Chapter 403 I Only Tease You
Chloe was kinda taken aback.
Even though the Devereux family had a ton of servants to pamper her, she'd been jonesing for sandwiches from this breakfast joint for years. Especially when she was preggo with Gavin, she craved them like crazy.
Back then, she'd often bawl her eyes out thinking about Andrew and curse him for being a cold-hearted jerk.
Chloe's eyes lit up with joy, but she played it cool.
She peeked her hand out from under the covers and asked softly, "Did you actually go and get it?"
Andrew just hummed in response.
Then he gave her a light pat on the head. "At least brush your teeth and wash your face before you chow down!"
He was such a neat freak.
Chloe was usually pretty chill, but she didn't want him thinking she was a slob, so she thought about getting up.
As soon as she stuck one leg out, she regretted it.
Her voice was all soft and sweet. "Andrew, can you grab me some clothes?"
Andrew didn't budge, his gaze kinda intense.
She couldn't help but blush and urged, "Hurry up!"
Andrew leaned down and kissed her, his voice a bit husky. "Wear my shirt."
Then he went to the closet and brought her a white shirt. Chloe took it, and it still smelled fresh from the laundry. She slipped it on and casually pulled her long hair out from the collar.
When she looked up, she caught Andrew staring.
Her face got all hot, and she dashed into the bathroom.
When she came out, Andrew had already set the breakfast on the round dining table in the living room, and a servant had brought another breakfast, probably his fave.
Chloe bit into the sandwich.
With one bite, the flavor explosion hit her taste buds.
After munching on half the sandwich, she looked up at the man.
Andrew was sipping coffee and reading the morning paper.
Chloe sipped her milk and said kinda delicately, "At your age, shouldn't you be focusing on health? Why do you drink coffee in the morning like Frederick?"
Andrew put down the newspaper, his gaze lingering on her for a moment.
Then he chuckled. "What age am I?"
Chloe realized he was up to no good and didn't dare provoke him further, so she quietly drank her milk.
Andrew had almost finished eating.
He said gently, "If you wanna sleep, go ahead. Gavin's being looked after by Adeline; she's probably taken him to the supermarket to buy groceries. Adeline loves to show off her grandson."
Chloe felt uneasy. "Isn't that kinda inappropriate?"
"What's inappropriate about it?" Andrew laughed. "I like to spoil you!"
Thinking about last night's events, he couldn't help but kiss her again as he got up, then whispered, "I'll come back to have lunch with you!"
Chloe definitely wanted him to come back.
But she hadn't forgotten how busy he was, so she wrapped her arms around his neck and whispered, "Adeline's with me; you can rest at the office at noon, and we'll have dinner together in the evening."
"That works too!" Andrew held her slender waist.
It was rare for them to be together, and just a touch ignited the spark. He rubbed his nose against hers and said with some difficulty, "I really wanna take a few days off and have some fun."
Chloe blushed and her heart raced.
She fiddled with his shirt buttons and whispered, "Isn't there a holiday approaching?"
Andrew chuckled softly.
He said, "Yeah! We'll have a blast then!"
Despite the deep affection, he still had to go to work, so he left.
Outside, Nathan was already chillin' by the car. When he saw Andrew step out, he couldn't help but say, "You look like a million bucks today."
Andrew slid into the car.
He adjusted his tie and asked, "Do I?"
Nathan grinned. "Totally! You look like you're on cloud nine!"
Andrew shot him a glance.
He was feeling pretty damn good, both inside and out.
When he got to the office, everyone already knew he had brought his girl and kid home. Seeing Andrew in such a good mood, they started teasing him about treating them to a meal.
Nathan laughed and scolded, "You guys got some nerve, joking with Mr. Devereux?"
But Andrew just waved it off, not bothered at all.
He told his team, "Do your work well! After work, let Nathan give you some cash to blow."
The team, with their sweet talk, showered him with compliments.
Andrew took Nathan into his office.
The young engineers and clerical staff huddled together, laughing and gossiping.
"I heard Mr. Devereux's girlfriend is a model."
"Mr. Devereux dating a model? No way!"
"She's from a rich family in Syeattel. She joined the entertainment biz just for kicks. If she wasn't top-notch, do you think Mr. Devereux would settle down at this age?"
