Chapter 628 Mr. Hawkins, Happy New Year!

Caitlyn instantly regretted asking. But to her surprise, Amara didn't get mad. She just said calmly, "No matter how good my cooking is, it can't beat the Hawkins Family's chef."

Caitlyn stayed quiet but didn't back down. "So, you're saying you're just that charming."

Amara paused her chopping for a second and laughed at herself. "Maybe he overestimated me back then! Anyway, that's all ancient history now."

Caitlyn picked at her favorite fruits with a toothpick, leaning over the back of the couch. "But you guys have a kid together! As long as you have a kid, your relationship can't be completely over. If Kingsley ever comes to see Jesse and it happens to be raining, let him stay over. After he takes a shower, make your move. I don't believe a guy in his thirties like Kingsley can resist. Once you sleep together, he'll have to take responsibility."

Amara kept smiling faintly. "You've got a lot of ideas."

Caitlyn got excited. "Of course! When I was with Landon, he was something else! He had women coming and going all the time, never the same one in a week."

"And you still liked him so much!"

"He was generous and willing to spend money!"

"You don't lack money, do you?"

Caitlyn got annoyed. She snorted, "If you needed money, why didn't you go for Kingsley? I bet if you said a few words of apology, Kingsley would still be willing to put down his pride for you. Young rich guys like him value their dignity."

Amara kept chopping vegetables.

After Kingsley secured the Ascend Global Group deal, there was no chance for their relationship to improve.

At that time, she went to the Hawkins Group and told him that after helping Landon, she would leave the Carter Group. But Kingsley didn't accept it. That was when she knew he was serious. A multi-billion dollar deal was no joke!

Amara stayed silent.

Caitlyn shouted again, "Amara, you're not really giving up on Kingsley to be with Landon, are you? Landon won't marry you. Following him will only get you some money, nothing else."

Amara shot back, "Is that your personal experience talking?"

Caitlyn got mad.

She crunched on her chips, gritting her teeth. "Amara, don't mock me! You only get mad at me, but in front of Kingsley, you act like a little puppy, all pure and cute."

Amara brought over a plate of hand-cut lamb, perfectly seasoned.

Caitlyn took a bite. "Delicious!"

Amara smiled faintly. "In front of him, I'm neither pure nor cute! Forget it, let's not talk about him. I'll finish cooking; dinner will be ready in half an hour."

Caitlyn ate to her heart's content.

In half an hour, Amara had whipped up several dishes, both meat and veggies, and they were all fantastic.

Amara pulled out a bottle of wine. "It's cold; let's have a little."

Caitlyn's eyes widened. "That bottle costs ten grand. Amara, aren't you being a bit too extravagant?"

Amara gently touched the bottle, smiling faintly. "It's a gift from the winery Mr. Carter often orders from, only two bottles in total."

Caitlyn gave her a look. "Amara, are you treating Landon like your personal ATM?"

Amara didn't hide it. "I've gained quite a few perks from being around Mr. Carter."

"You're greedy!" Caitlyn complained while pouring herself a drink, downing half a glass in one go.

Amara stopped her. "That's not how you drink this wine."

Caitlyn shrugged. "Anyway, I'm crashing at your place tonight! I know you're just as lonely and cold as I am. You were much cuter before, chasing after Kingsley even when he didn't want you. Back then, you had nothing, but you were so brave. Now, you're not cute at all!"

Amara's expression stayed calm as she sipped from her half-filled glass, careful not to get drunk.

Caitlyn was different; she was determined to stay with Amara and got herself drunk before midnight, lying on the table and mumbling Landon's name.

Amara looked at the drunken Caitlyn.

Clearly, Caitlyn hadn't let go of her feelings for Landon!

She went to the bathroom to get a towel, half-squatting to wipe Caitlyn's forehead.

Caitlyn grabbed her hand.

Caitlyn opened her eyes, her flushed face full of drunkenness, and mumbled, "What are you doing here? I'm getting married. I don't need your concern. Our relationship is over, from now on we're strangers."

Amara felt helpless.

She coaxed Caitlyn a bit, trying to get her to the bedroom. Amara thought Caitlyn would settle down once she fell asleep, but Caitlyn was very restless, clawing at the table and demanding more to drink.

Just when Amara was at her wit's end, Landon called.

Caitlyn fumbled for a long time but couldn't find her phone. She started to fuss. "Amara, it's Landon calling me. Answer it and see what he says. Is he crying and begging me not to get engaged? Is he regretting it? Does he want me to be his wife but just can't apologize? Amara, ask him for me."

As Caitlyn spoke, she started to cry.

Amara felt bad too.

She gently patted Caitlyn's back and answered the phone. "Mr. Carter."

Landon was stunned and looked at his phone again. He had indeed called Caitlyn's number.

Amara said softly, "Caitlyn is at my place, she's drunk and a bit rowdy right now."

Landon was silent for a moment on the other end.

When he spoke again, his voice was a bit hoarse, "I'll be there in half an hour. Please take care of her for me, Amara. Sorry for the trouble."

