Chapter 62 We Are Mutually in Love
Charlotte expected Frederick to be upset about the delay of dinner, but his response surprised her.
Drawing her close, he murmured, "Already eaten, babe."
Blushing at his hidden meaning, she couldn't deny he had a shameless charm.
In a cheerful mood, Frederick led the way to the dining room. "I was joking! Let's go."
Before sitting down at the dinning table, Charlotte opted to freshen up, splashing cold water on her face in an attempt to compose herself. She knew she had to address the issue with Tina soon without burdening Frederick. Their dynamic didn't allow for her to lean on him for every problem; his time was precious!
Returning composed, she found a grand spread on the dining table, far more than she had prepared.
Casually, Frederick mentioned, "Had the chef send these in."
After a pause, he suggested, "If cooking's not your jam, Jessica can take over."
Quick to decline, Charlotte asserted, "No need. I've got this."
Understanding Frederick's need for privacy, she reasoned that involving Jessica would disrupt his evening work, a disruption she couldn't allow.
Respecting her decision, Frederick quietly savored his meal.
Wanting to contribute, Charlotte served him a bowl of soup.
Frederick looked up.
Charlotte whispered, "It looks pretty good. You should try."
Yet, instead of sipping the soup, he quipped, "If only you were this forward with kisses."
The air turned tense as their minds drifted to the car kiss, a moment etched beyond mere lips touching.
Flushed, Charlotte wondered how he could bring it up during dinner.
Post-meal, Charlotte tidied up before reaching for her phone to review the recordings, realizing the challenging road ahead with suing Tina. Manipulating within the legal bounds, Tina had covered her tracks well, an act Charlotte found despicable.
Her resolve shaken though, Charlotte couldn't let it slide.
Suddenly, a slender hand grasped her phone. After a swift browse, Frederick declared, "Suing won't work."
Shocked, Charlotte blurted, "You knew?"
Returning the phone, Frederick settled beside her, posing a question, "Were you asking about you being targeted or Ethan's affair?"
Amidst her surprise, Charlotte acknowledged Frederick's tolerance. Aware of Chloe's bond with her brother, she pondered Frederick's detached view of Ethan’s infidelity.
Frederick’s smile held a hint of mystery. Tenderly holding her chin, his tone turned dangerously warm. "Toys are cherished when they obey their owner. As long as the toy stays content with its holder, what else matters?"
Stunned, Charlotte gazed at him, unsure of her response.
Deciding to enlighten her, Frederick explained, "Chloe once attempted suicide, so it's impossible to make her break up now. Since they can't break up, let her have her fun. Once she's had enough, it won't be as exciting anymore! So, does it matter if Ethan is faithful or what kind of person he is? As long as Chloe is happy now, that's all that matters.
Conflicted, Charlotte traced parallels to her own situation. Despite Frederick’s care, ultimate contentment seemed to be the ultimate goal.
She remained silent for a long time. How could Frederick not see through her thoughts? Gently caressing her face, Frederick softly mused, "We're different. Ours is a mutual affection. Charlotte, do my features and physique appeal to you?"
Charlotte softly shut her eyes. Yes, she did.
