Chapter 689 Mr. Carter is Experienced in Relationships
After Caitlyn finished talking, Katelyn looked at her with those big, teary eyes, looking all kinds of pitiful.
But Caitlyn wasn't having any of it. She reached out, tugged Katelyn's ear, and said, "I'm calling Landon right now."
Katelyn replied, "He's on a business trip."
"He went on a business trip and left you here with me? I'm not your full-time nanny," Caitlyn shot back.
"Ms. Reynolds brought me here. She said you'd take care of me, but she lied." Tears started streaming down Katelyn's face as she finished speaking.
Caitlyn glared at Katelyn, who was now crying and running around. She was so mad she thought about calling Landon, but since Hazel was involved, she couldn't do that. In the end, she had to call Hazel, who picked up the phone.
But Hazel was still riding her motorcycle, holding the phone and pretending not to understand. "What are you saying? It's too windy here; I can't hear you!" she said.
Caitlyn kept talking for a while.
But Hazel kept saying the same thing, and then mentioned she had temporarily gone back to her hometown. After hanging up, Hazel continued riding her motorcycle back to the countryside.
The reason she sent Katelyn over was that she saw Leonard that afternoon, walking very closely with a woman, as if they were meeting the parents.
Hazel secretly watched for a while and felt that Caitlyn was going to get hurt, so she decided to send Katelyn over.
"Better to be with Landon than with a cheating doctor," she thought.
Back at Caitlyn's place, she and Katelyn were having a stare-down.
Katelyn was small but not dumb. She could tell Caitlyn didn't want to take care of her, so she pouted, "You can call Landon! Anyway... no one wants me!"
Hearing this, Caitlyn sneered, "You think I won't call?"
She said that and dialed Landon's number. It was late, but Landon, in another city, was still up. He had just finished a meeting and was discussing things with Cherie when Caitlyn's call came through.
Landon stared at the caller ID for a long time before answering. His voice was low and a bit gentle. "What's up?" he asked.
Caitlyn handed the phone directly to Katelyn, who was sulking and refusing to speak, squatting in the corner. Caitlyn had no choice but to tell Landon, "Hazel sent Katelyn to me."
In the dark night, Landon's voice was husky and pleasant. He asked back, "Why did Hazel send Katelyn to you?"
Caitlyn nearly jumped up in anger. "How should I know? Landon, your daughter is here with me, and instead of reflecting on yourself, you're asking me?"
Compared to her, Landon was very calm. He even chuckled lightly and responded, "Why so mad? Is your relationship not going well? If that's the case, you can talk to me. I don't have much to offer, but I do have some experience."
After he finished talking, Caitlyn didn't say anything. She just held the phone in silence, and Landon could sense her emotions. He lowered his voice and apologized, "Caitlyn, I didn't mean it like that!"
Caitlyn asked, "Then what did you mean?"
She paused for a moment and continued, "You need to send someone to pick her up! It's not good for her to stay with me."
Landon didn't agree right away. He seemed to be thinking, and after a bit, he spoke softly, "I'll send someone to pick her up."
Hearing this, Caitlyn felt relieved.
On the other side, Landon put down his phone, rubbed his temples, and said to Cherie, "Get the car ready for me, I need to head back to Seattle."
Cherie was stunned and said, "You have an important meeting at ten in the morning."
Landon looked at her and responded, "The matters in Seattle are also very important to me."
Caitlyn hung up the phone and looked at the dark hallway, where Katelyn, dressed in black, was counting mosquitoes.
Katelyn was drawing circles on the ground with her little feet, pouting, "There are so many mosquitoes!"
Caitlyn put down her phone and thought for a moment. "I'll take you downstairs first. Landon will send someone to pick you up soon," she said.
Katelyn snorted softly and replied, "You still believe what Dad says? The TV says people like him are called unscrupulous businessmen, and you can't trust a word they say."
She looked at Caitlyn with disdain and disappointment. She continued, "You're so easily deceived by men! I think Dad likes to deceive you."
Hearing this, Caitlyn really wanted to throw Katelyn out. But what could she do with a little kid in the middle of the night?
Afraid of being discovered by Eden, she decided to stay outside with Katelyn. After a while, she killed several mosquitoes, and Katelyn said, "I told you there were a lot of mosquitoes!"
Caitlyn was about to scold her when the door opened.
Eden's voice came through, "Caitlyn, why are you outside in the middle of the night, and who are you talking to?"
The next moment, she was stunned.
She saw a little kid squatting at the end of the hallway. Although she couldn't see clearly, it was obvious the child came from a wealthy family. Eden couldn't help but ask, "Whose child is this?"
Caitlyn avoided the main issue and replied, "A child I used to teach."
As Caitlyn spoke, Katelyn stood up, pretending to be very well-behaved. She said, "Hello. My name is Katelyn, and my dad's name is Landon."
Hearing this, Eden was shocked. Coincidentally, the voice-activated light turned on, illuminating her pale face. She stared at Katelyn.
Although usually spoiled, Katelyn could read adults' expressions. Wearing her Manilove shoes, she moved her little feet back against the wall, her little face looking timid.
