Chapter 780 Johnny, This Time Let's Make It Work

Lola lay quietly on the pillow, watching him as he approached the bed.

"Did you sleep well?" Johnny's voice was a bit rough.

Lola lifted her arm and gently picked up the rose, her voice low and raspy, "Where'd you get this?"

She figured he hadn't gone for a run, and the flower shops wouldn't be open this early.

Johnny sat on the edge of the bed and gently brushed her face with the back of his hand. There was a hint of playfulness in his affectionate gesture, and even though they had been married for years, Lola couldn't help but turn her face away.

Johnny withdrew his hand and smiled faintly. "I made a little garden in the backyard with some imported varieties. Haven't you checked it out after all this time?"

Lola let the rose slide gently down his left leg. "How would I know in the middle of winter?"

Johnny replied, "It's from the greenhouse. You can take a look later."

Lola gazed at him for a moment before softly asking, "Are you staying?"

Johnny looked back at her.

After a long pause, he took her restless hand, bent down, and kissed her, murmuring, "I'm staying."

They didn't talk much after that because Stella came running upstairs, wobbling as she went.

The maid, seeing both the master and mistress in the bedroom, felt awkward and left Stella there before heading back downstairs. Stella, seeing Johnny, opened her arms wide and ran over with a big smile.

She stumbled after a few steps.

Lola wanted to get out of bed to pick her up, but Johnny stopped her. "I'll get her," he said softly.

He bent down and picked Stella up with one arm.

Stella, finding it novel, opened her eyes wide with excitement.

Johnny sat on the edge of the bed, letting Stella stand on his right leg. At first, Lola was worried, but she soon realized Stella was being careful, so she relaxed.

After playing for a while, Johnny gently tapped Lola's nose. "Time to get up. The kids are all awake. You shouldn't stay in bed."

Lola didn't respond.

Her eyes were a bit teary. Johnny didn't ask why. He just placed Stella on the floor and gently lifted Lola's face, resting it on his leg.

Lola lay on his leg, feeling something warm trickle down.

She buried her face deeply, afraid of being seen crying.

Soon, her tears soaked his pants, leaving a wet spot. Johnny knew but said nothing, just stroked her hair, letting her vent.

After a long while, he finally said in a low, hoarse voice, "Lola, if you keep this up, I won't be able to hold back."

Lola blushed.

She pressed against his firm thigh and whispered, "Thinking about that so early in the morning? Stella's still here. You're such a perv."

Johnny glanced at Stella.

She was crawling on the floor, innocent and unaware.

He gently touched Lola's face and chuckled softly. "I haven't had sex in two years. If I can't do it, can't I at least think about it? Thinking isn't a crime, Ms. Hawkins."

Of course, it wasn't a crime. If he wanted to, she was willing.

But Johnny didn't want to rush. It wasn't that he didn't want to; he just didn't want to do it too soon.

He still felt guilty about what happened. If it weren't for his mistake, Lola wouldn't have to suffer. Besides, if only he felt pleasure, what was the point of making love?

He didn't share these thoughts with Lola.

He just gently patted her back, silently comforting her.

---

Lola didn't get up for breakfast, no matter how much Johnny called her. She seemed to revert to the girl who relied on Johnny, and in the end, Johnny gave her a few playful spanks.

By noon, the sun was shining brightly.

This rare family lunch was prepared by Johnny himself, with the two older kids helping out. As for Stella, Johnny took off her shoes and jacket and tucked her into bed with Lola for a nap.

In the kitchen, Johnny was cooking.

Even though he had been separated from Lola for years, his cooking skills hadn't diminished.

Angelina was quite normal, but Austin felt awkward. After crying so much yesterday, would Johnny look down on him?

So, the ten-year-old Austin kept sneaking glances at Johnny.

Johnny noticed that but pretended not to. He called Austin over to learn how to cook, naturally holding him in front. Austin was happy but tried to keep a serious face.