He knew Caitlyn's temper and could tell she still had feelings for him. But he wasn't the right guy for her.

Amara was pretty surprised.

She didn't expect Landon to be in Syeattel. After a moment of shock, she said, "Alright! Happy New Year, Mr. Carter." Then she hung up the phone.

On the other end, Landon put down his phone.

He was standing in front of the villa he had given Caitlyn. Coming to Syeattel was a spur-of-the-moment decision; he just wanted to see if Caitlyn was doing well, and maybe give her a New Year's gift.

That way, they could completely sever their ties.

But clearly, Caitlyn hadn't moved on from that relationship, even though she had pretended not to care before.

Landon leaned against the car door and smoked a cigarette before getting in. He wasn't in a good mood as he drove; he hoped Caitlyn would find a good match. She was beautiful and kind-hearted, and it would be a pity for her to stay with him.

Half an hour later, he arrived at Amara's place.

Amara opened the door for him and stepped aside to let him in. "Mr. Carter."

Landon knew what she wanted to say.

He walked over to the sofa and sat next to Caitlyn, gently touching her forehead.

Caitlyn woke up. She looked at him for a long time before hoarsely saying, "Why are you here? Weren't you supposed to go back and fight for your inheritance? Didn't you tell me to find someone to marry? Landon, I've done everything you said, so why won't you let me go? Why do you still appear in my dreams?"

Landon's Adam's apple bobbed.

He spoke gently, "I'm taking you home; you need a good night's sleep."

Caitlyn refused to go.

As she slowly sobered up, she leaned her head against the back of the sofa, her eyes filled with sadness. "Take me home? To the old villa? Landon, I don't have much feeling for that person, but I won't betray him. We're getting engaged soon, and if all goes well, we'll be married by the end of next year! You don't love me, so why did you come to Syeattel on New Year's Eve? Why did you call me? Do you want me to keep struggling? Are you deliberately making it hard for me? Landon, you're such a bastard!"

As she spoke, she hit him a few times in frustration.

Landon let her hit him. He took a gift box out of his coat pocket and said, "I just wanted to see you. Happy New Year, Caitlyn."

Caitlyn stared blankly at the gift box. She wept, clutching it tightly to her chest. After all, she had been with Landon for over two years; how could she not be sad?

Amara stepped away from them and onto the small balcony of the bedroom, looking outside.

It was close to midnight, and fireworks were constantly blooming in the distant night sky, with the sound of fireworks everywhere.

It was lively outside!

At this time, people were probably wishing each other a Happy New Year, but Amara was alone. Her only relative, Jesse, was at the Hawkins Mansion.

She thought that maybe she should look at some documents later!

That way, she wouldn't be too bored.

As she was thinking, her phone rang on the bed.

Amara wrapped her scarf tighter and went back to the bedroom to get her phone. She thought it was a call from Hailey, but it was from Kingsley.

With the New Year approaching, Kingsley's voice seemed to carry a chill. "Jesse wants his little pillow to sleep. I'm downstairs; bring it down."

Amara was stunned for a moment.

She walked out of the bedroom and headed to the living room balcony. When she looked down, she saw Kingsley's car parked below. He was leaning against the car, holding his phone, and even from a distance, she could tell he didn't look happy.

To his left was Landon's car.

Amara didn't know what to say for a moment. She struggled to speak, "Kingsley, Mr. Carter..."

Kingsley's tone was icy. "Ms. Butler, you're single. Who you date is your business; you don't need to report to me! Besides Jesse, what else is there between us? The two nights a month ago were just a fling. Why is Ms. Butler still hung up on it?"

His words were harsh.

Amara didn't want to explain anymore. She said softly, "I'll bring it down right away."

She hung up the phone, grabbed Jesse's favorite little pillow, changed her shoes, and went out.

The night wind was fierce.

Kingsley was leaning against a black Range Rover, smoking. His black coat blended into the night.

Amara walked up to him.

To avoid disturbing Jesse, she explained, "I'm not with Mr. Carter. Caitlyn is at my place."

Kingsley didn't want to hear her explanation.

He took the pillow from her and said indifferently, "No need to explain to me because I don't care! Amara, I won't interfere in your personal life. Who you're with or why you went to Bostan and Lumina Bay City has nothing to do with me. We're just exes."

Amara lowered her eyes and smiled faintly.

After a while, she said softly, "Happy New Year, Mr. Hawkins."

Kingsley stared at her. After about half a minute, he opened the car door and got in. The black Range Rover made a turn in front of her and quickly disappeared into the night.

Amara stood there for a while.

She didn't go upstairs immediately. She wanted to give Landon and Caitlyn some privacy, so she sat in the community's corridor for a while, where wisteria was planted all around.

When she and Kingsley were still together, he had told her that the wisteria at his granduncle's house in Copenhagen bloomed the best.

He had also said he would take her to see it.

Amara gently touched the withered branches and couldn't help but think that she probably wouldn't get to see it in this lifetime.
