Chapter 181 Once unfaithful, never faithful!
The experts were stumped. In the end, Charlotte woke up on her own.
Frederick had just finished talking with some experts and was at the ward door when he heard Charlotte's weak but unmistakable voice.
His heart skipped a beat. He'd never felt such an urgent need to see someone.
He quickened his pace and gently opened the door.
Charlotte was leaning against the headboard, chatting with Maria. She looked thinner, her golden hair cascading over her frail shoulders, making her seem delicate. When she saw Frederick, her smile faded.
The atmosphere was tense.
Maria stood up awkwardly. "You two talk!"
But Charlotte gently tugged her sleeve and whispered, "Mom, I want some oatmeal!"
Maria smiled lovingly. "I'll get some for you. Wait here."
Maria left.
Frederick slowly walked in, standing close to Charlotte but not daring to touch her.
Charlotte was calm and polite. "I heard you helped find a doctor for me. Thanks, Mr. Hawkins."
"It was the least I could do," he said, his voice hoarse, staring at her.
Charlotte looked at him too.
Then she said slowly, "But there's no need for this between us anymore. You don't have to worry about what Lily said; it's all in the past. From the moment we ended, none of it had anything to do with you."
Frederick was a top-notch lawyer, great at arguing in court, but now he didn't know what to say.
He had broken up with Charlotte, thinking it was a dignified end, but it was a lifelong pain for her.
Frederick walked out of the ward.
He didn't leave the hospital; he just sat in his golden Bentley, quietly smoking.
He and Charlotte had started from mutual attraction, lacking youthful infatuation. He had always controlled the relationship well. He liked Charlotte but believed he didn't love her deeply. At least when they broke up, he had decisively given her a check.
But when Charlotte took the check and walked out of his life, he realized he couldn't stand the thought of her belonging to someone else one day.
She would love someone else the way she loved him.
Frederick leaned back in his seat, tilting his head slightly, his Adam's apple moving up and down. He always said Charlotte couldn't handle it, but now it was him who couldn't handle it.
Frederick sat in the car all night.
At dawn, he stubbed out his cigarette and got out of the car. He walked up the steps to the ward.
Charlotte was already awake, sitting up and taking her temperature. In her loose hospital gown, with a thermometer in her mouth, she looked particularly pitiful.
When she saw him coming, a coldness flashed in her eyes.
Frederick walked over and gently took the thermometer away.
Charlotte looked up at him.
Frederick's voice was hoarse. "Come with me to a place."
Before she could resist, he scooped her up and walked straight out of the ward.
Charlotte was stunned.
When she came to her senses, she pounded his shoulder. "Frederick, what are you doing?"
He let her hit him; the pain was nothing to him.
A nurse came over to collect the thermometer and was shocked to see them. "Mr. Hawkins, where are you taking the patient?"
Frederick ignored her.
He quickly carried Charlotte downstairs to the car, buckled her seatbelt, and locked the car door.
Charlotte, no matter how calm, couldn't hold it together anymore. "Frederick, you're crazy!"
Frederick slowly buckled his seatbelt, focused on the road ahead, but his voice was gentle. "I'll bring you back later."
Charlotte didn't struggle anymore.
She said softly, "It's useless, Frederick. This won't change anything! I'd rather you be as carefree as when you gave me the check, instead of dragging this out."
She had taken the check to make a clean break.
It was supposed to be mutual consent, a good breakup.
Isn't this what he wanted?
Charlotte didn't want to say more and turned to look out the window.
Frederick sat for a moment, then started the car. Charlotte recognized the road leading to his apartment. Sure enough, half an hour later, he parked under the apartment building.
He forced her into the apartment.
The moment the door opened, Charlotte was stunned.
Morning dew, Baroque curtains, vases, and couple slippers.
It was exactly the same as when she lived there, even restored to the Valentine's Day black theme.
Everything was a trace of her love for him.
Charlotte's heart ached.
What did he mean? Did he think she would be moved by this?
Frederick hugged her from behind, kissing the soft spot behind her ear. He said emotionally in a hoarse voice, "Charlotte, let's start over! Live like we used to. This time I'll treat you well. I won't let you down again! I'll find the best doctor to heal your leg, so you won't have any regrets!"
Charlotte always thought she had cried all her tears that night.
But seeing this now, she still wanted to cry, not out of being moved, but out of sadness. These things reminded her of how she had loved a man, how she waited for him every night, and how she looked forward to a future with him.
But every time, he had chosen to be with Katherine.
Regret. How could that word define what she lost that night?
She lost her family, her dreams, and her trust in her lover.
That darkest night, she was utterly disappointed in him.
Frederick looked at her with deep affection. He knelt on one knee in front of her, holding a perfect diamond ring, even more dazzling than the previous one.
Charlotte was completely stiff.
At this moment, she lost all her strength.
Frederick kissed her fingers, his voice hoarse. "Charlotte, I spent a week convincing that Manilove antique dealer to sell me the morning dew! If your leg doesn't recover, we'll play at home! I'll play for you! Charlotte, I'm asking you to let me take care of you, for a lifetime! I'll spend Valentine's Day with you every year. We'll celebrate all the holidays together! You like kids, we'll have a few more!"
He wanted to be with her and settle down.
He had never desired marriage like this before.
Frederick held her fingertips, gently sliding the ring onto her ring finger. The perfect diamond ring fit her finger just right.
But Charlotte pulled her finger back.
She wouldn't let him put the ring on her.
Frederick's body stiffened, and he slowly looked up.
Charlotte said calmly, "I'm very touched! Really! A man doing so much for me at least shows he cares, but Frederick, once unfaithful, always unfaithful! And you've had so many issues before! There's no possibility between us, not because you don't love me, but because I don't love you anymore."
Frederick slowly stood up.
He looked down at Charlotte.
In the morning light, her face had a fine layer of fuzz, looking very cute, but her expression was firm. "Take me back to the hospital. I don't want to alarm anyone."
Frederick reached out, gently caressing her delicate face.
He suddenly grabbed the back of her head and kissed her hard on the lips, sliding his tongue in before she could react.
He wanted to kiss her. He wanted to evoke all her memories of his body. He didn't believe Charlotte could forget those.
A slap landed on his handsome face.
Charlotte's eyes were red, panting. "Frederick, don't make me look down on you! There's no possibility for us, not now and ever. Do you understand?"