Eden's gaze suddenly turned to Caitlyn, and she said sternly, "Caitlyn, are you out of your mind? You're doing well with Leonard, and now you bring her home? Haven't you had enough trouble with Landon?"
Eden started to cry and added, "You're breaking my heart!"
Caitlyn quickly explained, "Mom, it's not like that! Hazel, who used to take care of me, brought Katelyn here. I have no contact with Landon."
Eden didn't believe her. "If there's been no contact, then why bring her to you? Doesn't she have a mom?" she asked.
On the side, Katelyn slowly said, "My mom is dead."
The atmosphere got tense.
After a while, Eden still emphasized, "In any case, Caitlyn, you are not allowed to have any more involvement with Landon!"
Caitlyn said, "Okay."
Feeling unwanted, Katelyn sniffled and said softly, "Can I go inside and put on some anti-itch cream? ... I'll definitely leave when my dad picks me up."
She was small but very sensitive, sensing that Eden didn't like her and even hated her. This realization left her dejected, and she had no desire to linger any longer.
Caitlyn looked at her pale little legs, covered in mosquito bites, looking quite pitiful, and said to Eden, "Let her wait inside. It's cold outside at night."
Eden didn't want to agree, but Katelyn's little nose was running. Seeing this, Eden snorted, "Have her family pick her up quickly."
She didn't want to see Katelyn, as it reminded her of the suffering Caitlyn endured with Landon. After entering the house, she pretended to go to bed, leaving Katelyn and Caitlyn staring at each other.
Katelyn looked around and said, "It's really small!"
Caitlyn took a bottle of anti-itch cream and sat Katelyn on the sofa, stretching out her little leg to apply it. "It's not as big as your room, right?" Caitlyn asked.
Katelyn honestly said, "Not as big as the bathroom."
Hearing her words, Caitlyn wanted to throw her out again but held back.
Katelyn's leg stopped itching, and the soft yellow light and the soft sofa made her feel very comfortable. Once she got comfortable, her bad habits resurfaced. Propping her chin up, she said, "Ms. Reynolds told me you used to live in a big house. This place is so small, you must not be used to it! ... Well, I'll let you be my mom. If you become my mom, you can live in a big house!"
She thought for a moment and added, "I'll be good to you, definitely won't bully you."
Caitlyn applied the cream harder, making Katelyn tremble in pain, tears welling up. But Katelyn was proud and didn't cry out.
Caitlyn put down the anti-itch cream and said harshly, "I have a boyfriend! Even if I didn't, I wouldn't be your mom. Let Landon find you a stepmother!"
Katelyn was quite disappointed and said, "Ms. Reynolds said if you don't agree, he might be single for life! ... Are you sure you don't want to consider it? Lots of pretty ladies want to be my dad's girlfriend, sometimes even deliberately getting close to him."
This reminded Caitlyn of Landon's flirtatious past. It wasn't pleasant!
Katelyn asked, "Are you angry?"
Caitlyn wouldn't admit it. "Don't mention Landon in front of me again!" she snapped.
Katelyn, understanding more than she let on, responded, "Not wanting to mention means you care! You're jealous!" This almost made Caitlyn lose her cool.
After a while, Katelyn leaned on the sofa and touched her stomach. "I'm hungry! Can you make me a snack?" she said.
"No!" Caitlyn didn't indulge her.
Katelyn waited for a while, realizing Caitlyn really wouldn't make her a snack. So she took out a small bag of chips from her backpack and started munching while watching cartoons.
Under the soft yellow light, her little face looked tender, with a sharp chin.
Caitlyn thought Katelyn hadn't been well taken care of. She stared at Katelyn for a while, and Katelyn's gaze shifted over as she asked softly, "Can I have a small blanket? Dad might not be able to pick me up."
Suddenly, Caitlyn felt a bit sad. She could feel Katelyn's vulnerable heart beneath her indifferent facade, and Caitlyn even felt some resentment toward Landon. Why have a child if he wouldn't take good care of her?
Caitlyn took Katelyn's chips and said, "What's so good about these? I'll make you some ravioli."
Hearing this, Katelyn was actually quite happy inside. But on the surface, she remained aloof. "You're pretty nice. Are you ready to be that doctor's wife? I heard Ms. Reynolds say so," she said.
Then Katelyn mimicked Hazel's voice, speaking softly. "That doctor appears to be a respectable and decent person, but he is a jerk behind the scenes—having his cake and eating it too. Ms. Robinson is in for a tough time!"
After speaking, Katelyn's eyes sparkled. "What does 'having his cake and eating it too' mean?" she asked.
Caitlyn's heart trembled upon hearing this. Why did Hazel say that?
However, Caitlyn wouldn't ask Katelyn about Leonard, so despite some doubts, she temporarily set them aside. She went to the kitchen, opened the fridge, and took out a bag of frozen ravioli.
After cooking, Katelyn started eating but still complained it wasn't handmade. Yet, when Caitlyn tried to take the bowl away, she reluctantly said, "It's okay!"
Caitlyn felt that Katelyn was never content.
Later, Katelyn even took things further by asking Caitlyn to give her a bath and change her into pajamas. In the end, she curled up in Caitlyn's bed and fell asleep.
