Chapter 565 Sorry, We're Trying to Conceive!
Lola was a bit thrown off.
Johnny's sudden shift in attitude caught her off guard; she never thought one night together would flip his personality like that.
But he was so genuine. Lola couldn't turn down his proposal, or maybe she just wanted to give Angelina a stable family too.
Plus, they might have another kid down the line.
After a long pause, Lola nodded softly, tears welling up in her eyes.
Johnny saw her teary eyes, leaned in, and gently licked away her tears. "Don't cry!"
"I'm not crying!" Lola stubbornly pulled the blanket over her head, not wanting him to see her vulnerable side. Only she knew how hard it was to make this compromise. Maybe this was the price of her young love for him!
Having grown up with her and knowing her so well, Johnny could easily read her feelings. He just hugged her slowly. It finally hit him that she was really back and willing to live with him.
"Lola, you're back!" he whispered.
Lola's throat felt tight, and the pain in her heart was overwhelming. She wanted to speak but couldn't get a word out.
Johnny just held her close. Downstairs, they could hear Angelina's voice, probably playing with Bobby. She was lively, showing no signs of illness.
Johnny gently pulled the blanket away, revealing Lola's face.
Her long hair was a mess, and her nose was red. She looked like she had been crying.
Johnny spoke in a low, hoarse voice, "You've raised her well! She's really cute."
He remembered that at first, he didn't want a kid. He thought about adopting or treating Lola like his child. But now that Angelina had grown up, if he had to choose, he would still pick Angelina. The thrill of a blood bond was something totally new to him.
Now that he had her, he cherished her deeply.
Johnny spent the whole morning with Lola, partly because he was happy to see her again and partly because he knew he had been too rough last night. He wanted to be there for her.
He talked a lot, and eventually, Lola fell asleep. When she woke up, it was already lunchtime.
Johnny came in to call her for lunch. Lola got up from the bed and ran her fingers through her long hair. She noticed he was dressed pretty formally even at home. "Aren't you going to the office?"
Johnny looked at his clothes and smiled faintly. "Can't I dress up at home?"
Johnny just wanted to impress her with his looks, but she had seen plenty of attractive people, so he didn't really stand out!
She got out of bed, but her legs felt a bit weak after just one step.
However, she didn't want to show any weakness in front of him, so she straightened her back. A light laugh came from behind her.
In the bathroom, Lola brushed her teeth vigorously!
Maybe because she was behaving well, Johnny asked her in the evening, "Isn't there a celebration party at the law firm? Aren't you going?"
Lola was flipping through a magazine on the sofa and lazily asked, "You're letting me go? You won't hold it against me later, will you? I can't figure out your mood these days!"
Johnny walked over to her, leaned in, and playfully bit her nose. "I'll take you there!"
Lola was a bit taken aback and said softly, "The nanny is still here!"
Johnny just kept looking at her. They had been apart for years, and he had always wanted to be with her.
Just then, Lola's phone rang. It was her secretary calling about the celebration party that evening. Lola looked into Johnny's eyes and said softly, "I'll be there on time!"
She hung up the phone. "I'll drive myself there!"
"Aren't your legs still weak?" Johnny picked up the car keys. "I'll take you there!"
Before Lola could protest, he had already picked up Angelina and grabbed Bobby with the other hand, heading outside.
Lola whispered, "I haven't changed my clothes yet!"
Johnny didn't turn back but sounded quite cheerful. "Then go change quickly! I'll wait for you in the car."
She went upstairs and changed into a black shirt dress, simple and elegant, perfect for an office gathering.
She usually didn't wear jewelry, except for the wedding ring Johnny gave her. Today, she picked a necklace from the jewelry box that looked perfect—beautiful but not too flashy.
Lola went downstairs, opened the car door, and got in.
Johnny had been talking to Angelina, but when he heard the sound, he turned to her.
"What's wrong?" Lola fastened her seatbelt.
Johnny's voice suddenly became hoarse and deep. "You look really nice in that outfit."
The dress reached her knees, and her legs were straight and long.
He still remembered how he held them last night, overwhelmed with emotion.
Lola's face flushed slightly.
The drive to the restaurant took about half an hour. It was Angelina's first time going out with both her parents, and she was quite excited.
Johnny patiently answered her questions, being incredibly gentle.
Lola leaned back in her seat, listening but not joining the conversation.
She could feel Angelina's happiness, which was different from when she lived with her and Darren. Johnny's role as a father couldn't be replaced by anyone else.
"What are you thinking about?" Suddenly, he held her hand.
Lola felt a bit uneasy and stiffened slightly. "Keep your eyes on the road."
Johnny smiled and let go of her hand.
At the restaurant entrance, Johnny parked the car and got out to open the door for Lola.
Lola said, "I can go in by myself!"
Johnny looked inside the restaurant and then chuckled lightly. "Are you afraid your colleagues will see me?"
Lola lowered her eyes. "They all know you!"
Seeing her expression, Johnny's heart softened.
"Alright, I was just joking! Go on in!" he said, preparing to get back in the car.
A few people got out of a car on the other side, including Howard, the lead attorney on the Bostan case. When he saw Lola, he approached them. "This must be your husband, Mr. Flores, right?"
Before Lola could introduce them, Howard had already warmly shaken Johnny's hand. "Mr. Flores, I'm so sorry for disturbing your newlywed life the other day! Tonight, let me treat you both to make up for it!"