Their chatter was in full swing when they suddenly went silent.
Someone whispered, "Celeste!"
Celeste had shown up, and everyone knew about her special history with Andrew; they were each other's first love.
Now they were worried she might overhear them.
After all, Celeste had lost half of her hand and was probably super self-conscious.
Celeste did hear them.
But she pretended not to and still smiled. "Why are you all gathered here? If Mr. Devereux sees you, he'll chew you out."
The group scattered, and Celeste's smile vanished.
She raised her right hand.
Even though she had a prosthetic, she rarely used it.
Andrew, probably out of old feelings, didn't completely cut her off, leaving her with a position. But she no longer had access to confidential stuff and had lost her edge.
Celeste stood there for a moment.
She slowly got into the elevator and headed to Andrew's office on the 8th floor.
Andrew was about to start a meeting.
Seeing her come in, he asked coolly, "Celeste, what's up?"
Today, Celeste was dressed in a silk blouse and coat, paired with leather boots, looking all elegant.
Her necklace was a classic Dior pearl, really pretty.
But Andrew didn't give a damn.
Celeste forced a smile. "I heard downstairs that Miss Hawkins is in Copenhegan. You must be stoked!"
In recent years, Andrew had treated her like she was invisible.
Only when Chloe was mentioned did he show any reaction.
Andrew gestured for Nathan to leave first. After the door closed, he lit a cigarette, took a drag, and his gaze hardened. "Celeste, I didn't let you off back then just because of our past, but also because Chloe was unharmed. I thought losing a hand would make you understand."
Celeste said, "Andrew, are you really this cold?" After all, they had been together.
But all he saw was Chloe.
She had lost her hand!
Andrew took a deep drag on his cigarette, put it out, and then pulled up Celeste's file.
He looked at her seriously and said, "Celeste, you're not cut out to work here anymore! I'll issue a transfer to a subsidiary, where the treatment won't be worse than here. I think you'll be happier in a new environment."
He transferred her to Lumina Bay City.
Celeste took a deep breath. "Just because she's here, I have to make way, right? Andrew, you won't even let me stay in Copenhegan."
Andrew said calmly, "It's for the best for both of us."
He had made his decision, and she couldn't change it.
When Celeste took the transfer order and left, Nathan was standing at the door. Seeing her unhappy face, he habitually asked a question.
Celeste didn't even look at him.
Nathan was puzzled when Andrew walked out.
Dealing with women was always a hassle.
Without Andrew saying anything, Nathan could guess what had happened and smiled faintly. "Celeste will come around eventually."
Andrew paused and said softly, "Nathan, you know, my biggest regret is having too many flings before I met Chloe. If I had known I would want to be with her so much one day, I would have waited for her wholeheartedly."
For someone like him, physical needs weren't that important.
Those people were just to pass the time. He didn't care much about them.
But he knew Chloe would care; no woman wouldn't.
Nathan offered some words of comfort.
In the afternoon, Celeste packed her things and left the building, soon heading to Lumina Bay City.
Her colleagues were surprised but guessed it was Andrew's doing, and from then on, they didn't dare mention her again.
Andrew was busy all day.
Before leaving work, he called Chloe, "What are you up to?"
On the other end, Chloe had just finished her tasks.
She had been helping Adeline prepare some ingredients, mostly for the holiday family party. There were several boxes of vegetables that she particularly liked, and she had asked Adeline to send one to Syeattel.
Her back was sore, and just then, Andrew's call came.
She pretended to complain, "Housework is exhausting!"
Andrew guessed she couldn't stay idle and was helping Adeline, so he teased her, "More tiring than last night? But then again, you didn't put in much effort last night!"
Chloe's face heated up.
Andrew unbuttoned his shirt collar and said gently, "I was thinking of asking you out, to go shopping, have dinner, watch a movie or something, but if you're tired, we can do it another day."
"I'm not tired," Chloe panicked and shouted. "I'm not tired at all!"
Andrew chuckled. "Not tired last night either?"
He was clearly flirting with her, and Chloe couldn't win against him.
She stammered.
Andrew, seeing he had teased her enough, softened his tone. "I'll send a driver to pick you up."
