Chapter 299 Charlotte, You've Really Changed a Lot
Charlotte bolted to the nursery.
Kingsley was sick.
Charlotte was freaking out. She threw on some clothes and barked at the servant, "Get the car ready; we're hitting the hospital now."
She was losing it.
Frederick grabbed her hand. "The driver's gonna take half an hour to get here. I'll drive."
He scooped up Kingsley.
Being tall, carrying the kid was a breeze for him. Charlotte hustled after him.
Charlotte yanked open the car door and jumped in. Frederick gently handed Kingsley to her, and their eyes locked.
Frederick murmured, "Charlotte, I know you're mad at me! But Lola and Kingsley are my kids too. I have a deep affection for them!"
Charlotte's eyes got a bit misty, but she kept quiet.
She figured now wasn't the time to argue.
The black car zoomed through the night.
Half an hour later, they rolled up to the hospital.
After a check-up, they found out Kingsley had acute pneumonia. It wasn't too bad, but he had to stay in the hospital for a week.
Kingsley cried until his little face turned red.
Charlotte was heartbroken.
Late at night, Kingsley's fever finally broke.
Charlotte sat by the bed, gently stroking Kingsley's tiny face. She felt super guilty; all the moving around wasn't good for Kingsley's health.
Frederick stood by the window, quietly watching Charlotte.
Lately, he'd been looking at her through a lens colored by gender and sexual attraction, but now she was just a young mom, her eyes full of worry for their kids.
Right then, she looked so fragile.
Frederick couldn't help but walk over. He gently stroked Charlotte's long hair, resting her head against his stomach. Maybe she was too tired, and she didn't pull away.
She even closed her eyes for a moment.
But the tenderness only lasted a few seconds before she quickly pushed him away.
Frederick said hoarsely, "You should get some sleep. I'll watch the kid."
How could she sleep?
She went to the bathroom, wrung out a hot towel, and gently wiped Kingsley's little body. Then she went back to wash the towel.
Frederick stood behind her and asked softly, "How did we get along before?"
Charlotte's hand paused as she hung the towel.
She knew him too well.
Everything he'd done tonight, and this question now, showed he wanted to come back to the family. Charlotte said calmly, "What's the point of asking that?"
Frederick rested his face on her shoulder and said softly, "Charlotte, can you tell me, please?"
Charlotte smiled faintly. "You're not him."
She gently pushed him away and said seriously, "Frederick, we're divorced. Besides the kids, there's no need for any other interactions, and definitely no need for any confusion. You should leave in the morning."
Frederick felt a bit let down.
Under the dim light, he looked at her and said softly, "Kingsley is my son too."
He probably really wanted to be a good dad; he stayed in the hospital for the next few days.
Kingsley was much better and would be discharged the day after tomorrow.
Charlotte sat in the ward, looking at some documents. When she looked up, she saw Frederick holding Kingsley and feeding him milk. After a few days of practice, he was now pretty good at it.
Kingsley was snuggled in his arms, and Frederick's expression was super gentle.
Charlotte watched quietly.
At that moment, she saw the old Frederick, the one before his memory loss, who was also so gentle with Lola. She felt a bit sad, her eyes getting misty.
Frederick looked up and saw her distress.
Charlotte whispered, "I'm gonna get a cup of coffee."
With that, she got up, wrapped her shawl around her, and left. Frederick didn't stop her; he could tell Charlotte was thinking about the old "Frederick."
Charlotte finally relaxed after leaving the inpatient department.
Charlotte ordered a cup of coffee and sat down, holding it and sipping slowly.
She didn't expect to run into Brenda and Robert.
Robert was pretty annoyed. He'd only hooked up with Brenda a few times, and now she was all over him, insisting on meeting him.
He played with a cigarette between his fingers. "What? Need more cash again?"
Brenda slid a pregnancy test result across the table to Robert, her voice barely a whisper. "It's not about money, Robert. I'm pregnant."
Robert scoffed. "Don't BS me. I always use protection."
Brenda looked down. "The first time, yeah, but then you got all into it again, and..."
Robert remembered.
But he knew Brenda had done it on purpose.
He was ticked off. After a bit, he grumbled, "I'll give you some cash. Get rid of it."
He was only willing to shell out $200,000.
Brenda bit her lip and said softly, "I want to keep it."
Robert stared at her. After a long pause, his lips twitched like he might give in.
But just then, a family of three walked into the café.
It was Lily and Bradley.
They had come to see Kingsley and spotted Charlotte, so they came over to say hi.
Unexpectedly, Robert was there too.
Lily felt super awkward, and Robert's cigarette snapped in two between his fingers. He watched the woman he had once loved, his wife of several years, now happy with someone else.
Robert's eyes turned red.
Looking back at Brenda, his tone was firm. "Get rid of it. I'll give you $500,000."
Brenda still wanted to haggle.
Robert wrote a check and said coldly, "Get lost."
Brenda wasn't dumb; she didn't dare keep the kid.
Meanwhile, Lily and Bradley went to the ward, and Charlotte kept sipping her coffee.
Robert walked over and sat down across from her, his gaze intense.
He had a partnership with Vertex Innovations Group now.
Robert had never thought he'd work closely with Charlotte, nor had he expected her to change so much.
He had messed up in his youth.
He went back and forth in his mind, but there were some things he could only tell Charlotte.
"Charlotte, you'll probably laugh at me if I say I regret it. But I really do regret it. No matter how many women I've been with, none compare to Lily's sincerity."
He wished he could turn back time, but he knew it was impossible.
Charlotte smiled faintly.
Robert's gaze deepened. "Charlotte, you've really changed a lot."
After all, they had known each other since they were kids. After more than ten years, it was inevitable to feel a bit nostalgic when they met again.
Charlotte still smiled faintly.
She had agreed to invest $200 million in Robert's company, and she spoke to him with a calm demeanor.
Robert looked at her face, somewhat lost in thought, remembering Lily.
Just then, another person sat down beside them.
It was none other than Frederick.
Lily and Bradley had gone to the ward, so he came over, worried that she might feel sad alone.
Unexpectedly, she seemed to be having a pleasant conversation with Robert.
Frederick felt that Charlotte was too attractive outside; she was so beautiful.
Frederick's tone was quite gentle. "Why are you sitting here for so long?"
Robert, being a guy, could easily see Frederick's jealousy. He was quite pleased. 'Let's see how you chase Charlotte!'
He stood up and said in a very eager tone, "I'll come to Vertex Innovations Group in a few days to sign the contract!"
Charlotte nodded.
As soon as Robert left, Frederick started questioning, "He's not trying to hit on you, is he?"
"You're crazy." Charlotte didn't want to deal with him and got up, wrapping her shawl around her.
Frederick grabbed her slender wrist. "Charlotte."
Charlotte shook off his hand.
When she reached the restroom door, Frederick grabbed her and dragged her into the women's restroom.
Behind a thin door, she didn't dare scream, so she whispered, "Frederick, are you nuts?"
Frederick wrapped an arm around her waist, leaned in, and gently inhaled her scent at her neck, his voice hoarse. "Promise me you won't get involved with other men."
"We're divorced!"
"I still want you. I want you to be my wife. Charlotte, give me a chance."
"You're insane!"
Behind the thin door, Brenda covered her mouth, unable to believe what she was hearing.
She couldn't believe that Frederick had fallen in love with Charlotte.
She couldn't believe that such a proud man would beg for a woman's love like this.
