Chapter 785 Whom I Marry Has Nothing to Do with Mr. McCall!
But standing next to Grant was Clara.
She was holding a paper bag with a man's shirt, pants, and a tie.
Grant had just been at a business conference where someone accidentally spilled coffee on him, so he had to change clothes. But now, seeing Clara holding his clothes was quite intriguing.
Natalie watched them quietly. She didn't understand. She and Grant had broken up years ago, but since reuniting, he and Clara had been seen together multiple times, even announcing their engagement. So why was he questioning her in an accusatory tone in front of his fiancée?
Natalie looked at them calmly and said, "When you hit a certain age, you gotta get married, right?"
Grant's eyes darkened at her words.
He stared at Natalie intensely.
Clara, sensing his loss of composure, gently reminded him, "Grant."
Grant continued to stare at Natalie. After a long pause, he suddenly chuckled and said, "You're right. When you hit a certain age, you gotta get married! Is it Clayton?"
Clayton?
Chloe, standing nearby, knew Clayton. He used to like Molly. Later, he got close to Natalie, but they were just good friends, not marriage partner. Although she did think Clayton was a decent guy.
Besides, Chloe might be naive, but she wasn't stupid.
The young man in front of her looked dashing but his eyes were too dark which hinted that he may have grown up in an unhealthy environment. The way he looked at Natalie was more like he wanted to devour her!
He must be the guy who dated Natalie back then and Natalie was deeply hurt.
Now this man had a girlfriend but still came to bother her Natalie. Of course, Chloe had to protect Natalie. She smiled slightly and said, "You must be Mr. McCall! I've heard Gavin mention you often. It's a pleasure to finally meet you. And this must be Mrs. McCall! You two look perfect together."
Her words left Grant with no room to explain or argue.
Clara, standing beside him, didn't want to explain either.
Chloe's smile deepened. "Since you two have experience with weddings, why not give us some advice on what gifts to choose for the groom? Natalie and I have our eyes on about ten items, but we've heard that six is a good number. We're quite troubled by it!"
Clara glanced at the store's brand.
If they were to buy six items, it would cost at least hundreds of thousands of dollars. She didn't believe Natalie's family had that kind of money, so she stepped forward and picked out the most expensive items, "These six look pretty good."
She then looked at Chloe and Natalie.
She was waiting for them to embarrass themselves in front of Grant, so he would realize how wise it was to choose her. The Lynn family might not be super wealthy, but she was broad-minded and well-informed., unlike Natalie, who came from Copenhagen.
Chloe saw right through Clara's little scheme.
She carefully examined the items, which Clara interpreted as hesitation due to the high price.
Clara couldn't help but feel contemptuous.
After a long pause, Chloe softly said, "Wrap them up for me! Use a gold-plated box and send them to this address."
She wrote down The Hawkins Mansion address.
The sales associate nodded respectfully, "Yes, Mrs. Devereux. We will deliver the items within an hour. You just need to sign here."
Chloe smiled and signed her name.
After signing, she linked arms with Natalie to leave. Clara blocked their way, "You haven't paid yet. If you didn't bring enough, Mr. McCall can lend you some."
Chloe despised such two-faced behavior.
She glanced at Grant behind Clara, who remained silent, his gaze fixed on Natalie with a mix of love and hate.
Chloe smiled faintly, "Whether or not we pay is secondary. I'm just afraid you can't make decisions for Mr. McCall."
With that, she led Natalie away.
As they brushed past Grant, he instinctively grabbed Natalie's hand, "Are you really going to marry Clayton?"
"It's none of your business." Natalie pulled her hand away and followed Chloe out.
After they left, Clara immediately approached the sales associate to inquire about the details. The store manager came over, clearly displeased, "That was Mrs. Devereux. Even if she bought out our entire store, she could afford it. This building is owned by the Devereux Group. And Ms. Devereux is single. The one getting married is Lola from the Hawkins family. Have you heard about her and Mr. Flores? They broke up and got back together, and now they're finally having a grand wedding!"
The Devereux Group, the Hawkins family... Natalie's background?
Clara was stunned.
She watched Grant walk out without a word and quickly caught up to him, "You knew all along, didn't you? You knew she was a rich girl from the Devereux family, and that's why you never forgot her?"
Grant stopped.
He looked at Clara with a hint of coldness, "You're overthinking it."
With that, he walked away.
Behind him, Clara choked up and shouted, "Grant, you just don't want to admit it. All these years, you never accepted me because you still love her. Now you see, her family is so wealthy. How could she come back for you? She broke up with you because she looked down on you. She was just playing with you."
Grant ignored her.
That afternoon, Clara received a notice from the HR department, informing her that she was being transferred to a foreign branch for two years. Clara was furious and immediately called Alvina.
She knew Alvina would speak up for her because, she was the best wife for Grant in Alvina's mind.
