Chapter 600 Long Time No See!
After Landon finished talking, he was ready to hop out of the car.
But Amara wasn't having it.
She didn't want to get tangled up with Kingsley again, especially with Caitlyn around and her own big belly making things awkward.
After more than six months, Kingsley finally found a girl who seemed like a good match for him.
The blind date Ralph mentioned must be Caitlyn!
Amara quickly called out to Landon.
She came up with a pretty lame excuse. "I had some disagreements with him at work before, and it wasn't a pleasant departure! Mr. Carter, let's just forget it!"
Landon gave her an understanding look.
He smiled. "Since you had a rough time with him, you stay here. I'll go say hi!"
Amara let out a sigh of relief.
The driver up front was quick on the uptake. He jumped out of the car, ran over, and opened the rear door. "Mr. Carter!"
Landon was the president of the Carter Group in Bostan. Even though he was over 40, he still had his charm, keeping his looks and physique in check. No signs of his wild youth left.
Over there, Kingsley was grabbing his luggage. He bent down and said to Caitlyn, who was close by, "We're not really a match, are we?"
Caitlyn had a bit of a stubborn streak.
"I told my family I had a boyfriend, but they didn't believe me and sent someone to follow me. Even if not for Jimmy's sake, just because you left me hanging last time, you have to help me this once!"
"Why should I help you?" Kingsley shrugged her hand off, but Caitlyn clung to him again, making it look like a sweet moment from a distance.
"Kingsley, what a coincidence!" Landon's light call startled them.
Kingsley looked up and saw Landon. He was pretty surprised. "What are you doing in Syeattel?"
Landon's admiration for Charlotte was well-known in both Bostan and Syeattel, and he didn't hide it at all. Every year on Charlotte's birthday and Valentine's Day, Landon would send expensive gifts.
Charlotte didn't want to accept them, but Landon kept sending them for the past twenty years.
At first, Frederick would curse Landon every time he got a gift, but over time, he got used to it and treated it as Landon's way of showing his appreciation to the Hawkins Family!
Kingsley found these things both funny and annoying.
But he had to admit, even though Landon was a lovesick guy, he was really good at business.
Landon looked at him, then at Caitlyn, and smiled knowingly. "Your girlfriend? Aren't you going to introduce her?"
Kingsley gave a faint smile. "Just a friend."
But Caitlyn clung to his arm again. "Hello, Mr. Carter!"
Kingsley pulled his arm away. He wasn't a warm person by nature. He checked his watch. "Mr. Carter, it's getting late. I have to catch my flight."
Landon tilted his head slightly and nodded. "Kingsley, aren't you going to ask me why I'm at the airport? Your temperament is really like Frederick's, not much like Charlotte's. You're too indifferent."
Then Kingsley saw Landon's car and said, "Mr. Carter, are you here to pick up a client?"
Landon smiled charmingly. "Yes, with my secretary! Speaking of which, my secretary is different from me. She has lived here for a long time. Kingsley, do you want to meet her?"
Kingsley was in a hurry, and he didn't want to be stuck with Caitlyn any longer.
He thought for a moment and said, "Maybe next time."
Landon just smiled. "That's a bit of a pity."
Kingsley gave him a long look, then walked off with his luggage. Caitlyn stomped her foot behind him, clearly frustrated.
Landon slipped his hands into his pockets and smirked. "If I were you, I'd give up now! He's not the right guy for you."
Caitlyn was using her family's pressure to cling to Kingsley, which wasn't a big deal. But the kicker was that Kingsley only had eyes for Amara. Even if they were apart, she was pregnant with his kid, sitting right in the back seat.
Caitlyn turned around, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Mr. Carter, you really like to meddle, don't you?"
"For your own good!" Landon said, about to get back in the car.
Caitlyn took a couple of steps. "I want to hitch a ride back."
"Not convenient! Too crowded!"
Caitlyn was fuming. What kind of person was this? He looked classy, but he had no manners at all!
Landon leisurely lit a cigarette, watching her retreating figure. He chuckled to himself, thinking, 'If Caitlyn really got in the car, Amara might cry on the spot!'