Johnny smiled modestly. "Unfortunately, I was just about to head home!"
Howard insisted on inviting him.
Johnny looked at Lola. "It depends on my wife's decision!"
At this point, how could Lola say no?
Howard, catching on, patted Johnny's shoulder affectionately and lowered his voice. "You two are so in love."
Johnny maintained his modest smile as he took Angelina out, leaving Bobby at a pet store across the street. Bobby clung to the cage, baring his teeth at him!
Once inside the private room, Angelina was a hit. Everyone took turns hugging her.
Angelina, soft and cuddly, was especially endearing.
Howard and the others were busy socializing, insisting that Johnny drink. Johnny smiled slightly. "I still have to drive later."
"Get a designated driver! You both must drink tonight!"
Normally, Lola wouldn't be able to avoid it, but today Johnny wouldn't let her drink. He took the glass and smiled. "Sorry, we're trying to conceive."
The phrase "trying to conceive" was enough to spark many thoughts.
Even Lola, usually thick-skinned, couldn't help but feel embarrassed under such gazes. She leaned back in her chair, resting her head on her hand. "I'm just not feeling well."
Afterwards, Howard didn't push them to drink anymore.
The meal was lively, and Johnny was very approachable, getting to know Lola's colleagues well, even arranging another meal together.
Once they got in the car to leave, Lola said, "You really know how to boast!"
Such a boring gathering, and he actually enjoyed it.
Johnny glanced at Angelina, who seemed sleepy in her car seat.
Bobby was squatting beside her, resting his head.
Johnny's expression softened. After looking away, he said, "I found it quite interesting!"
Lola knew that Johnny just wanted to quickly integrate into her life.
She didn't say much, quietly leaning back in her seat.
Johnny lightly tossed the jacket from the seat back to her. "Cover yourself; don't catch a cold."
Lola gently draped it over herself.
Johnny didn't start the car immediately. He turned off the headlights, slightly turned, and in a low, muddled voice, asked, "After spending a day together, do you think we can start over?"
Lola sobered up a bit. She lowered her voice. "Aren't we doing fine? Why ask that?"
Johnny moved closer, holding the back of her head, his forehead against hers, and said softly, "I mean being together out of love, not just settling."
Lola lowered her eyes. "How can you tell in just one day!"
"Then a week, a month, a year, ten years! As long as you're by my side, we'll find out, okay?"
Lola whispered, "Johnny, you're asking for a promise again!"
"Yes, so will you give it?" he asked, looking deeply into her eyes.
Lola didn't answer but leaned in to kiss his lips lightly, giving him a gentle hug. "Drive! Angelina's already asleep and Bobby hasn't had dinner yet!"
Johnny's Adam's apple bobbed.
After a moment, he let her go, started the car, played soothing music, and drove slowly because Angelina was asleep.
Back at the villa, Johnny wrapped Angelina in a blanket and carried her out of the car, while Lola led Bobby.
She walked behind, watching Johnny ahead, and felt that life was pretty good right now.
Lola handed Bobby to the nanny and followed Johnny upstairs; Angelina hadn't taken her medicine yet! But Angelina was sleeping soundly, and Johnny didn't want to wake her. He looked at her face and softly asked, "Can she skip one dose?"
Lola sat by the bed, gently touched Angelina's warm face, and softly called her to wake up.
Under the dim light, Angelina woke up.
Angelina frowned and whimpered, "Mommy, I don't want to take medicine!"
Lola picked her up, holding her gently.
She comforted her for a while, then poured a few small pills from the bedside bottle and quickly got some water. Although Angelina feared the bitterness, she was obedient and took the medicine, then buried herself in Lola's arms, calling her softly.
Lola held her the whole time.
After a long while, Angelina stopped moving. Johnny thought she was asleep and tried to take her. But suddenly, Angelina started crying softly, "Mommy, will I die?"
Lola kissed her and said hoarsely, "Of course not! After the surgery, you will be a healthy little girl!"
Angelina was too young to understand. But she was still scared, holding Lola tightly. Lola patiently comforted her, and after about half an hour, Angelina finally fell asleep.
Johnny had been watching silently the whole time. He didn't dare approach, afraid of disturbing Angelina, as he could see she was dreaming.
After Lola laid Angelina down and covered her with a blanket, he gently held her shoulder. "How did she get this condition?"
Lola leaned over to dim the light.
She asked Johnny to go to the living room. Once there, Lola silently held a water cup for a long time.
After a long while, Lola said softly, "One time, Angelina woke up and overheard the doctors discussing her condition. A nurse deliberately scared her, and she developed this problem. It happens occasionally."
Johnny slowly clenched his fingers. He just gently pulled Lola into his arms.
His embrace was so warm that Lola felt like crying. She wanted to talk about Angelina's condition and the future, but she couldn't find the words.
Even if it seemed like they had reconciled, there was still some awkwardness.
Johnny kissed her forehead. "I'll be here from now on!"
They quietly embraced for a long time.
Originally, he felt particularly aroused, imagining holding her as they fell asleep tonight. But now, his focus was entirely on Angelina.
Suddenly, he regretted the things he had said to Lola before. He shouldn't have thought she wasn't a good mother. In the past three years, Lola had had a harder time than he imagined. With Darren, it was definitely not easy for her!
Johnny lowered his head, pressed his face to hers, and said softly, "I'll treat you well from now on!"
As he spoke, tears almost fell!
It was very repressed!
