Chapter 36: Pleading

Charlotte's eyes were empty.

She stared at the man she once loved, feeling like he was a stranger. Did she ever really know him? How could he be so heartless?

Maria was so kind; how could she stab someone with a knife? It was clearly Ethan who provoked her, setting her up.

Charlotte spoke softly, "Ethan, please, let us go."

Ethan was about to respond when Charlotte gently knelt in front of him. Maria snapped out of it, making strange noises as if to stop Charlotte.

Charlotte refused to get up, staying on her knees.

Tears streamed down her face, making her already bright eyes even more striking. She trembled as she spoke, "Mr. Cooper, I was young and foolish when I fell in love with you. I didn't know any better. For the sake of the good times we had, please let my dad and Maria go. Please!"

Her humility made Maria cry out in pain.

She had come to her senses, sobbing and apologizing to Charlotte, trying to pull her up.

Charlotte was William's only daughter; she couldn't kneel to Ethan!

Charlotte didn't move, her eyes stubbornly fixed on Ethan. Ethan had been with her for four years; he knew her well.

Charlotte was gentle but had her moments of stubbornness. She had once loved him deeply, and now she was kneeling to leave him.

Ethan ground his teeth, furious, and asked, "What if I don't let you go, Charlotte? What will you do?"

Charlotte tightened her fists. "Aren't you worried I'll reveal your real self to the Hawkins family?"

"Go ahead and expose me!" Ethan's face twisted into a sneer. "Let's see if Chloe forgives me, if your family comes out unscathed, and if Frederick helps you."

Mentioning Frederick made Ethan's wound hurt even more.

He was utterly enraged. Only now did Charlotte see the real Ethan.

Ethan, enduring the pain, walked over and pulled Charlotte close.

He gently caressed her face, his voice low and hoarse. "Come back to me! Otherwise, I can't promise what I'll do! Maybe I'll have Maria locked up for ten years for assault, or maybe I'll take action against William."

A slap landed on his face.

Charlotte was shaking with anger. "Ethan, you jerk!"

A strong hand grabbed her wrist.

Ethan pressed his face close to hers, coldly saying, "Just realizing that now? You didn't say that when you were into me. You didn't say that when you blushed, waiting for me to kiss you. Charlotte, back then you claimed I was the most handsome man alive, remember that? Need me to refresh your memory?"

Maria struggled, trying to fight him.

Ethan let go of Charlotte and promptly instructed security to subdue Maria, his thin lips spitting out cold words, "Call the police. Tell them Maria assaulted me with intent to harm."

Charlotte grabbed his hand.

Ethan shook her off, lightly licking the blood on his lips. "Charlotte, you've really pissed me off."

In the distance, the sound of sirens grew closer.