Occasionally, he would sneak a look back at Johnny.

Austin thought, 'Dad is really tall! Mom is tall too, but Dad always has to bend down to kiss her.'

Suddenly, Austin covered his face, 'Oh no, what am I thinking!'

Johnny pulled Austin's hands away. "Go upstairs and call your mom and sister down for lunch."

Austin was blushing andran off. Johnny chuckled and shook his head. A few steps away, Angelina was carefully picking vegetables for Stella. Stella needed to eat more veggies to help with her digestion.

Sunlight streamed into the kitchen, making it warm.

While frying fish, amidst the sizzling sound, Johnny casually said, "If anything happens, remember to tell Mom and Dad, okay?"

Angelina's nose turned red, and she bit her lip, softly calling, "Dad."

Johnny used his clean hand to pat her head, saying nothing more. Some things were better discussed between Lola and her.

What Johnny didn't expect was that Lola didn't talk to Angelina first. She talked to the school and the parents.

He didn't know what method she used, about twenty students had transferred out, within a day.

On Monday morning,

Johnny was on the phone constantly, with the school principal and parents pleading with him to talk to Lola.

Although Johnny thought it was a bit much, he wouldn't undermine Lola's authority in public. He calmly refused.

But it was still an issue.

After hanging up the last call, he dialed Lola's number. She answered almost immediately, sounding cheerful. "It's only ten in the morning, Mr. Flores. Are you so free? Is the company going bankrupt?"

Johnny laughed and cursed at her.

Then he asked about the kids. Lola was vague and told him not to worry.

She said she had a meeting.

When Johnny hung up, he felt a mix of annoyance and amusement. He knew Lola was doing it on purpose. He actually liked her temper, her carefree attitude.

On Monday morning, Johnny had many things to do but found himself daydreaming in his office.

Felicity came in to remind him of a meeting.

Johnny stood up, looking dazzling in the sunlight.

But Johnny couldn't stop thinking about Lola, so he left work early at three in the afternoon. Instead of going home, he went to Lola's law firm. It was busier than he had expected. When he arrived, Lola was meeting with two clients back-to-back.

It was an hour before she was free.

When she finally opened the door, Johnny was sitting on the couch, flipping through a magazine, dressed quite meticulously.

One might say overly meticulously.

Lola stood at the door, rolling a file into a tube, and chuckled lightly, "Mr. Flores, you're quite the catch today."

Johnny glanced at her and put down the magazine.

"All done?"

Lola walked in and closed the door behind her. "For now."

She poured herself a glass of water, her back to him, and pondered, "Did you come because of those parents and students? When I talked to them, they seemed quite willing to transfer. How did they end up complaining to you?"

Johnny stood up and walked over to her.

Worried she might burn herself, he took the cup from her hand and wrapped an arm around her waist, whispering into her neck, "It's not a big deal, Lola. Just a small lesson."

Lola was silent for a long time.

He thought she was angry and was about to comfort her. After all, it wasn't worth upsetting her over outsiders, especially since they had just reconciled. Johnny was very patient now, eager to make up for the past years.

Just then, Lola turned and gently hugged his waist.

They were perfectly matched in height, and it looked really nice when they hugged like that. Lola rested her face against his neck, her voice low, "Johnny, you're lying. If you didn't care at all, you wouldn't have wanted to smoke that day, and you wouldn't have pushed me away."

He remained silent.

Lola continued, "You still think I can find someone better. But Johnny, your leg isn't perfect, and I'm not whole either. Doesn't that make us a perfect match now?"

He wanted to say no, that she wasn't like that with others.

Her slender fingers gently touched his lips.

It was the same. If she could accept someone else, they wouldn't be together after all these years.

Lola looked at Johnny, not allowing him to escape. He had come to her today, and she wouldn't let the opportunity slip. She said, "At our age, we're not young and perfect anymore. Johnny, let's give it a try."

