Chapter 659 The Wedding Gift for You
Landon held Caitlyn close, Jimmy's words still ringing in his ears. His blue eyes, normally piercing, were half-lidded and inscrutable, shrouding his emotions in ambiguity.
Sure, Jimmy had some money and his business was doing alright, but he was nowhere near Landon's level. That one look from Landon almost knocked him over.
Landon's voice was slow, echoing through the fancy club hallway. "I've never been the forgiving type."
Jimmy didn't want to escalate things and pleaded, "For Ms. Russell's sake, please!"
Landon sneered. "That kid could be Charlotte's adopted son? Even if he is, who cares!"
Jimmy's expression grew more complex. Gathering the courage, he pointed at Caitlyn, nestled in Landon's arms, and dared to voice the question, "You've been with her so many times and caught feelings, why not marry her? Caitlyn's amazing!"
Landon's face darkened. Ignoring Jimmy, he carried Caitlyn downstairs and placed her in the car. As he was fastening her seatbelt, she suddenly grabbed his hand.
Landon thought she had woken up, but she hadn't. It was like she was dreaming, murmuring softly, "Mr. Carter," her eyes slightly open, showing a bit of her dark blue pupils, staring straight at him, watery.
Landon looked at her, unable to move, his heart caught in a tangle of emotions.
After a long time, Caitlyn gently closed her eyes and murmured, "I must be dreaming! How could you come back when you're already married!"
Those words made Landon feel uneasy. His long fingers trembled slightly as he gently caressed her face, gazing at her with deep affection.
He wanted her, but he was already married. It wasn't about being faithful to Phoebe; his current status didn't deserve Caitlyn.
Landon's Adam's apple bobbed, and he lowered his hand and closed the car door. Arriving at the villa, he carefully lifted Caitlyn from the car. Going upstairs, he carried her to a room and placed her gently on the bed. Exhausted, Landon retreated to the living room, collapsing onto the worn couch.
In the morning, birds chirped on the branches outside.
Caitlyn turned over, her fingers touching the pillow, and suddenly opened her eyes to a familiar scene: the villa she had sold, now lying on that bed again.
Even though she had drunk last night, she could still remember after thinking it over. She had a fight with Lowell, and Landon brought her here.
"Awake?" a familiar voice reached her ears, one she hadn't tired of hearing for three years. But now she didn't want to hear it at all.
Caitlyn turned her back to him, her voice cold. "Did you buy this place? Was the money Kingsley gave me arranged by you too?"
Landon stayed silent.
After a moment, she asked softly, "Why did you bring me here?"
Landon held a glass of water and a hangover pill. He said, "Take the pill, you'll feel better."
Caitlyn suddenly turned around and knocked over the glass of water with a wave of her hand, soaking the dark bedspread instantly, but she didn't care. She yelled at him, "Why did you bring me here? Do you remember what this place is, Mr. Carter? How many times have we slept on this bed? Do you want to count? What is this? Guilt and pity after you got married? If you don't want me anymore, why bother me? Whether I'm doing well or not has nothing to do with you!"
After saying that, she glared at him, but her lips were trembling. No matter how much time passed or how often she told herself to forget him, she couldn't help but truly hate him when she remembered his wedding day.
Landon just watched her quietly. He was patient, then got another glass of water, insisting she take the pill.
After a few tries, Caitlyn swallowed the pill dry, and threw off the blanket to leave, but he caught her slender wrist.
Landon's voice was low. "I haven't given you the check yet. Have breakfast with me."
Caitlyn suddenly remembered what happened yesterday, but she didn't want his money. She looked down at their clasped hands. "Let go."
Landon didn't let go, his tone indifferent. "Just one breakfast, and you'll get the hundred million dollars."
Caitlyn's lips trembled slightly. She looked up at him, then suddenly slapped him across the face and started unbuttoning her shirt, saying as she did, "Let's have sex instead! I think having breakfast with you is more disgusting."
