Chapter 502 Johnny, Are You Crazy?
Gavin was pretty shocked because Johnny hardly ever came back these past few years. He hadn't seen him in like two or three years.
They kept in touch now and then, and Gavin knew Johnny was doing great abroad, always surrounded by fans wherever he went.
Gavin gave Molly a light pat, signaling her to go over to Lola.
He called out to Johnny himself, "Did you just come back recently?"
Johnny nodded, glanced at Lola, and then walked over.
Frederick felt awkward looking at him, so he let the two young guys talk and went inside.
Once Frederick left, Gavin handed Johnny a cigarette.
Johnny lit it, took a slow drag, and exhaled the smoke before asking, "You're gonna marry her? Are you sure?"
Gavin didn't answer right away. Then he looked at Johnny and smiled faintly, "If you hadn't broken up with Lola back then, your kid would be pretty grown up by now!"
Johnny stayed quiet.
Gavin lowered his voice a bit, "What's on your mind? I see you haven't had a girlfriend these past two years, and Lola's still single. What's going on with you two?"
Johnny didn't speak at first. He quietly smoked half the cigarette before saying, "When I was young, I thought Lola and I were perfect for each other! But after going abroad, I found the outside world so freeing. Turns out, no one is indispensable to anyone else!"
He paused and then added, "Gavin, it's not as complicated as you think. I just don't want to start anything. I just feel good being out there."
Gavin didn't say anything.
His gaze was hard to read because everyone knew how Johnny had entered the Hawkins Family back then—it was because Johnny had a rare blood type, and Lola liked him.
Over the years, they had developed a familial bond.
What they didn't expect was that Johnny felt constrained. He didn't want to stay with the Hawkins Family or by Lola's side. He had dated several girlfriends, but they all broke up within a few months.
As for what Johnny thought now, Gavin really didn't know.
He didn't try to persuade him because he felt Lola deserved the best. Forcing a guy to stay by her side was unnecessary for Lola. In Syeattel, there were plenty of people who wanted to pursue her!
After finishing a cigarette, the two guys went inside.
Frederick was peeling fruit for the two girls, and Charlotte was making hot cocoa. She was equally gentle and loving towards both Gavin and Johnny.
When serving the fruit tea, Johnny naturally went over to help.
Gavin took off his coat, thinking Johnny was really conflicted. No wonder Frederick ignored him!
Lola and Molly got along well. If Lola weren't a woman, Gavin would be jealous!
He sat next to Molly, putting his arm around her shoulder, and watched cartoons with her!
Lola teased him, "Gavin, you're so grown up and still watching cartoons. How embarrassing!"
She grabbed the remote to change the channel.
Gavin snatched it back, "Molly likes watching it!"
Lola laughed, resting her chin in her hand with a smile, "Oh, I see!"
She generously tossed the remote to Gavin, "It's yours!"
Gavin glanced at her.
Molly felt a bit embarrassed and gently tugged on Gavin's sleeve, "Gavin!"
Gavin, having grown up here, didn't mind at all.
Charlotte, sitting across from them, elegantly sipped her hot cocoa and said, "Molly, you're the youngest. It's only right they let you have your way."
Molly felt even more embarrassed, considering Gavin was actually a year younger than her!
Gavin winked at Molly.
Lola kicked Gavin. "Stop the display your affection!"
Gavin said, "Then you should find a husband soon."
Lola replied, "There are plenty of men!"
Gavin looked over at Johnny.
Johnny was holding an old record player, about to choose a record, seemingly not hearing their conversation, but his hand paused for a moment.
Gavin smiled faintly, "I have no objections!"
Lola flicked her long hair and said nothing, leaning back on the sofa to watch cartoons.
After a while, Johnny looked up and stared at her. Lola didn't look at him until the housekeeper came to call them for dinner.
Just then, her phone rang. It was a message from a client.
The woman was going through a divorce and was threatening to commit suicide in her bathtub, but still remembered to say goodbye to Lola.
Lola was so angry she wanted to curse.
It was cold outside, and no one wanted to go out.
