Chapter 829 Clayton, I've Already Had a Miscarriage 1
Gavin paused for a moment and said, "Just wait."
Then, he hung up the phone.
About five minutes later, Gavin walked out of the villa. He was wearing black casual pants and a turtleneck sweater, with a white cigarette between his slender fingers.
The evening breeze gently ruffled his neatly trimmed hair.
He looked sharp and imposing.
Clayton took a step forward, and the two equally imposing men faced each other. Clayton spoke first, "I want to see Natalie."
Gavin pinched the cigarette and put it out.
He looked at Clayton and retorted, "You want to see her, but did you ask if she wants to see you?"
"Clayton, you really have some nerve. Do you think Natalie slept with Grant and is now trying to pin the child on you? Are you insulting yourself or Natalie? Do you think the Devereux family needs your child support?"
He couldn't contain his anger and spat out a few more harsh words.
"If you can't make her happy, then don't mess with her!"
"You begged her to get back together, and when you couldn't handle your own emotional issues, did Natalie say a single harsh word? In the end, you slandered her!"
"Clayton, let me tell you this: you and Natalie are done. Not only my parents, but I, as her brother, will never agree to her being with you again."
"What would she get from being with you? Being wronged or mistreated?"
Unable to hold back, he threw a punch. "You're such a bastard!"
Clayton didn't fight back.
Gavin hit him a few more times before stopping.
He straightened his clothes. "It's not that I'm no longer angry, I just think it's not worth it!"
"Clayton, don't come back here again. You and Natalie aren't married anymore, so there's no more ties... It's better this way, clean break!"
Gavin turned and walked away.
Clayton leaned against his car, taking a while to stand up straight. He asked, "What about the child?"
Gavin paused.
He thought for a moment and softly replied, "Didn't you say it was Grant's? If it's Grant's child, what does it have to do with you? If you want a child, ask Gina to have one for you. I'm sure she'd be willing."
Clayton's body slumped against the car.
He couldn't get up for a long time... The sound of children playing in the yard grew closer.
Haven, Mercy, and Leopold were playing hide and seek and had come to the door.
Haven saw Clayton.
Not understanding the adult world, she happily wanted to run out and hug Clayton.
But Gavin scooped her up and carried her on his shoulder. He softly said, "He's a stranger. Don't play with him anymore."
Haven felt she hadn't made a mistake.
But sensing Gavin's anger, she didn't dare struggle. She could only lie on Gavin's shoulder, looking eagerly at Clayton, softly calling him "Mr. Percy".
Clayton's heart felt like it was being pierced by needles.
He thought of the times he spent with Natalie and Haven.
They were so happy.
He also thought about growing up with Natalie. She had been right there all along, but because Gina was younger, he believed Gina and doubted Natalie's character.
A woman was pregnant with a man's child.
The man called her shameless and said her child was someone else's illegitimate child. How cruel...
Clayton claimed to love her, but at the crucial moment, he didn't even give her basic trust.
He had forgotten all the vows he made when they got married.
All forgotten!
Clayton leaned against the car, closing his eyes in pain.
Gavin carried Haven back home.
He knew Haven was sad. A child doesn't understand the adult world... But she had to cut ties with Clayton.
In the twilight, Gavin held Haven on his lap.
He wiped her tears gently. "Who's more important, your mom or Mr. Percy?"
Haven blinked at him.
After a while, she sniffled, "Mom is more important."
Gavin patted her little head, rewarding her. "So, Haven, you need to be the bravest daughter for your mom. Don't mention Mr. Percy anymore, okay?"
Haven didn't understand how being brave related to Clayton, but she trusted Gavin...
Haven decided not to think about Clayton anymore, but she was still sad, lying on Gavin's shoulder for comfort for a long time.
Haven's face was soft, her eyes bright, her nose small, and her lips rosy.
Gavin couldn't help but kiss her little face, carrying her into the hall.
Inside, Molly was bustling around, helping the servants set the table, pacing back and forth like a squirrel on caffeine.
Gavin put Haven down and glanced at Molly.
Molly looked upstairs and couldn't help but ask quietly, "How did it go? What did you say? Did you fight with Clayton?"
Gavin patted Haven's bottom, sending her off to play.
Once Haven ran off, he said slowly, "Yeah, we fought a bit! Actually, I hit him one-sidedly. He did something wrong, so he didn't dare fight back!"
Molly didn't say anything.
Though she had a good relationship with Clayton, Natalie was her family. This time, Clayton was in the wrong, and she would support whatever decision Natalie made.
She continued setting the table.
Under the light, she looked gentle and lovely.
Gavin walked over and gently hugged her. "Not going to plead for him?"
Molly softly said, "I'll listen to you on this."
Gavin looked at her tenderly. After a while, he gently touched her waist and went upstairs to call Natalie for dinner.
As he went upstairs, he thought, how lucky he was to have Molly.
Natalie had originally wanted to live alone.
