Chapter 630 I Don't Want to Choose Any of Them
Kingsley asked, and the servant naturally replied, "Ms. Butler is waiting outside!"
After speaking, she sneaked a glance at Hannah.
The servants in the house were perceptive. Although Amara had a child with the Hawkins Family and was about to marry Kingsley, she hadn't been around for a while. They didn't even have dinner together on New Year's Eve.
In contrast, Hannah had reappeared.
The servant was certain that Hannah was the one Kingsley would marry in the future.
After speaking, Kingsley understood Amara didn't want to come in. So, he put down the magazine, grabbed Jesse's coat, and helped him put it on, even giving him a small pillow to hold.
Kingsley leaving the house startled Frederick.
Frederick's been really upset with Kingsley lately, who had broken up with Amara again. What was the point of making so much money?
Frederick looked at Jesse, all dressed up, and pushed the cards in his hand aside. "Where are you planning to go?"
Jesse's voice was clear. "Mommy is here to pick me up!"
Everyone in the hall fell silent, looking at Kingsley.
Charlotte spoke gently, "It's New Year's, and you didn't even invite Amara in?"
The servant, afraid of getting herself in trouble, said quickly, "Ms. Butler brought gifts."
Charlotte looked at Kingsley, feeling he was unreliable. As an elder, it wasn't convenient for her and Frederick to greet Amara, so she called Lola over, "Take Jesse and invite Amara in."
Lola also glanced at Kingsley, thinking he was quite stubborn.
Lola picked up Jesse, kissed his little cheek, and said, "Let's go find your mommy!"
While Amara hadn't come in yet, Frederick began to scold Kingsley, "You're getting more and more arrogant! I see you usually don't care about things, but why do you lose your manners when it comes to Amara? It's cold outside, and you let Amara stand out there! You two didn't become lovers probably because you're not considerate enough."
Kingsley didn't bother arguing. He strolled back to the sofa and continued reading the magazine.
Logically, the Cook Family should have left by now, but Hannah's parents were unwilling to give up. They thought Hannah was better than Amara in every way and shouldn't have lost to her.
They gave Hannah a look. Hannah bit her lip and shamelessly sat next to Kingsley, leaning in. "What are you reading?"
Kingsley looked up, glanced at her indifferently, but didn't push her away.
At the entrance, Lola brought Amara in.
As soon as she entered, Amara saw the intimate scene: Kingsley leaning back on the sofa, looking relaxed, with Hannah by his side. On the opposite sofa were Hannah's parents.
Such a scene was undoubtedly embarrassing for Amara.
Frederick knew exactly what Kingsley was up to; he was trying to get under Amara's skin. He couldn't just kick the Cook Family out, so he brought Jesse over and plopped him into Kingsley's arms. "What's so fascinating about those magazines? Take care of Jesse."
Jesse lay on Kingsley's shoulder.
Kingsley looked up and saw Amara but didn't bother to get up. Instead, he handed the magazine to Jesse.
Jesse, being at that playful age, started tearing the magazine and folding paper airplanes.
In the hall, everyone from both families stared at Amara, making her uncomfortable. She kept saying, "It's getting late; I'll take Jesse and leave."
Charlotte tried to keep her. "The family was thoughtless. You've been standing outside for a while, haven't you? Have a cup of coffee to warm up before you go."
Charlotte was always gentle and kind, consistently treating Amara well. Since it was New Year's, Amara agreed.
Sienna pulled her over. "We're one short for a game! Play a couple of rounds with us! Sit here and watch out for Natalie cheating!"
Natalie started arguing with Sienna.
Andrew and Chloe exchanged a glance. Chloe took out two thick envelopes from her bag. "You must be Amara! I've heard so much about you from the family. It's nice to finally meet you."
The envelopes were too thick for Amara to accept comfortably.
Andrew smiled. "This is for Jesse's mom! Jesse is so adorable."
At that moment, Charlotte brought in the coffee. "Take it! It's rare for Kingsley's aunt and uncle to visit."
Amara felt uneasy but accepted it. She was treated well by the Hawkins Family, which made Hannah's parents uncomfortable. Hannah had been sitting there all this time, and Andrew and his wife hadn't given her any gifts, but Amara, an outsider, received them.
Leah raised her voice. "Amara isn't even Kingsley's wife. How can she accept money? What will people say about Kingsley finding a wife in the future?"
Her words embarrassed Amara, and even Hannah thought Leah went too far, tugging at her sleeve.
Leah whispered, "If we don't put her in her place, she'll keep clinging to Kingsley, and you'll be the one crying."
She spoke loud enough for Kingsley and most people in the hall to hear! Frederick was the first to lose his temper. "Since when do outsiders get to worry about the Hawkins Family's affairs?"
Leah was about to speak, but Hannah, her face flushed, interrupted, "Mom! Stop talking!"
Leah finally quieted down.
Amara couldn't stay any longer. Without even drinking the coffee, she put on her coat and walked over to Kingsley, saying softly, "I'll take Jesse and go."