After they left, Amara got out of the car and walked over to him. "Mr. Carter!"
Landon put out the cigarette and switched back to his businesslike demeanor, saying calmly, "You don't want to see Kingsley, and I won't force you. But I want to tell you, if he doesn't know you're pregnant, he might end up in a business marriage one day."
Landon didn't interact much with Kingsley.
But he could see that Kingsley's feelings for Amara weren't strong enough to last forever.
Kingsley was naturally indifferent. After breaking up with Amara, he might have the attitude that it didn't matter who he married; it was just a matter of time.
She was very grateful that he saw through it but didn't say it out loud.
Landon understood her attitude and just said, "As long as you don't regret it."
How could she regret it? They were from entirely different worlds. If they ever had a quarrel in the future, she would always be at a disadvantage, always the one unworthy of being Kingsley's wife.
She once liked him so much, but she also had her pride.
Landon went alone to pick up the client, letting Amara wander around freely. Only then did Amara realize that he knew many niche languages and didn't really need her.
She came to the railing outside the airport. There were dozens of planes on the tarmac, but she could recognize the Hawkins Family's private jet at a glance. Kingsley was inside at that moment.
After the snow, the sky was clear.
The wings glinted silver, and Amara felt a sting in her eyes. She thought it was the glare.
The private jet started to taxi, slowly accelerating on the runway. As it passed by Amara, her heart ached and she thought, 'Kingsley, is this our delayed goodbye?'
Finally, the private jet took off, flying towards an unknown destination.
Seeing the plane become a small black dot, she silently recited Kingsley's name in her heart. Suddenly, she felt a movement in her lower abdomen; it was the baby moving.
Amara looked down and gently soothed the baby.
Two years later, Kingsley returned, having successfully acquired a large energy company in Libya, making the Hawkins Group the second largest in the world. The Hawkins Group's stock had risen by fifty percent compared to three years ago.
His career was thriving, but he still didn't have a wife.
After returning to Syeattel, the Hawkins Family picked several suitable girls from their social circle for him. All of them were top-notch in looks and talent. Two months later, Kingsley had gone on a couple of dates with Hannah Cook, the daughter of the Cook Family, but he still didn't feel moved.
At 30, Kingsley still wasn't all that into women.
He figured his choice of Hannah was mostly because of her blonde hair and the fact that she had the same habit as Amara.
The first time they had dinner, Hannah pulled out a hand cream and carefully applied it. Kingsley recognized that brand. He stared at it for a few seconds, and Hannah smiled awkwardly.
"It smells pretty good," Kingsley said casually.
He was good-looking, mature, and charming, and Hannah was totally smitten.
That day, Kingsley had a business engagement, and Hannah tagged along.
Hannah looked a bit shy, and Kingsley guessed it was the Cook Family's plan. They wanted to lock things down early. He looked at Hannah and finally said indifferently, "Let's go together."
While Hannah was getting her hair styled, he patiently waited.
He was like other men, gentle and polite to his girlfriend, treating her with respect.
After another six months, if there were no major personality issues, they could get married. Then they could have a child for the Hawkins Family. He didn't necessarily need a son, but the Hawkins Family did need a male heir.
Hannah's gentle nature made her suitable to be his wife.
But every time Kingsley thought about it, he would remember Amara. When he wanted to marry Amara, his feelings were completely different. He was eager to start a family with her and have children, not for the sake of the Hawkins Family heir.
But in the end, he was the one who said those hurtful words.
Amara had been gone from Kingsley's life for three years.
Was Amara doing well?
Kingsley wanted to ask, but he didn't know whom to ask. Three years had passed, and except for the occasional vague memory of Amara, everyone around him had almost forgotten her. No one mentioned her in front of him, as if Amara never existed. Although he continued to live his life well, he still couldn't get over her leaving.
Feeling frustrated, Kingsley got up and went to the smoking area. Because of his status and looks, the young staff at the salon were secretly admiring him.
Kingsley stood by the floor-to-ceiling window and lit a cigarette.