Her shirt opened, revealing a black lace bra, showcasing her youthful and sexy body. She lay on the bed and closed her eyes lightly. "Landon, isn't this what you want? Come on, why are you pretending to be innocent!" Despite saying that, she couldn't help but shed tears.
He just gently embraced her. Her shirt buttons were fastened by Landon with one hand. He held her waist to keep her from moving. After she was dressed, he hugged her, his expression and voice full of pain. "Caitlyn, stop it."
Caitlyn just lay there quietly, tears streaming down her face. She had nothing left and felt out of place in his arms. "Let me go! Don't disgrace me and your wife."
After saying that, she turned her face to the side, extremely embarrassed.
They liked each other. For three long years, she had waited for him, nurturing a hope that ultimately crumbled when he married someone else. She hated him, and he was unwilling.
She said softly, "Landon, if I lost to Amara, I would accept it! But why to an unrelated stranger? Are you deliberately making me suffer for a lifetime?"
"No!" Landon said in a low voice, "No! I want you to be happy, Caitlyn..."
That sentence "I like you," he couldn't say it. Maybe, he would never be able to say it.
Caitlyn started crying again!
Landon held her, he comforted her for a long time before she was willing to get up. When he faced her again, she didn't intend to scold or hit him anymore.
He made breakfast, and she was willing to eat with him.
The dining room was quiet, just like the past three years, but different because Hazel was no longer there. When Landon asked about her, she said, "Hazel is working as a maid for Amara. Hazel said she's quite happy there and gets along well with everyone."
Landon made her a plate of basil pesto pasta, her favorite. He said, "I just made the basil pesto; it's delicious. Try it."
Caitlyn looked at the food, lost in thought. They had good times too. In the beginning, he pampered her, he would make it for her. He had always treated her well, except for having many lovers.
Caitlyn lowered her head and ate silently.
Landon said softly, "Some things can't be undone; it is what it is."
She understood what he meant. He was married, that was a fact, and it couldn't be changed.
She gave a faint smile. "Mr. Carter, don't worry. I won't ruin your family. From now on, whenever I see you, I'll avoid you. You better not come near me either, or I won't be responsible for what happens."
Landon frowned and took out a cigarette, but didn't light it.
"Why be so distant? Caitlyn, I can take care of you," he said.
She continued eating her pasta. "No need! I can take care of myself!"
Landon didn't push it. He played with the cigarette, and when she finished eating, he placed a set of villa keys and a check for a hundred million dollars in front of her. He gently patted her head and said, "Consider these my wedding gifts to you! You're still young; find a good man to marry and forget about me."
Caitlyn was stunned. She looked at the check and the keys, her slender fingers lightly touching them.
After a while, she said, "I will forget you! As for these, take them back! You're not that important to me; I don't need your wedding gifts."
She deliberately spoke indifferently, but her eyes were filled with tears. She felt like crying again and hated herself for being so weak. After her words hung in the air like a bitter echo, she grabbed her small bag and left hurriedly, not giving Landon a chance to see her off.
He was married, and she was drunk last night, but in broad daylight, it would be her fault if things got complicated again.
Five minutes later, a taxi arrived, and she left.
Landon didn't stop her but stood there for a long time. After a long while, he turned and made his way back into the villa. When he entered the living room, his gaze fell on the check and the keys lying on the table and then he tore the check in half. Just then Phoebe called.
At this point, he and Phoebe were already separated, and she was pregnant. Their relationship was terrible. But Phoebe still wanted to reconcile.
She had temporarily broken up with her lover and was focusing all her attention on Landon, hoping he would change his mind. But how could that be possible? She was carrying someone else's baby, and Landon tolerating her was already for the sake of the bigger picture.
"Landon! Didn't your secretary say you were coming back yesterday? Why are you in Seattle again? Can you come back tonight? I made your favorite food and even asked Aunt Briana for the recipe. You'll definitely like it." Phoebe's voice was very gentle.
Landon rubbed his temples.
Their marriage had reached this point, and he was actually tired of dealing with her, so he said directly, "No need! Just take care of yourself."