Chloe, feeling indignant, hummed before hanging up, "You're teasing me!"
Andrew's tone became even gentler.
He smiled. "I want to tease you tonight too; will you let me?"
Such a shameless question, she couldn't answer.
Chloe hung up the phone, her heart still racing, feeling a sense of unreality. Yes, she was living with Andrew, they could talk endlessly every day, and sleep in the same bed every night.
She felt like she could laugh even in her dreams.
But she pinched her own face. 'Be composed! Chloe, you're in your thirties; you can't be swayed by a few sweet words like a little girl!'
She decided to spend his money while shopping later!
When women went on dates, they always took it seriously.
Chloe loved looking good, so she carefully chose a shirt dress and a light-colored coat.
She looked radiant in them!
Adeline came back with Gavin and saw her.
She smiled. "Dating is good! Young people should date! It's okay if you don't come back tonight. I heard there are a few new hotels in Copenhegan; let Andrew take you to stay."
Chloe thought, 'Is Adeline really this chill?'
As they were chatting, the driver arrived, and to her surprise, Nathan came to pick her up personally.
He greeted Adeline.
Adeline handed him a box of vegetables.
Nathan grinned. "Thanks a lot. Then I'll have my wife whip up something with it tonight!"
Adeline laughed. "Don't work your wife too hard!"
Nathan exchanged a few more playful words and then invited Chloe into the car.
Chloe knew him well enough, but given their age difference, they didn't chat much.
Nathan took the initiative to say, "I've worked with Mr. Devereux for almost 20 years. Adeline treats me like half a son. Over a decade ago, when my wife was seriously ill, it was Adeline who helped me find a great doctor."
Chloe felt they had a good relationship.
She thought she would meet Andrew outside, but the car drove into the office building.
It was already six o'clock.
Most people had left work, but some were still around. Seeing Nathan with someone, they guessed it was Andrew's girlfriend.
They all thought Chloe was prettier than in the magazines.
She was super young, with great skin.
How did Andrew manage to win her over?
Andrew was still in his office reviewing documents, with an engineer standing in front of him. Andrew frowned. "Brady, this set of data needs more attention. We can't afford any mistakes. Time's running out for us men. Do you understand?"
Brady Watson, who was actually in his forties, blushed. "Yes, I'll work overtime tonight!"
Andrew stood up and patted his shoulder. "Do it tomorrow! Isn't it your daughter's birthday today? Leave early, buy her a cake, and celebrate properly. You haven't had much time for her these past years, have you?"
Brady was moved, his eyes glistening. "Yes! I'll leave right away!"
Andrew patted him again; they indeed worked hard.
As they were talking, Nathan brought Chloe in.
Seeing Brady, Nathan smiled. "Brady, you're here too!"
Brady, who had been doing technical work for years, mostly saw female colleagues who didn't care much about their appearance. Seeing a beautiful girl suddenly, his face turned red.
Nathan seemed to realize something. "I forgot to introduce her! But I'll let Mr. Devereux do it!"
Andrew's gaze was on Chloe.
She looked stunning today.
He took out two cigarettes, tossed one to the stunned Brady, and smiled. "Brady, this is my girl, Chloe."
Brady held the cigarette between his fingers and extended his other hand.
He was a bit awkward. "Nice to meet you!"
Chloe's face turned red.
How could Andrew call her his girl? She felt shy but happy.
She hesitated to extend her hand, and Brady thought his rough, dirty hand was the reason.
So he wiped it on his clothes.
Chloe quickly said, "Oh, sorry, I don't meat that!"
She extended her fair hand, which was then held by Brady, whose palm was sweaty.
Brady was an honest man, scratching his head. "Mr. Devereux's girlfriend is really beautiful!"
Chloe's face turned even redder.
Andrew tidied up his desk, stood up, and said, "Alright, let's not delay Brady's daughter's birthday. Everyone, let's call it a day!"
Chloe felt bad about not preparing a gift.
Brady waved it off. "No need!"
Andrew took out his wallet and pulled out about $5,000. "Buy your daughter a pretty dress."
Brady hesitated for a moment but eventually accepted it.
After he left, Andrew went back to work.
Chloe bit her lip and approached him. "You tricked me into coming here!"