But Molly insisted on bringing her home, saying that Leopold and Mercy were grown and didn't need much attention. She could help take care of the baby when Natalie gave birth.
Gavin knew that Molly was already busy with the kids' studies and genuinely cared for Natalie.
Gavin decided to cut back on social engagements.
He shouldn't leave all of Natalie's matters to Molly; she was also a woman and deserved to enjoy life.
He went upstairs without mentioning Clayton.
Natalie didn't ask either.
The family had a very ordinary dinner, and after dinner, everyone went about their own business.
It was a peaceful life. In the evening, Gavin took Haven away, saying she would sleep with them for a few nights.
Natalie had some quiet time alone.
Late at night, she continued working on her book, "The Three Bears." Near the end, she changed the ending.
The three bears didn't live happily together.
They each went their separate ways.
When she set this ending, Natalie felt a bit dazed. She wanted to change it back... but in the end, she kept the new version.
Around 11 PM, she packed up and got ready for bed.
After washing up, she got into bed.
Natalie picked up a book of essays and read under the lamp.
About ten minutes later, her phone on the bedside table rang. She picked it up and saw it was an unknown number.
At this hour, she knew who it was.
She didn't want any more entanglements with Clayton and directly hung up without answering.
On the other end, Clayton stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of his apartment.
The bright lights couldn't penetrate his heart... He looked at the disconnected call and didn't call back.
It was too late; he didn't want to disturb Natalie. He didn't want her to lose sleep.
Clayton stood by the window for a long time.
When his eyes started to ache, he slowly turned around, looking at the apartment.
He gently touched the hammock he had made for Haven. She loved it, always lying on it comfortably...
But tonight, she was on Gavin's shoulder, helplessly calling "Mr. Percy".
Clayton closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, he punched the white wall hard, drawing blood, but he didn't feel the pain.
There was a knock at the door.
Clayton went to open it, thinking it was the building staff.
But at the door, it was Gina.
Gina was crouched like a puppy at the door, looking up at him pitifully. "Clayton, I've been sitting here for two hours."
In the past, Clayton would have softened.
After all, he had cared for her.
But now, Clayton's eyes only held unfamiliarity and disgust as he looked at her. "How did you get the elevator code?"
Gina wouldn't say.
But Clayton had lost his patience. He directly told her to get lost... filled with disgust and anger.
Gina started crying. "Clayton, don't treat me like this! I didn't mean to ruin your relationship. I just like you too much. I want to be with you. Is that wrong?"
Even now, she didn't think she was wrong.
Clayton couldn't be bothered with her. He grabbed her hand and threw her out of the building in the middle of the night.
He called security to make sure she was gone. "Don't let her up here again."
In the middle of the night, Gina cried on the street.
As Clayton went back upstairs, he heard Gina's cries. He thought, Gina could cry for her mistakes, but what could he do for his?
He couldn't see Natalie.
Natalie wouldn't see him. She wouldn't even give him a chance to say sorry.
Back in the apartment, the lights were bright as he opened the door.
It was blinding.
Clayton suddenly covered his eyes.
The next time he saw Natalie was a week later.
Natalie was going to work when Clayton blocked her at the company entrance.
After nearly ten days, he looked thinner and more haggard, his clothes slightly wrinkled as if he hadn't changed them in days.
Natalie held onto the car door, looking at him.
That look seemed to span a thousand years.
Before he went abroad, they were still close lovers. Now, they were almost like enemies...
Since he left, Natalie rarely thought of him. She had decided to remove him from her life.
After a while, she looked away and closed the car door.
She didn't speak to him, didn't question or blame him. She walked straight to the elevator.
Just as she was about to enter, her hand was grabbed.
She was forced to face Clayton.
They were so close that she could smell the faint scent of his cologne... the brand she had bought for him and was used to, but now it made her nauseous.
"Let go!"
Natalie said softly, "If you don't, I'll report you for harassment."
Clayton ignored her.
He stared into her eyes, desperately saying, "Natalie, let's talk! Give me a chance!"
Afraid she wouldn't agree, he softened his tone. "Please?"
Natalie looked down and smiled faintly.
After a while, she looked up with a cold smile. "A chance? Clayton, that night I tried so hard to explain, to keep you. How did you treat me?"
"You said I accidentally slept with an ex while drunk. You said Gina was pure, unlike me with my experiences..."
"Clayton, the things you once cherished about me became your weapons against me. What chance is there to talk about?"
Clayton wouldn't give up.
His voice was hoarse. "Gina... she wasn't sick. The fertility test was faked by her. Natalie, I'm sorry... I'm so sorry!"
He knew no amount of apologies could make up for it.
He wanted to take care of her, to make up for his mistakes.
Natalie didn't give him any hope. She directly refused, looking into his eyes and softly saying, "There's no need! Clayton, I've already had the abortion."
Clayton's body swayed.
He held onto the wall to keep from collapsing.
After a long time, he asked hoarsely, "You... you had the abortion?"
