Chapter 843 Just Like That, She Walked Back into Grant's World 1
It had been a week since they last saw each other.
Even though they lived together, they managed to avoid each other. She didn't want to see him, and he didn't want to upset her.
Over the past few months, their relationship had grown distant.
Grant pushed open the door to the master bedroom.
Nancy was reading a book in the bedroom.
Ever since she was four months pregnant, she hadn't been feeling well and had stopped working. Grant figured she would probably quit her job to focus on raising their child.
The sound of footsteps startled Nancy.
She turned slightly and saw her husband, Grant.
She was a bit surprised. Why was he home at noon?
Nancy thought darkly, 'Has he gotten himself into another scandal that requires the nominal 'Mrs. McCall' to play along?'
Grant had no idea what she was thinking.
He knelt down to look at her, then took the book from her hands and glanced at it.
It was a parenting manual.
She had given up on him, but she cared about the baby.
Grant reached out and gently touched her belly.
Nancy sat with her back to the light, her voice hoarse as she spoke, "Why are you back?"
Grant replied softly, "I suddenly wanted to come home and have lunch with you."
Nancy responded, "Did you run into someone?"
They didn't love each other, but they were still married. Nancy guessed correctly...
Grant didn't hide it from her. He knelt down and pressed his face against her belly, his voice low and soft, "I ran into Haven."
At that moment, he seemed so fragile, as if he had been through a lot.
Nancy remembered that when Jade jumped off the building at their wedding, he hadn't been this devastated. This must be very important to him.
She hesitated for a moment, then gently stroked his hair.
Grant wasn't young anymore.
He was busy with business and social engagements, and a few gray hairs had appeared.
Nancy wasn't as cold as usual.
Because she was going to be a mother, just thinking about the baby made her expression soften. It was a lovely child, bringing joy to her heart.
She asked softly, "Did she call you Dad?"
Grant's body stiffened slightly.
Nancy knew she had guessed right and felt a pang of sadness... for Grant.
She thought, if it weren't for the unrequited love of his youth, he wouldn't have done such absurd things.
If she had to say she hated him, she really couldn't. But their feelings had indeed faded over time.
After a long while, Grant said, "She did."
He gently hugged Nancy, pressing against her swollen belly, feeling the baby.
He told her, "Nancy, in three and a half months, we'll have a child."
Nancy said yes.
Her voice was soft and gentle, just like his...
This was probably the first time since their marriage that they had interacted so peacefully, without sharp words or hostility.
Later, he kissed her...
At first, Nancy resisted, saying it might hurt the baby.
Grant really wanted to kiss her.
He sat beside her, holding her as he kissed her gently... patiently waiting for her to be willing.
After the kiss, Nancy said softly, "Let's have lunch."
Grant wasn't actually hungry.
He wanted to take a nap with Nancy, lying side by side, so he could touch her belly anytime... maybe feel the baby move.
But Nancy needed to eat, so in the end, he wiped his face and went downstairs with her.
The housekeeper noticed their softened expressions, clearly indicating a reconciliation, and was happy for them, making several playful comments while setting the table.
Nancy, who rarely smiled, gave a faint smile.
Grant watched her.
After a while, he smiled slightly, "You look beautiful when you smile. You should smile more. The baby will smile too when they're born."
They chatted casually while eating.
Grant brought up the baby's gender and name. Nancy paused and said, "We didn't specifically check the gender, but I feel like it's a boy."
Grant served her some soup and said, "If it's a boy, let's name him Bingo McCall!"
Nancy lowered her eyes, "Why not name him Chuckles McCall? Keep that great name for yourself!"
Grant laughed, "How about Lance McCall? Does that work?"
Nancy still felt he was being casual, like he just came up with a name on the spot. She wasn't happy and didn't leave him any space for the nap.
But Grant took off his shoes and squeezed into a small space beside her.
Just to be close to her.
Nancy wasn't heartless. She could feel his attempts to make amends.
She didn't plan to love him.
But if Grant wanted to be a good father and set an example for their child, she wouldn't refuse...
She also wanted the child to grow up in a loving environment.
She moved a little to make room for him.
This made Grant smile lightly. He held her head, looking at her face-to-face... like a young couple cooling off together in the summer.
His gaze was so intense.
Nancy couldn't stand it. She closed her eyes lightly, "I need to sleep."
Grant pressed a gentle kiss on her lips.
Nancy's brow furrowed slightly.
But she didn't want to open her eyes, didn't want to face him, or rather, she didn't know how to face this Grant, because they had been distant for so long...
Nancy, being pregnant, slept a lot.
Grant's company still had matters to attend to, and his secretary called twice, but he turned them down.
The third call was urgent, concerning Jade.
Jade had slit her wrists in the hospital.
Because Grant refused to see her, after causing a scene and exhausting herself, no one believed her threats...
But during the time it took to have a meal, Jade was found lying in a pool of blood.
During the rescue, she kept calling Grant's name.
Her condition was critical, and the doctors said she might not make it.
If Jade died, it would be big news, and Granatal Nexus Technologies Group would face a significant impact.
Even if Nancy, heavily pregnant, tried to explain, it probably wouldn't help much.
After the call, Grant's throat tightened, and he made a decision within seconds.
He had to go to the hospital.
Whether for business or other reasons, he had to go.
As he put on his shoes, he noticed Nancy was awake.
Their eyes met, but they didn't speak.
Nancy's gaze was complicated; she had clearly heard the secretary's call and knew where he was going.
Grant didn't try to hide it from her. He gently touched her face, his voice hoarse, "There's an emergency at the hospital. I have to go."
Nancy didn't respond.
Grant touched her belly again, his voice even raspier, "I won't let you go this time."
As he left, Nancy wanted to grab his arm.
But Grant moved quickly, and she missed.
At the door, he said to her, "I'll be back soon... In a few days, there's a rare full moon and a meteor shower. Let's set up a table in the yard and watch the stars."
Nancy heard the tenderness in his words, the Grant she couldn't refuse.
But she didn't respond.
It wasn't until Grant left that she softly said okay.
The situation at the hospital was worse than anyone imagined. By the time Grant arrived, Jade had already passed away.
She left a letter for Grant, asking if he had ever loved her.
So many girls only know how to love others, not themselves.
Just like Jade.
In the empty hallway, Grant held the letter, letting the cameras capture his disheveled state.
People thought he loved Jade and was mourning her loss.
But only he knew.
He regretted it.
He regretted getting involved with Jade.
If he hadn't entangled with her, she would still be alive, maybe married to a company employee, living a decent life.
But Jade was dead... She died because of Grant's desires, because he couldn't let go of the past.
He had so much, he already had Nancy, but he still couldn't let go of the past... still did things he shouldn't have.
The newspapers began to criticize Grant.
Granatal Nexus Technologies Group's stock kept plummeting...
Employees resigned, partners left him, and it seemed like everyone abandoned Grant overnight, leaving him with nothing...
It seemed like everything he had worked for was about to disappear.
Nancy's father, Royce, called him, telling him to divorce Nancy.
Royce said he would make Nancy terminate the pregnancy.
Grant's voice was hoarse, "The baby is six months old. How can you terminate it? Besides, Nancy wouldn't agree."
Royce said coldly, "I'll convince her!"
Late at night, Grant sat in the company lobby, the dim space empty.
Nancy came to him at that moment.
She was six months pregnant, and the early autumn night was a bit chilly.
She wore a shawl over her dress, and just like that, she gently walked back into his world.