The sound of high heels approached, accompanied by a staff member's voice. "Ms. Butler, we will try our best to meet Mr. Carter's requirements. Please put in a good word for us. I know you are his best secretary."
Kingsley smirked slightly.
These private conversations were not surprising. He didn't mind. Just as he was about to turn around, a soft voice came from behind. "I'll try to communicate with Mr. Carter!"
Amara shook her head and said, "Mr. Carter has too many female companions!"
Kingsley's body stiffened. He slowly turned around, thinking it might just be a similar voice. How could it be such a coincidence? How could she be here?
But when he turned around, he saw Amara, slender and not very tall, in a dark suit that accentuated her curves.
Her hair had grown longer, loosely tied at the back, making her small face look even more delicate.
Her facial features hadn't changed, but she looked different. She had shed her youthful naivety. Although she looked gentle, someone like Kingsley could see her competence and efficiency at a glance.
Amara also saw him and was slightly stunned, her red lips slightly parted as she gazed directly at him.
Time seemed to stand still. They locked eyes, emotions swirling. Years had passed, but neither had truly moved on. This unexpected meeting left them so stunned that they couldn't even manage a simple "long time no see."
The manager was taken aback for a moment, then quietly asked Amara, "Do you know Mr. Hawkins?"
Amara finally snapped out of it and forced a smile. "I used to be his secretary."
The manager showed an expression of realization. She was quick on the uptake and immediately said, "I'll go get two cups of coffee. You can catch up."
Before Amara could decline, a light footstep sounded, and a young, gentle girl fell into Kingsley's arms, seemingly unintentionally but more like playfully. "Kingsley, this dress is uncomfortable."
Hannah looked great in the pretty, youthful light pink dress.
But Kingsley just helped her stand up straight, his eyes still fixed on Amara. In a slow tone, he said, "Amara, long time no see! This is my girlfriend, Hannah Cook."
Hannah was taken aback.
She had gone on several dates with Kingsley and had run into his friends, but he had never introduced her so formally.
Hannah couldn't help but feel a bit delighted, playfully saying, "If you had told me a friend would be here, I wouldn't have been so embarrassed."
Hannah extended her hand. "Hello, Amara."
Amara looked at the slender hand, feeling a bit dazed. Kingsley was still staring intently at Amara's face.
After a moment, Amara extended her hand and shook Hannah's.
Amara showed a professional smile. "Ms. Cook, your dress is beautiful. It suits you well! Mr. Hawkins, I have some work to do, so I won't disturb you."
Amara nodded slightly to them and left gracefully.
Kingsley watched her back, his Adam's apple moving slightly.
Hannah leaned against him, whispering, "Amara is so beautiful! She looks very capable. Kingsley, will you dislike me for being slow-witted?"
Kingsley withdrew his gaze.
He sat on the sofa, casually flipping through a magazine, his tone indifferent. "Of course not."
Hannah couldn't help but feel delighted, more than a little shy.
Hannah sat next to him, asking softly what he was looking at. Kingsley looked up. "Aren't you trying on dresses? Why not try a few more?"
She indeed had seen several nice dresses just now!
Hannah happily left, leaving Kingsley alone on the sofa. The magazine in his hand fell.
He took out a cigarette from his pocket.
But his fingers were trembling, and he couldn't light the cigarette after several tries. Finally, the cigarette broke.
Amara was back!
Kingsley made a call to Landon. After thinking it over, he realized that Landon had done it on purpose at the airport back then.
Amara had been working with Landon all along.
In Syeattel, the only person with the last name Carter and many female companions was Landon.
The call connected, and Landon said cheerfully, "Kingsley, this call is two years late! Is it true that you in love get dumber? Otherwise, with your intelligence, you would have returned to Syeattel within a month back then. Did you run into Amara? But you've realized it too late!"
Kingsley gritted his teeth. "Mr. Carter, you are really something!"
"I gave you a chance, but you didn't take it. How can you blame me?"
Kingsley hung up the phone.
It wasn't hard to find Amara's number now. He quickly found it and stared at the unfamiliar number for a long time before sending a few words: [Long time no see!]