The atmosphere was tense, and even young Jesse sensed something was wrong and looked unhappy.
Frederick felt heartbroken for both Jesse and Amara. He glared at Kingsley. "Say something!"
Kingsley slowly sat up straight.
At this moment, Amara was close enough for him to see the tears in her eyes. Being mocked like that would make her feel humiliated.
He said calmly, "I'll see them to the car."
Frederick was furious when he heard this.
Amara held Jesse and gracefully said goodbye to everyone, not wanting to upset him. Charlotte, unwilling to let her go, asked Sienna to accompany them, fearing they might argue again.
Kingsley went out without a coat.
Sienna walked beside him, whispering, "Kingsley, you behaved terribly."
Kingsley took out a cigarette, lit it, and turned to Sienna. "Wait here."
Sienna refused. But Kingsley directly moved her aside and then walked unhurriedly to Amara's car. He opened the back door, and Amara leaned in to place Jesse inside, fastening his seatbelt.
Amara looked up and met Kingsley's eyes.
His gaze was cold. "Are you upset?"
Amara didn't deny it. Under the moonlight, her face was calm. "Kingsley, if this happens again, I suggest not bringing Jesse over. He's too young to understand adult matters."
After speaking, Amara opened the driver's door, and Kingsley slammed it shut.
"What are you doing?" Before she could react, he had her pinned against the car door, easily controlling her with one hand.
Kingsley's face looked grim. He gripped her chin lightly. "You know Jesse is still young! How could you let him become a child from a single-parent family?"
Amara's chest heaved slightly. She tilted her head up, looking at Kingsley, certain he was just causing trouble.
She said coldly, "Kingsley, did you give me a choice? If you hadn't taken the Ascend Global Group's contract, we might have had room to negotiate. But you did, so what could I do? Should I betray Landon, leave him, and take his project? My other option is to become your wife, stop working, and obey you in everything, right?"
Amara was always mindful of Jesse being in the car, so she lowered her voice. "Unfortunately, I don't want either."
Kingsley's expression grew colder.
He slowly released her, stepped back, and gave a faint smile. "Good night, Ms. Butler."
His words were tinged with mockery.
Amara had wanted to talk to him properly. They couldn't be a couple anymore, but they still had Jesse, so at least in front of him, they should maintain a warm relationship.
But Kingsley was always prickly around her. She couldn't say a word of what she wanted to, feeling embarrassed herself. She opened the car door, got in, and drove away.
Kingsley stood there, expressionless.
From a distance, Natalie ran over, panting. "Amara forgot her gift."
Natalie's voice grew smaller as she saw Kingsley's dark expression.
Sure enough, Kingsley said coldly, "She doesn't want it."
Natalie pouted. "It was Hannah's mom who humiliated her. How could she take it? Kingsley, you don't even like Hannah, so why use her to upset Amara? What if you can't get Amara back?"
Kingsley walked past her. "Who said I want her back?"
Natalie made a face behind his back. "You're so stubborn!"
Kingsley went upstairs in a bad mood as soon as he returned. Leah hinted for Hannah to follow, but blushing, she didn't dare.
Seeing the tense atmosphere, Charlotte subtly suggested it was time to leave. Then the Cook Family finally left.
Frederick was about to go upstairs to give Kingsley a good talking-to, but Charlotte stopped him.
She said softly, "Kingsley is angry! The more you push, the harder it will be for Amara! Unless you take back his position as president of the Hawkins Group and go back to work yourself."
Frederick was silent.
Charlotte gently stroked his arm, speaking softly, "They grew up in different environments and need time to adjust. It's impossible for Amara to give up her career now, so Kingsley has to compromise. If he doesn't, their relationship won't last. They have a child together. No matter how angry they get, they can't sever their bond."
Frederick was still unhappy. "Hannah clings to him, and he doesn't push her away?"
Charlotte gave him a charming look.
She said slowly, "Back then, you had plenty of women around you to make me jealous. Kingsley's private life is way more sorted out than yours."
Frederick was anxious. "That was ages ago! And I haven't had sex with any of them."
Charlotte leaned on his shoulder. "I believe you."
Frederick gently stroked Charlotte's hair, sighing. "These kids are becoming more and more of a handful! I noticed that Lola and Johnny's relationship isn't what it used to be. I asked, but they tight-lipped. Even Angelina couldn't tell me anything."
Charlotte patted him, trying to comfort him.
Frederick thought it over, then said, "Compared to our younger days, these are minor issues."
Charlotte smiled faintly. That night, she was in the study, looking through some confidential documents from the Carter Group. She had gone to great lengths to obtain them. Frederick would be furious if he knew.
The Carter Group was in a tough spot, with their Syeattel branch's project needing financing and encountering challenges.
Charlotte put down the documents and made a phone call. "Mr. Palmer, I need your help."
A few days after New Year's, Amara and Kingsley had no contact.
But on the fifth day after New Year's, it snowed. Jesse, being playful, caught a cold and had a high fever. He was hospitalized for two days, receiving IV drips. Jesse was very uncomfortable and unusually demanded to see his dad.