Meanwhile, Natalie left the mall in a bad mood.
She was silent in the car, and Chloe gently said, "After all these years, you still haven't moved on. If you really like him, go after him. He and that woman don't seem like a couple to me. Their eyes are cold, not like they're in love."
Neither Andrew nor Chloe knew about Grant's background.
Natalie never mentioned it.
Years had passed, and she had broken up with Grant, so she saw no reason to bring it up.
Feeling exhausted, she leaned into Chloe's arms and whispered, "Mom, it's been eight years. I thought I forgot him, but ever since I came back to Syeattel, I keep running into him, and he keeps mocking me!"
Maybe she had been hesitant before, but now she made up her mind.
She decided to return to Copenhagen.
Her parents were getting older, and her brother was working hard in Syeattel. So she would stay in Copenhagen to take care of her parents. Or maybe she would find a suitable match from the suitors her family arranged. Love and passion, one impulsive act was enough.
Chloe had been bold once in her youth.
She didn't want Natalie to suffer the same pain, so she didn't say much, just gently stroked her hair and respected her decision.
A while later, Natalie returned to Copenhagen with Chloe, bringing a lot of belongings, so they took their own car.
On a cold winter morning.
The weather was freezing, and their breath turned to mist in the air, carried away by the biting wind.
Two black cars, one in front and one behind, left the mansion.
Gavin saw them off at the gate, watching the cars drive away before lighting a cigarette and walking back. He returned to the second-floor bedroom, where Molly was still sleeping.
He took off his light wool coat and sat on the bed, gently patting her butt.
"The sun's up, time to get up!"
Last night, Gavin had been relentless, like frying a small fish, turning her over and over again. She had no strength to get up. When she didn't move, Gavin slipped his hand under the covers, using his cold fingers to tease her.
Molly tried to avoid him, but Gavin was determined to play with her, and she couldn't escape.
She bit her lip and softly pleaded with him.
But the more she acted like a kitten, the more interested Gavin became. He started to get serious, teasing her while pressing his lips to hers, "Are my fingers cold? How does it feel compared to usual?"
Molly felt embarrassed and closed her eyes.
He bullied her so much that she softly begged him, saying shameless words, "It's different, not the same at all... Gavin... don't you have to go to the office?"
Gavin replied, "Once I finish up tonight, I'll be on vacation."
Gavin threw off the covers and lay down beside her. Molly was so embarrassed she quickly covered herself with her dress, not letting him touch her anymore.
But Gavin opened all the curtains, letting the sunlight flood in.
Even in her thirties, Molly's body was still like a young girl's. Gavin skipped breakfast, making Molly his breakfast several times, and stayed with her all afternoon, too lazy to go to the office.
That evening, they had a banquet they couldn't miss.
Molly's neck was covered in hickeys, so she refused to go. Gavin smiled and didn't force her.
She was introverted and Gavin never forced her to do things she didn't want to. With him and his father handling things, the women in the family only needed to be pampered and didn't have to worry about worldly matters.
He drove himself to the banquet, and as he left the mansion, he saw a familiar face.
A black Range Rover was parked at their gate, blending into the night.
The tech entrepreneur Grant was leaning against the car, smoking. Who knew how long he had been waiting there?
Gavin chuckled lightly.
He stopped the car and rolled down the window, politely saying, "Mr. McCall, enjoying the moonlight? Unfortunately, this isn't the mountains, the view isn't great, and you're blocking the way."
Grant's eyes lowered, glancing at him.
He recognized Gavin, Andrew's capable son.
When he returned to the country to start his business, his target was the Devereux Group. Now the time was almost ripe, but he couldn't make a move. It was ironic.
Gavin raised his hand, resting his elbow on the window, "But if you're waiting for Natalie, I can tell you the truth. She went back to Copenhagen with my mother! She might be going on dates around the New Year. A girl has to get married when she reaches a certain age! She can't give up the whole forest for one tree, especially when that tree never said it had to be her. Don't you think, Mr. McCall?"
Grant slowly exhaled a smoke ring.
Gavin pressed a button, slowly raising the window, his voice drifting away with the wind.
"Mr. McCall, time waits for no one, and no one will wait forever... If you can't let go of your hatred, don't bother my sister anymore, or you'll both end up hurt."
The black Bentley slowly drove away.
Grant finished his cigarette, slowly understanding Gavin's words.
Natalie had gone back to Copenhagen.
She was going on dates, planning to marry someone else. He finished his cigarette, tossed the butt, got in his car, and drove west, heading straight for Copenhagen.
He drove all night, arriving in Copenhagen at dawn.
He didn't go to a hotel but drove straight to The Devereux Mansion. He had been here before, as a child, with his mother causing a scene!
But he was too young then, so when he later met Natalie, he didn't recognize that the little girl under the wisteria tree was her.
Natalie didn't recognize him either.
