out a small laugh.
She raised her hand to smooth her messy hair, but her trembling hand gave her away. After calming down a bit, she said softly, "Yeah, I know! But who are you to judge me? Do you think when I went to Bostan with nothing, pregnant, I had the luxury of choosing my life? On one hand, I could return to Syeattel without dignity and beg you to acknowledge this child, and on the other, Landon was willing to support me and offer me a different life. What do you think I would choose? I begged you, but you already crushed my dignity. Why should I believe a child will change your mind and we can go back to the way things were? Even if we do, you'll just treat me like a pet, and when you don't want me anymore, you can send me away with a check! But what Landon gives me is different! Without him, I can still get a good job, support Jesse and Hailey, and live independently. Things are different for us. You have many options, but I don't have any."
After she finished speaking, she was on the verge of tears. Then she lowered her head and said, "What else can I do if I don't take the morning-after pill? Have another child?"
After saying that, she tried to get out of the car, despite the freezing weather and scarce cabs. However, as soon as she moved, Kingsley locked the car doors.
Amara lightly tapped on the car door.
Kingsley glanced at her, then slowly finished the rest of his cigarette. The thin smoke filled the car, making Amara cough a few times.
He stubbed out the cigarette, his Adam's apple moving slightly, and spoke softly, "Quit your job! If you want a career, I can set up a company for you or make you a project manager at the Hawkins Group. You can do whatever you want."
Amara could tell he wasn't joking. After hearing what Landon had said, he couldn't tolerate her working by Landon's side anymore.
Amara blinked lightly. "What if I don't leave the Carter Group?"
Kingsley turned his head and rolled down the window a bit. The fog outside was so thick that the road was barely visible.
After a while, he said faintly, "I don't want to go against Landon."
Amara understood what he meant.
Her voice was even lower than before. "Kingsley, I don't want to!"
She asked him to let her out of the car.
Kingsley finally exploded. "Amara! Is Landon really that important to you?"