She grabbed her coat and put it on, "Mom, Dad, a client needs me. I might not be back tonight!"
Frederick was the first to disapprove, "You have to go out now?"
Lola nodded, "She's about to die! I have to go!"
Johnny was already sitting at the dining table. He got up, "I'll drive you there!"
At the door, Lola was changing her shoes. Hearing this, she stood up. Without thinking, she refused, "That's not a good idea. I need to maintain client confidentiality."
Johnny was quite insistent, "I'll drive you to the building."
The ground outside was icy, and Frederick wasn't comfortable with Lola driving alone, so he said, "Let Johnny drive you. Come back early once it's resolved. Don't stay out all night!"
Lola didn't like hearing that. She waved her hand, "Dad, can we not talk about this? We're all adults!"
Frederick, "I'm your father!"
Lola quickly walked over and kissed him on the cheek, "I love you too, Dad!"
She also gave Molly a kiss, "Stay a few more days and keep my mom company."
Molly was flustered by her enthusiasm.
Lola winked and left briskly.
In the car, as Johnny fastened his seatbelt, he asked her, "So, do you often go to bars and places like that to drink?"
Lola casually replied, "Occasionally."
Johnny suddenly turned his head and asked softly, "Do you look for men there?"
Lola signaled him to drive. After a moment, she said, "You sure are nosy!"
Johnny's face darkened.
They only spoke a few words occasionally during the drive.
In fact, it had been many years since the two of them had been alone like this, in a private space with just the two of them and no one else.
Lola eventually stopped talking much.
She turned her head to the window, and Johnny played a song.
After a long time, he asked her, "Do you have a boyfriend now?"
Lola said, "No! But if I wanted a boyfriend, I could get one anytime. After all, going to a bar is quite convenient. No need to be responsible, and no need to talk about compensation when breaking up." She said this with a light laugh.
She had really liked Johnny.
Throughout her youth, all she had was Johnny. She gave him the best years of her girlhood. But he didn't want her anymore.
He broke up with her and even brought several girlfriends back. She was sad at first, but now she was over it.
If Johnny didn't appear in front of her, she felt he was already insignificant in her life.
Now he asked about her relationships, and she couldn't be bothered to guess his thoughts.
Johnny's expression was troubled, but he didn't press further. Hearing these words from Lola was hard for him.
When he decided not to be with her, he should have known that one day Lola would be with someone else. Whether it was dating, marriage, or even a one-night stand.
His fingertips turned a bit white, and when they reached a red light, he suddenly braked hard.
A screeching sound rang out, and Johnny snapped back to reality, saying softly, "Sorry!"
Lola didn't say anything. She told Johnny these things to make it clear he shouldn't have any illusions that she was waiting for him without any other men around.
She wasn't being self-destructive; she had dated one or two people.
There was a famous celebrity who had a fling with her and still hadn't given up.
She didn't want to hide anything from Johnny; perhaps subconsciously, she didn't want to have any more ties with him.
The red light at the intersection flashed on and off.
Johnny took out a pack of cigarettes from the glove compartment, lit one, and leaned back in his seat, smoking without saying a word.
Next to him was Lola, someone he had given up on but often thought about over the years. But clearly, Lola didn't think about him much anymore.
Johnny gave a self-deprecating smile.
Half an hour later, the car stopped in front of the client's building, and Lola told Johnny to go back first.
Johnny nodded.
Lola said, "Alright, I'll try to come down soon."
The client was quite difficult to console, and by the time Lola had calmed her down, it was already 1 AM.
Lola was exhausted. She got into the car, took off her coat, and leaned back in the seat, exhaling deeply.
That woman had almost died!
Johnny quietly watched her. From this angle, he could see Lola's profile.
She had inherited Charlotte's beauty, but her features also had a bit of Frederick's, making her look perfect. The shirt she was wearing was slightly tight due to her posture, revealing her mature curves.
Johnny's Adam's apple moved slightly.
He casually scrolled through his phone, "Let's get something to eat."
Lola closed her eyes, "At this hour? What could we possibly get?"
