Chapter 13: Just Missing a Man

Oliver insisted Charlotte go with him to the hospital.

For a minor injury, he ended up staying there for two hours.

By the time he dropped Charlotte off at home, it was already 9 PM.

Charlotte felt down but still apologized to Oliver. "Sorry for dragging you into this today, Oliver."

Oliver had mixed feelings. He thought he had a chance with Charlotte after she broke up with Ethan, but then Frederick showed up.

Even though Frederick never said a word, Oliver could tell from the way he looked at Charlotte that he had feelings for her. The Hawkins family was a big deal in Syeattel, and Frederick was a powerful guy. Although Oliver liked Charlotte, he didn't want to risk his family's well-being for love. So, he didn't dare to compete with Frederick.

Oliver joked, "Charlotte, if we're both still single in a few years, keep me in mind, alright?"

Thanks to Frederick's hints, Charlotte had a sense of his feelings.

She didn't want to hurt Oliver's feelings.

Shaking her head, Charlotte replied, "Oliver, once my dad's situation is sorted out, my family is leaving Syeattel. I don't have any plans for that right now."

Oliver stared at her quietly.

After a while, he smiled, a bit adorably. "I was just kidding! You took it seriously? It's a bit cold, go on up! Don't worry about Mr. Russell's situation, I'll talk to my dad again."

As Charlotte got out of the car, Oliver suddenly called out to her, "Charlotte!"

Charlotte turned to look at him.

Oliver waved at her from the car. For some reason, Charlotte's eyes got a bit teary, grateful he didn't say more.

She watched the car drive away before heading into the building.

The light on the first floor was out, making it quite dim. Suddenly, someone grabbed her waist and covered her mouth with a warm hand.
In the chaos, she was dragged to the stairwell. She wanted to scream, but her mouth was covered, and she could only manage a muffled "Let go of me!"

As she wished, the hand moved away, only for something warm to press against her lips.

Charlotte was stunned; it was Ethan's familiar scent.

Charlotte bit down hard and slapped him. Suddenly, all the lights around them flickered on.

Charlotte leaned against the wall, gasping for breath in panic.

Ethan said grimly, "Are you so desperate for a man? Anyone will do?"

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears, but she stubbornly lifted her head.

She laughed mockingly, "Yes! I'm really desperate for a man right now! Anyone but you will do. Ethan, does that answer satisfy you?"

Ethan's face grew darker.

He grabbed Charlotte by the neck. "How dare you!"

Charlotte shouted, "Why wouldn't I dare? Ethan, you already got my dad thrown in jail. What else wouldn't I dare to do?"

Ethan irritably pulled out a pack of cigarettes, then looked at Charlotte. "Leave Syeattel! I'll buy you a villa, and Mr. Russell will be fine!"

Charlotte's lips quivered with rage as she shouted, "So your ultimate goal is to make me your mistress? You're ruthless, Ethan!"

Ethan responded calmly, "Charlotte, I have more ways to deal with you than you can imagine."

Just then, Maria appeared in the hallway, holding a mop to strike Ethan. Ethan, maintaining his dignity and perhaps a bit of conscience, didn't fight back.

Maria, panting and furious, cursed, "You bastard! Isn't it enough that you hurt us? Now you want to harass Charlotte? I'll beat you to death!"

Tears welled up in Charlotte's eyes.

Maria comforted her, "The Russell family doesn't sell their daughter."

Opposite them, Ethan gave a cold, thin smile.
