Chapter 304 Are You Taking Revenge on Me
In the heart of the city, there was a row of old-school buildings, all fancy and decked out.
Living here? Total status symbol. Perfect spot for Syeattel's elite to throw their exclusive shindigs.
These parties were not for the average Joe.
The Hughes family, Syeattel's new money, wanted to cozy up to the Hawkins family. But Laura wasn't into mingling, and Patrick was all about his grandson. So, they set their sights on Charlotte.
Even though Charlotte had split from Frederick, everyone knew Patrick still valued her highly.
Charlotte went home to change.
She slipped into a black dress, classy but with a hint of sexy.
At the party, Charlotte recognized most of the faces.
Unexpectedly, Melanie was there too.
Charlotte gave her a nod, grabbed a cocktail, and started mingling with the crowd.
She was feeling pretty good.
After the divorce, juggling two kids was no joke. This was a rare chill moment.
Outside, a black Cullinan was parked, and Frederick was leaning against it, smoking.
Dressed in black, he blended into the night. Only the occasional puff of smoke gave him away.
Around midnight, Frederick stubbed out his cigarette and headed inside. The guard knew him and let him in without a fuss.
Inside, it was all glitz and glam.
Celebs, models, socialites chatting away; violinists playing in the background.
The vibe was on point!
Frederick, coming from money, was no stranger to these parties. But seeing Charlotte there? That ticked him off.
She was lounging on a deep red sofa, playing poker with a few folks.
Next to her was a hotshot celeb.
A star that regular girls idolized was now looking at his ex-wife like she was the queen.
Charlotte won the game.
She leaned back, grinning.
The young celeb handed her a glass of champagne, and she took it like it was no big deal.
Frederick, in his black getup, looked even darker.
So, this was her life now? He always thought Charlotte's world revolved around him, even after the divorce.
After they split, she was all about the kids.
But clearly, guys were into her looks and charm.
Someone noticed Frederick. "Mr. Hawkins, here to join the fun?"
Charlotte looked up, locking eyes with him.
She was a bit taken aback, not expecting him.
Frederick shrugged off his black coat, tossed it on the sofa, and sat across from Charlotte.
He lit a cigarette and said, "Ms. Russell's got quite the lively private life!"
Everyone could tell Frederick was pissed, but a guy like him wouldn't pick a fight with a celeb, so he aimed his words at Charlotte.
Charlotte brushed her hair back, smiling faintly. "It's alright!"
If he wanted to stay and play, she wasn't stopping him. They were divorced, after all. Time to be cool about it.
They played a few more rounds.
Frederick's luck was so-so. Charlotte's was better. The male celeb would occasionally give her tips. It wasn't super flirty, but he didn't shy away from Frederick either.
Only now did Frederick really get it.
Charlotte had really cut ties with him, for good.
The bit of nostalgia and reluctance she showed was for "Frederick."
Her usual interactions with him were for the kids.
She actually had no lingering feelings for him!
Before this, he thought they could patch things up, but now it seemed it was just his wishful thinking!
Frederick could have dragged her away, but they were both people of status and couldn't let others see them as a joke.
They played until one in the morning before Charlotte showed any intention of leaving.
Jared's car wasn't there.
Charlotte lightly pulled her coat, watching Frederick drive the car over. She didn't refuse to get in.
She thought he would definitely have something to say tonight.
He would definitely get angry!
Even though Frederick was angry, he still leaned over to open the car door for her, his tone slightly cold. "Get in!"
Charlotte sat in the passenger seat. She slowly fastened her seatbelt, asking nonchalantly, "Why did you come here?"
Frederick lightly pressed the gas pedal. He didn't drive the car back to her villa but headed straight to the riverside.
The car suddenly stopped.
Frederick gripped the steering wheel, looking at the darkness ahead, restraining his emotions as he asked, "Charlotte, are you trying to get back at me?"
Charlotte didn't respond.
He slowly turned, his eyes a bit red. "I never betrayed our marriage!"
Charlotte opened the car door and got out.
Outside, it was pitch black, with only the river reflecting a faint white.
It was very cold at night, but Charlotte wanted to take a walk, at least to clear her head.
Frederick remained seated, watching her back.
Suddenly, he got out of the car, grabbed her arm from behind, and gently pulled her into his embrace. "I've never seen anyone as troublesome as you!"
His lips touched her hair, his voice hoarse. "Charlotte, don't go to such places again! If you want to have fun, I'll go with you!"
He couldn't stand her being admired by others.
Charlotte gently pushed him away.
The night wind blew her hair into a mess, but she didn't care. She stood facing him and said softly, "Frederick, it's not all about love with us.. I just don't want to live a life of constant torment anymore! I'm serious. I had a great time tonight!"
His gaze at her was somewhat unfamiliar.
Charlotte turned to look at the river. "I know what you mean! You want to start over with me, but Frederick, I'm not a girl in my twenties anymore. We divorced with two children. For the sake of the children, we have to interact, but we shouldn't interfere in each other's private lives."
Frederick's hands were in his pockets.
Inside was a diamond ring he had intended to give her.
His voice was very soft. "What if I need you to make a final choice?"
Charlotte didn't answer.
Silence was the most cruel answer.
After a long time, Frederick smiled faintly. "It turns out I've been overly affectionate lately! It's late; let me take you back!"
On the way back, he opened the back door for her, gracefully and properly.
They didn't talk on the way, only discussing the children briefly when she got out of the car.
Charlotte knew they were truly over!
She stood in the night wind, watching him drive away.
After that, he no longer pestered her.
Even when they met outside, he would just nod. They were like other divorced couples, polite and respectful, with nothing more than the children between them.