She opened her eyes slightly and smiled lightly, "Johnny, how about I take you to a bar?"
She leaned closer to him, her voice soft, "You didn't bring a girlfriend back this time, how are you managing?"
Johnny looked down at her.
He knew she was doing this on purpose, trying to dispel any thoughts he might have. In fact, he didn't even know what he was thinking; he just wanted to spend some time with her while he was back.
They couldn't be a couple, but he cared about Lola more than any other woman.
He didn't say anything, and Lola laughed.
She leaned back in her seat, "Then let's go home!"
Suddenly, Johnny said, "Let's go to the bar!"
Lola turned her head to him, smiling faintly.
Lola took Johnny to a bar she frequented. The bartender recognized her and handed her a drink.
Lola lightly flicked her hair, "Give him a drink too."
The bartender glanced at Johnny. He thought Johnny looked handsome and wealthy, probably just as rich as Lola. So he made Johnny the most expensive drink.
Johnny took out his wallet and handed it to Lola, but she didn't take it. She smiled lazily, "I'll buy you a drink!"
Johnny quietly watched her. He noticed that Lola was quite familiar with many people here, but there was no ambiguity, just like friends. He felt a bit better.
They chatted, mostly about work. Finally, Lola smiled, "Don't send blood bags here anymore; I haven't needed them for a long time."
Johnny's gaze deepened.
Lola stood up, "I'm going to the restroom."
Johnny nodded, watching her walk towards a dimly lit hallway, presumably where the restroom was. But after about 10 minutes, Lola hadn't returned.
Johnny got up to look for her. But as soon as he got there, he froze.
Lola was with a very handsome man, wearing sunglasses and a hat. The man had Lola pinned against the wall, speaking to her in a low voice.
Lola didn't seem unhappy.
She even lightly patted the young man's face. The man wrapped his arm around her waist, resting his head on her shoulder, seemingly complaining about something.
Even though he couldn't hear anything, he could tell from their body language that they were in some sort of relationship, at least to some extent.
And Lola didn't dislike the man.
Johnny didn't realize how cold his gaze was. He just stood there watching Lola until she looked up and saw him. Lola smiled lightly and said in a low voice, "Johnny, why don't you go back first?"
Johnny's voice was cold, "Are you going to sleep with him?"
Lola didn't say anything, just looked at him.
Johnny's temper finally erupted, "If you want to sleep with a man, why not consider me? Lola, I'm still here, and you're going to go with someone else?"
Lola's remaining bit of courtesy towards him vanished completely.
She spoke coldly, "Who are you to me? Do I need to report to you who I'm with?"
She hadn't been in a great mood, but Johnny's behavior made her want to be with someone else even more. She grabbed the man's hand, "Let's go!"
Johnny still stood there. The dim light above cast shadows on his face, making him look extremely gloomy.
Suddenly, he strode to the door.
He yanked Lola behind him and then punched the clean-cut young man. Gasps of surprise echoed around them, and Johnny casually threw down a blank check.
He dragged Lola to the car.
Lola struggled, "What are you doing? Johnny! Are you crazy?"
Johnny pinned her against the seat, his face cold, "Do you like him?"
Lola sneered, "He feels alright!"
Johnny slowly let her go, lowering his eyes, lost in thought. Lola said softly, "Johnny, this is pointless! Let me go; I want to go back."
Johnny asked in a very low voice, "Lola, are you trying to get back at me?"
Lola was silent for a moment, then smiled, "Sorry to disappoint you! Johnny, did you expect me to find an excellent man to marry, and then you'd feel a slight regret, reminiscing about our youth? Yeah, you could accept that! What you can't accept is that I can be with any man now, except you!"
Her smile faded, "I'm not trying to get back at anyone! How I live my life is my own business! And what you think is your own business!"
With that, she opened the car door to get out.
There was no need for them to talk anymore.
She had liked him and been hurt by him, but she wasn't going to indulge him anymore!
The door opened slightly, but the next second, it was slammed shut!
Johnny spoke coldly, "Anyone but me? Am I worse than them? Don't you want to give it a try?"