Phoebe's tone was gentle but with a hint of grievance. "But Landon, how can you keep staying in hotels? You need someone to take care of you, don't you?"
Landon sneered. "Why do you think I'm staying in hotels? I have a secretary who can arrange things for me. If you think that's not enough, you can even send a cute young girl. At least if I cheat, it will be with someone from your side!"
Phoebe was silent. After a long time, she said weakly, "Landon, can you forgive me?"
Landon grew more impatient. "Between us, there's no question of forgiveness! If there's nothing important, I'm hanging up."
Phoebe quickly said, "You went to see her again, didn't you?"
Landon warned Phoebe. "You're crossing the line!"
He hung up the phone, feeling frustrated because Caitlyn refused his care. He thought, 'Caitlyn must be determined to leave him!'
Caitlyn cried so hard in the taxi that it scared the driver into silence. It wasn't until she got out that she, with red eyes, paid the fare.
Caitlyn took over the Robinson Family's business, mainly in the hotel industry. There was an important event tonight that she had to oversee personally, so no matter how much her head hurt, she endured it and went to work.
After leaving Landon, she had to handle everything on her own and rarely slept in anymore.
As soon as she entered the lobby, the employees greeted her politely, but their gazes were complicated. Caitlyn understood why when she saw Phoebe on the sofa.
Phoebe smiled slightly. "You must be Caitlyn! I've seen you before! At my wedding with Landon, remember?"
Phoebe not only looked gentle but her voice was also soft.
Caitlyn had drunk last night, and although the hangover pill helped, her face was still pale.
Caitlyn stared at Phoebe's slightly swollen belly. Phoebe was clearly pregnant, and she was deliberately holding her belly, obviously showing off her marital bliss.
Caitlyn's lips trembled slightly, and she forced a smile. "Yes, I remember! What can I do for you, Mrs. Carter?"
Phoebe looked around. "Can we find a quiet place? There are too many people here, and I'm afraid it might affect your reputation."
Caitlyn could see that Phoebe was not here with good intentions.
She flipped her hair and sat down, saying, "What reputation do I have left? All of Seattle knows I'm the woman Landon got tired of. But they only guessed half right. Maybe because Mrs. Carter is pregnant, Mr. Carter is unsatisfied, so we had sex again last night! Mr. Carter is very generous, offering a hundred million dollars, but I didn't take it! Mrs. Carter, you know best how good Mr. Carter's stamina is, don't you?"
Caitlyn was lying.
Sure enough, Phoebe was infuriated. She had always been troubled by Landon's inability to have sex with her, and now hearing Caitlyn praise his sexual prowess was unbearable.
Phoebe sneered. "Aren't you afraid that provoking me might cause a miscarriage, and Landon would blame you?"
Caitlyn looked at her with innocent eyes. "Is there any good woman among mistresses? You are overestimating me. Does Mr. Carter know how naive you are?"
Phoebe was so angry she collapsed onto the sofa.
Caitlyn snorted and stood up, "Mrs. Carter, if you're so worried, why not just tie Mr. Carter to yourself? That way, you'll feel secure. He's not that attractive to others. He is getting old. You should keep him for yourself!"
Phoebe was furious. Finally, she couldn't hold back and slapped Caitlyn, making her face slightly red.
With Caitlyn's temper, she would definitely fight back. But Caitlyn stared at Phoebe's belly.
There was Landon's child inside, and at his age, having a child wasn't easy. If she accidentally caused a miscarriage...
Caitlyn held back and said, "Mrs. Carter, have you calmed down?"
Phoebe's body trembled. "You're shameless!"
Caitlyn lowered her eyes and smiled lightly. "Yes, you're right. Otherwise, how could I have been entangled with Landon for three years and even shown up at your wedding?"
After saying that, Caitlyn turned to leave.
Phoebe grabbed Caitlyn, but accidentally lost her balance and fell. "It hurts!"
A few streaks of blood slowly flowed from between Phoebe's legs.
