Chapter 516 Johnny, What Answer Do You Want to Hear?
Gavin took Molly back to his place. Feeling kind of bad for her, he let her chill on the couch and watch TV while he headed to the kitchen to whip up something.
While Molly was glued to the TV, Gavin washed a plate of strawberries. They were all bright red and looked pretty cute.
Molly grabbed the plate, munching on a small one before offering another to Gavin.
Gavin didn't take it. Instead, he leaned in, kissed her on the lips, smiled, and went back to cooking.
Molly blushed but didn't want to be away from him, so she carried the plate and followed him into the kitchen.
Gavin just lifted her onto the counter.
Watching him roll up his sleeves to cook, with a watch worth millions on his wrist, she whispered, "I can stay at my parents' place, so you don't have to work so hard."
"Feeling sorry for me?" Gavin grinned.
Molly did feel sorry but didn't want to admit it. She just focused on eating strawberries.
Gavin glanced at her and smiled.
After a bit, Molly suddenly remembered something. "If Sarah comes looking for me again, I won't let her have you!"
Gavin just kept smiling.
Molly jumped down and leaned against his back, saying, "Actually, I do care. She's so beautiful and amazing. I really thought you were gonna marry her back then!"
Gavin looked back but didn't say anything, and Molly didn't push it.
Then, Molly hugged him a bit tighter.
Gavin said softly, "I might be a bit busy later. Find something to do yourself. If you get bored, you can go back to the Devereux Mansion with your parents. It's big and fun there."
Molly shook her head.
She wanted to be with him, even if he was busy. He had to come home every night, right?
She whispered that she could learn to cook.
Gavin couldn't stand it. After thinking for a moment, he decided to bring someone from the villa to cook for her. As for cleaning the apartment, he would handle it during his time off.
Seeing him give in, Molly was happy and ran out with the strawberries to eat.
Gavin just shook his head lightly.
Right then, his phone rang. It was Lola, giving a few instructions with airport noise in the background before boarding her plane.
At Seattle Airport, Lola had just hung up and was about to go through security when her phone rang again. Thinking it was Gavin, she answered, "Gavin, we'll talk when I get back! There's something with Darren, and I have to go immediately."
There was silence on the other end for a moment.
Johnny's voice came through. "You're going to see Darren?"
Lola looked at her phone; it was Johnny. She said, "What's it to you?"
Johnny's voice was a bit tense. "Why are you going to see him?"
"It's none of your business! Do I have to report to you where I go and what I do? Did you report to me when you got a girlfriend? Johnny, we slept together a couple of times, but we're both free. I won't interfere with your affairs, so please don't interfere with my private life, got it?"
"Lola!" Johnny's voice was strained. "To you, I'm nothing now, am I?"
She was going to see someone else so openly, fully aware of how much it upset him.
Darren was in trouble, and Lola was already in a bad mood. Johnny's accusations just made it worse. She snorted, "Yeah, nothing!"
She hung up and went through security.
She flew to Crystal Valley City.
Darren had gotten seriously injured while filming. With no family around, Lola, as his lawyer, had to go sign some documents.
She stayed in Crystal Valley City for a week, then flew back to Seattle.
Lola got Darren admitted to a hospital. He would probably be there for three months. But luckily, he was young and wouldn't have any lasting damage.
By the time she wrapped everything up, half a month had passed.
Lola got back to her apartment from the office. As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she saw Johnny, in a black trench coat, leaning against the wall and smoking. He looked tall and handsome.
Lola silently admired him for a few seconds, swiped her card to open the door, and asked indifferently, "Why are you here again? Didn't we settle this?"
Johnny stared at her for a long time. He stubbed out his cigarette and followed her inside. "How long are you gonna take care of Darren like that?"
Lola tossed her briefcase on the couch, got herself a glass of ice water, took a sip, and shot back. "You really care a lot, don't you?"
Johnny walked up to her. "I want to know, in what capacity are you taking care of him? Girlfriend or lover?"
Lola put down the glass, crossed her arms, and gave a cold smile. "Johnny, what answer do you want to hear?"
He cupped her face, trying to kiss her, but Lola blocked him with two fingers. "I'm exhausted! I really don't have the energy for this!"
She grabbed her wallet, pulled out a couple of thousand dollars, and threw it at him. "Go find yourself a woman!"
The money slid off him, and Johnny just stared at her. After a long time, he said hoarsely, "Lola, I really want to start over with you!"
"Did you ask me? Do I have to agree?" Lola sneered. "The door's over there!"
Under the crystal chandelier, Johnny's face looked pale as he stared at Lola.
After a long pause, he asked the question that had been eating at him, "Has Darren taken my place?"
Lola looked at him quietly.
Johnny's eyes were red, a look she had never seen before. He said hoarsely, "Lola, if I could do it all over again, I wouldn't choose to leave! Life is long, and I really want another chance."
Only he knew the price of freedom.
He had stayed abroad for a few years, separated from Lola, and returned to the Hawkins Family.
Frederick still treated him well, and he lived in the Hawkins Family as if he had never left.
But he knew it was different. Because once Lola got married, his position in that family would become very delicate. Or if he had a wife, he wouldn't be suitable to live there anymore either.
In short, he was already an outsider. It was his regret, reluctance, and determination to stay in the family. After eight years of hard work, he had a fortune worth billions of dollars. He had been in the limelight, standing at the top and enjoying the envy of others, but he had lost the most precious family and Lola.
