Chapter 690 Eden and Landon Face Off
It started raining out of nowhere that night. The light drizzle made the window eaves all wet, with tiny streams of water running down the glass and dripping below.
Katelyn, lying on the bed, looked so beautiful and peaceful, even her breathing seemed sweet. Caitlyn was sitting on the edge of the bed, staring off into space.
Right then, Landon knocked on the door.
When she opened it, he was standing there, half-soaked, like he'd just come from the ocean, bringing a cool breeze and some moisture with him.
Under the light, Caitlyn and Landon locked eyes. After what felt like forever, Caitlyn finally asked, "Weren't you on a business trip?"
Landon kept his eyes on her, not looking away for a second, and after a bit, he said, "I drove back!"
Caitlyn stepped aside to let him in, explaining, "She's asleep! I will use a small blanket to carry her out."
Landon closed the door, wiped the rain from his hair, and whispered, "I'll go in and see her."
But Caitlyn stopped him, "Landon, do you think that's a good idea?"
Landon's deep eyes stayed on her. He had just called Hazel, who had mentioned that Leonard was dining with another girl and meeting her parents, but he figured Caitlyn didn't know. Being the mature guy he was, Landon didn't bring it up at that time.
After a moment, he said, "I drove back, and I have to head out again in half an hour."
Caitlyn frowned. "You're not taking her with you?"
Landon was already heading towards the bedroom, saying, "I can take her with me, but it's not very safe. Because the car I drove back doesn't have a child seat."
Caitlyn was about to lose it. "Didn't you leave any servants at home?"
Landon was at the bedroom door, his long fingers on the doorknob, and he said softly, "I've always taken care of her since she was little, and now besides Hazel, there's no one suitable to take care of her. Caitlyn, would you mind helping me out for a few days? I'll pick her up when I get back from my trip. It won't be a bother."
Caitlyn felt drained. She looked down and said in a dry voice, "Landon, your presence itself is a bother."
"Am I troubling you?" Landon asked.
"Doesn't that mean you still care? Caitlyn... have you ever asked yourself, right now, is Leonard more important to you or am I more unforgettable? Why don't you follow your heart and make a good choice!" The room got a bit tense after he said that.
Caitlyn gave a bitter smile and replied, "Landon, don't you think it's ridiculous to say these things now? Honestly, if Hazel hadn't sent Katelyn over, we wouldn't even be talking."
She didn't want to be harsh, but she needed to be clear. She continued, "Tell Hazel not to send Katelyn over anymore. I think she might have misunderstood something!"
Landon looked at her and slowly said, "She didn't misunderstand anything! Caitlyn, I do want to be with you! But I won't make things difficult for you."
Caitlyn had enough. "You should take Katelyn away!" she said.
Landon paused and asked, "Are you afraid Leonard will be unhappy?"
Caitlyn didn't dodge the question, "Yes!"
Landon's grip on the doorknob tightened a bit, but he just smiled calmly. "Okay, I'll take her away! I won't cause you any trouble."
With that, he opened the bedroom door. But instead of following him in, Caitlyn stayed in the living room, waiting.
Under the soft yellow light, she quietly waited for Landon to leave with Katelyn. She thought that after tonight, they'd have no more ties.
Even though she had made up her mind, her thoughts went wild. She couldn't help but wonder how different things would have been if Landon had said these things three years ago.
Back then, Caitlyn loved him deeply and wanted to marry him more than anything. But now, after all this time, what did those words even mean anymore?
Meanwhile, Landon walked into the bedroom.
The hazy light from outside spilled in. He looked at Katelyn lying on Caitlyn's bed, sleeping so peacefully.
He thought, 'Katelyn must really like Caitlyn.'
Otherwise, with Katelyn's temper, not even ten Hazels could have sent her over.
Landon knew his request was totally unfair to Caitlyn. Even if Leonard was unreliable, Caitlyn might not choose Landon. Landon had everything, but he had no right to love her. He could definitely crush Leonard, using every trick in the book to force her, but Landon didn't.
Landon thought he loved Caitlyn. He had hurt her so much before, so even though he wanted to be with her, he also wanted to give her a chance to be happy. But that chance belonged to another man—Leonard. Thinking of this, Landon smiled bitterly.
He picked up a small blanket beside him, wrapped Katelyn in it, and picked her up. Katelyn woke up and, seeing it was Landon, obediently lay on his shoulder, softly calling out "Daddy," clearly still half-asleep.
Landon patted her little head, gently saying, "Keep sleeping, Daddy's here!"
Hearing this, Katelyn closed her eyes. She seemed to fall asleep, but after a while, she mumbled in her sleep, "I want to sleep here. The blanket smells nice. Daddy, when will I have a mommy?"
Landon didn't answer. He just pressed his face against Katelyn's, ready to leave, but after taking two steps, he saw Eden at the door.
After all these years, Eden had scolded Caitlyn several times, but she had never had a conflict with Landon.
At this moment, Eden's face was twisted with anger. She turned to Caitlyn and said, "Watch Katelyn for a while; I need to speak with Mr. Carter."
"Mom!" Caitlyn said softly, "It was just an accident! I don't usually have contact with him."
Eden grew agitated. "Can you honestly say he has no feelings for you? If he didn't care, would he have kept Hazel around all those years ago? And now Hazel has even sent Katelyn over? Caitlyn, don't be foolish. He's just taking advantage of you, wanting you to be his child's stepmother! No matter who you marry, you cannot marry this old bastard and become Katelyn's stepmother. Have you forgotten how his wife tortured you? Katelyn is her child. Doesn't it make you uncomfortable to see her?" she said.
The past was like a wound, cruelly torn open.
Caitlyn's face turned pale, and she was too weak to even argue.
Landon felt a pang of heartache. He handed Katelyn to Caitlyn and then said to Eden, "Mrs. Robinson, let's have a conversation."
Eden sneered, "Mr. Carter, you're not young anymore; you should be about my age. How can you, at your age and with a child, shamelessly pursue Caitlyn? Don't you have any shame?"