He gazed at her.

After a long while, he placed the cup on the desk and then leaned down to kiss her lips.

It was a light kiss, a bit dry.

He pressed his face against hers, nose to nose, lips to lips, eyes looking into eyes. They were so close that their breaths mingled.

"Lola, do you feel anything?"

"A little! Too bad there's no lubricant here."

Johnny smacked her butt hard, his voice low and strained, "Lola, you've become naughty."

She stepped on his right foot with her high heel.

Bold and a bit provocative, just the way he liked it. "I bought a lot of sexy lingerie. Want to see?"

Of course, he wanted to. Any man would.

But Johnny felt uncomfortable doing such things in the office. He blushed, from his neck to his ears, looking very attractive.

Lola did it on purpose.

Seeing his reaction, she knew he couldn't hold back. She leaned in and whispered in his ear, "I'm going on a business trip tomorrow morning. Sorry, Mr. Flores."

Johnny smacked her butt again, protesting her teasing.

Lola had some work to finish. She sat at her desk, looking at documents, and said softly, "Did Jared bring you here? Tell him to go back. You can ride with me."

She didn't avoid the fact that he couldn't drive anymore. They had decided to be together, and these were everyday realities they couldn't avoid. Being overly cautious would only exhaust them both.

Lola decided to be honest.

Sure enough, once Johnny understood, he didn't dwell on it.

He called Jared and told him to leave. After hanging up, he regretted selling the cars in the garage. Some of them were Lola's favorites. He couldn't drive, but she could.

Lola seemed to read his mind and smiled, "I bought the cars. They're still in the garage. If you like, I can drive you to work in a different one every day."

Johnny said, "What husband gets driven to work by his wife every day?"

Lola replied, "I'm not your wife. We're both single now, Mr. Flores. And I have many suitors!"

She laughed.

Johnny watched her laugh, his eyes filled with affection, unable to look away.

He thought his Lola was back.

As long as they were together, nothing else mattered.

Lola was indeed busy, working until seven in the evening. She offered Johnny a cup of coffee. Johnny found it bitter, but Lola drank it with ease. "It's a domestic coffee bean."

Johnny rubbed his nose, "I'm used to imported ones."

"Especially the woman you brought home."

Lola's words came out easily, and Johnny couldn't stop her teasing. After work, they had dinner out and took a walk, holding hands.

Under the neon lights, they naturally kissed.

Johnny couldn't help but said, "How about letting Stella sleep on her own tonight? She's two now, time to be independent."

Lola smiled against his lips.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and whispered, "You try to convince her. See if she's willing."

Johnny immediately took her hand and started walking back. Lola laughed so hard she almost couldn't breathe, "Johnny, you're 40, right? Can you not be so childish?"

He put her in the driver's seat and buckled her seatbelt.

"Yes, I'm this childish!"

He leaned in and kissed her lips, "Ms. Hawkins, I can't wait any longer! Not even God can stop me."

Not even the lack of lubricant could stop him.

As he was about to close the car door, Lola stopped him. She gently held his hand and whispered, "Let's try. If it doesn't work, we'll see a therapist. Johnny, I'm serious about being with you."

In the dark, dressed in a suit, he looked down at her.

His blue eyes held something different than usual. After a long time, Johnny's voice was hoarse, "I'm serious too, Lola. This time, let's live well."

When he sat beside her, Lola leaned over and kissed him, whispering, "I'm going on a business trip tomorrow morning. If it doesn't work tonight, we'll wait until I get back."

Johnny cupped her face and groaned, "Mrs. Flores, you're going to kill me! If I hold back too much, I might not be able to function."

Lola looked at his profile, finding it very attractive.

She kissed down his neck, following the sexy lines. Her skills were naturally very good. It didn't take long for Johnny to be filled with desire, but he wasn't young anymore and couldn't bring himself to make love in the car. Finally, he held her hair and whispered, "Drive home."
