Chapter 849 Verity and Royce Perish Together, Benjamin Walsh Appears

They had been together long enough for Grant to read her mind.

As soon as Nancy opened her mouth, he could guess what she was thinking.

Before she could say anything more, he asked, "You want your mom to move in with us, don't you?"

She nodded softly, "Yeah," then added, "But she said no! Grant, she said she couldn't get used to it."

As she spoke, she wrapped her arms around Grant's neck.

Grant gently stroked the back of her head, his touch tender. He knew she was worried about his pride, afraid of hurting him.

But at his age, it really didn't matter.

Nancy continued, "I think my mom is more unwilling than anything else. Grant, I'm a bit worried."

Grant reassured her, "How about we call her in the morning, okay?"

Nancy leaned on his shoulder and softly said, "Okay."

She told him not to worry about the dishes, that she could do them in the morning... and with that, Nancy fell asleep.

But she woke up twice during the night.

Each time, she had a dream and woke up sweating.

She tried hard to recall the dream, but couldn't remember.

Since she couldn't sleep, Grant couldn't either. He got up to get her some water and talked with her...

After a while, Nancy felt bad that he was staying up with her when he had to work the next day.

She gently said, "You should sleep. I'll just sit here for a bit."

Grant couldn't bear to leave her.

He leaned against the headboard, letting her rest in his arms, gently patting her until she felt more at ease...

This time, she fell into a deep sleep.

When morning came, Nancy woke up.

Grant wasn't beside her.

She heard voices outside, sensing there were several people talking about a deceased person, and something about a third party... mixed with words like tragic.

Nancy threw on a robe and went out.

Several men with hats stood in the living room, talking to Grant.

When they saw Nancy, one of them asked, "Is this the deceased's daughter?"

Deceased's daughter?

Nancy froze, her face turning pale as she looked at Grant.

For a long moment, she couldn't say a word.

Grant quickly walked over, putting his arm around her shoulder, his voice very low, "Last night, your mother was in a car accident. She and two others in the opposite car died on the spot."

Though it was harsh, he told her the truth.

Nancy's face turned ashen.

It took her a while to process before she trembled, "But she came to see me yesterday. She even made a special meal for me. How could she suddenly be dead?"

Nancy wasn't stupid. She suddenly asked, "Grant, was the other car driven by my dad and his mistress?"

This time, not only did Grant fall silent, but the other men also didn't speak.

Nancy's parents were well-known, and this scandal would be ugly.

They hesitated before saying, "Ms. Walsh, maybe you and Mr. McCall can handle this. The other side left behind a little boy. The woman had no relatives to step in. If you don't consider adopting him, he might end up in an orphanage."

He paused, "Though it's a public institution, it can't compare to a home. Ms. Walsh, please think about it. There's no pressure."

As a woman, Nancy instinctively rejected the child.

If it weren't for that child, her mother wouldn't have died, and her family wouldn't be in this mess...

But she knew deep down, the real culprit was her father.

That was why her mother chose to die with him.

She didn't speak, and Grant understood. He called the men outside to talk...

When he returned, Nancy's face was streaked with tears. She asked if he could take time off to help with Verity's funeral.

Grant gently held her.

At that moment, they truly shared the same pain, only having each other left.

Because of the disgraceful circumstances, Nancy's parents' funeral was hastily arranged.

No one expected that Royce had a trick up his sleeve.

His will clearly stated that all his assets were left to his son, Benjamin Walsh, and Verity had signed it. Who knows how Royce managed to deceive her.

Benjamin was still a minor.

Nancy was his only relative, so she had to act as his guardian, managing his inheritance until he came of age...

When the lawyer announced this, Nancy sat alone in the Walsh Villa's hall for a long time.

The child, about seven or eight, was very pretty.

His hair was dark brown and slightly curly... he stood by Grant, timidly looking at Nancy.

Everyone said Nancy was his sister, but he could tell she didn't like him. She even seemed to hate him.

Benjamin thought, 'Is it because of Mom?'

But now, he didn't have a mom either.

Nancy sat in the hall.

Yes, she hated Benjamin.

She even thought about using her guardianship to donate all his inheritance before he came of age, making him grow up poor. She wanted to ruin him... so he would have a miserable life.

Those thoughts clung to her like demons.

Grant came over, gently pressing her shoulder, speaking softly, "Let's keep him."

Nancy looked at Benjamin and deliberately said, "If you want to stay with me, you won't have this nice house. You'll have to live in a leaky house, smaller than your current bathroom. Decide if you want to stay here or come with me."

She thought, even a fool would know what to choose.

But as she left, Benjamin grabbed her skirt.
