Chapter 384 Frederick Headed to Copenhegan
The next day, Frederick jetted off to Copenhegan.
Charlotte? Clueless as ever.
The private jet touched down at ten, and by noon, Frederick was knocking on the Devereux family's door. The butler, looking all kinds of shocked, rushed to the hall, "Ms. Bennett, Frederick's here."
Adeline nearly jumped out of her skin. "Frederick? Again?"
She shot back, "Why's he here?"
Adeline had every reason to be on edge.
Andrew had hooked up with his sister and even had a kid with her. No wonder the Hawkins family was pissed. She was worried Frederick was here to throw down with Andrew again.
The butler scratched his head, "He doesn't look too happy!"
Adeline's stomach did a flip.
Just then, Frederick walked in and respectfully said, "Grandma."
Adeline was thrown for a loop.
What was up with him today? She wanted to ask, but Frederick gently steered her inside, whispering, "I need to talk to you in private."
Adeline felt a bit of relief.
Frederick gave a faint smile.
Once they were in Adeline's little courtyard, away from prying eyes, Frederick pulled out a photo from his pocket and placed it gently in front of her.
Adeline put on her reading glasses to get a better look. "This is an old photo of mine! How did you get this?"
When she flipped it over, her face changed.
A mix of sadness, pain, and a touch of nostalgia washed over her.
Her voice trembled, "Frederick, I know this handwriting."
Tears welled up in her eyes.
Frederick's voice was low. "A astrologer asked me to give this to you. He said his biggest regret was not being able to say sorry to you."
Adeline gently stroked the photo and sighed. "Why did he have to! Frederick, is he okay?"
Frederick was quiet for a couple of seconds.
Adeline knew the answer wasn't good.
Sure enough, Frederick placed his hand over hers and said softly, "He passed away. You were the last person on his mind."
He was gone.
Adeline was stunned, but she didn't cry. She just gently traced the words on the photo.
Back in the day, they were a perfect match, but their families had beef. His family didn't approve and said some nasty things. She was stubborn and married into the Devereux family six months later.
He ran away from home.
The room was silent, and Adeline didn't cry or make a scene.
But Frederick knew she was hurting inside.
He softly talked about the astrologer's connection to the Hawkins family.
With the passing of an old friend, Adeline sat alone for half the day.
Frederick stayed with her the whole time.
By evening, when Andrew got home and heard from the servants that Frederick was there, he was surprised.
The servant mentioned that Adeline was feeling down and that Frederick was keeping her company, which surprised him even more. So, without even washing his face, he headed straight to the small courtyard.
The bedroom door was locked.
Andrew knocked gently and said softly, "Mom, why are you locking yourself in?"
The door opened.
It was Frederick who came out, closing the door behind him, and said softly, "Andrew, let Adeline be alone for a while."
Andrew felt pretty upset.
After taking a few steps, he couldn't help but ask, "What happened to her?"
Frederick was silent for a few seconds. "An old friend of hers passed away."
Andrew was suspicious.
After a while, he roughly guessed who it might be. After all, both families were big deals back then, and the whole thing had caused quite a stir.
Frederick had planned to rush back to Syeattel that night.
He was thinking about Charlotte and the kids.
But since he rarely visited, Andrew asked him to stay the night. "Adeline is feeling down, and having another person at home is always better. Besides, she cares about you a lot!"
Frederick agreed.
Andrew cooked dinner himself.
Frederick was chilling in the small courtyard, dialing up Charlotte to let her know what was up.
Charlotte picked up.
Her voice was all soft and sweet. "Dinner's ready. You coming back to eat?"
Frederick loosened his coat and whispered, "You and the kids go ahead and eat! I'm on a business trip and might not make it back. If you can't sleep tonight, bring Lola into bed with you. She loves to cuddle."
When he mentioned the business trip, Charlotte showed no shred of doubt. She just told him to take care of himself.
Hearing her soft voice, Frederick felt a pang of longing and couldn't help but say, "Charlotte, it's only been a day, and I already miss you."
"I miss you too."
Frederick's heart did a little flip, and he was about to say more.
But then, Andrew's voice cut in, sounding a bit annoyed. "You see each other every day, and you can't handle one night apart?"
Frederick hung up and grinned.
He and Andrew had a few drinks and shot the breeze.
Frederick took off his coat, showing off a black turtleneck sweater. After a few drinks, his face had a slight flush.
He looked pretty damn good.
With the booze loosening him up, he casually asked, "Andrew, when are you gonna give Chloe and Gavin a proper home?"
Andrew held his wine glass and gave a bitter smile.
He felt like he'd let Chloe down, with promises delayed over and over. Luckily, things were calm now.
Maybe because of her modesty, Chloe wasn't pushing as much as before.
And he had to be busy until the New Year before he could handle personal stuff.
"Maybe after this New Year," Andrew said softly, staring at his glass.
Andrew's clear statement made Frederick happy.
He poured Andrew another drink.
The two of them had a good chat.
Late at night, Frederick crashed in Charlotte's room, while Andrew went to Adeline's small courtyard. Adeline was too sad to eat much, so Andrew made her some food.
"Mom, have something to eat!"
Andrew's voice was gentle. "If you want to visit him, I'll go with you."
Adeline waved her hand.
She looked at the bright moon outside the window and whispered, "He knew the outcome but still did it. He must have truly found peace! Andrew, I won't disturb him."
Andrew nodded. "That's probably for the best."
Being a good son, he spent the night on the sofa in Adeline's bedroom.
Early in the morning, Frederick was ready to bounce.
Andrew asked him to take some stuff for Chloe and Gavin.
When Frederick got home, it was almost noon.
There were guests at home, Oliver's sister Sophie, who was also Brian's wife.
Frederick took a few more glances at Sophie. She was simple and a bit scared of him.
She didn't stick around long and left quickly.
Watching the white sports car drive away, Frederick unbuttoned his coat and pretended to be puzzled. "She seems pretty scared of me!"
Charlotte glanced at him.
With his looks, and Sophie being so honest and straightforward, how could she not be scared?
Frederick wasn't in a rush to hit the office.
He pulled Charlotte onto his lap and asked her gently, "Did Sophie come over for something?"
Charlotte nodded.
"She brought tickets from Brian. He has a race next weekend."
Frederick smiled. "He's almost 30 and still racing! Sophie seems to spoil him quite a bit."
Charlotte gently stroked his handsome face. "Are you jealous? I spoil you too. When you had amnesia, I even let you become a lawyer!"
Speaking of this, Charlotte got serious, "Frederick, I know you prefer being a lawyer. After I have this baby..."
Frederick didn't let her finish.
He said softly, "I want to be your husband more."
As a man, being able to provide the best life for his wife and kids was the best.
Before meeting Charlotte, his dream was to practice law, but now his whole life's goal was Charlotte and the kids.
Besides, conquering the business world also brought him great satisfaction.
