Chapter 15: She Might Not Agree
After the restaurant closed for the night, Charlotte stepped out into a steady downpour. The rain made the streets glisten. Without an umbrella, she used her handbag to shield her head and ran about 600 feet to a bus stop for cover. Her clothes were soaked, and with trembling hands, she tried to hail a cab on her phone. It was tough to get a taxi in the rain, and Charlotte had been waiting for a long time; luck didn't seem to be on her side.
Across the street, Frederick's car was parked. Inside, he quietly observed Charlotte. He watched as she ran through the rain, her clothes drenched, clutching her phone, trembling. Beside him in the passenger seat was Chloe, who had been on her phone for an hour and was now yawning from boredom.
"Frederick, you said we were going out to eat, right? You've been choosing a place for an hour and still haven't made up your mind. Oh, wait... Isn't that Oliver's girlfriend?" Chloe asked.
Frederick lazily gripped the steering wheel and asked, "Oliver's girlfriend?"
Chloe tapped on the window. "Yeah, Charlotte, the one who got into that fight with Ethan at the police station last time! Should we give her a ride?"
Frederick looked reluctant. "Oliver's girlfriend? That might not be a good idea."
"She just got a cab!" Chloe suddenly said with a hint of regret.
Frederick looked over. Sure enough, a blue taxi had turned around and was passing by his car. Chloe pulled out her phone and dialed Oliver's number.
"Oliver, what kind of boyfriend are you? I just saw Charlotte. It's so late, and why aren't you picking her up?"
On the other end, Oliver replied, "Yeah, my bad!"
Upon hearing this, Frederick thought to himself, "Oliver, you really have some nerve!"
Chloe chatted with Oliver for a bit longer before hanging up. She then clung to Frederick's arm and said sweetly, "Frederick, how about inviting Charlotte to play the piano at my birthday party? She's having a tough time right now; we can pay her extra."
Frederick started the car and said calmly, "That depends on whether she'll come. How do you know she's having a tough time?"
"Isn't she working part-time here? She must be struggling. I'm sure she'll come if we invite her," Chloe insisted.
After a moment, she recalled something. "Frederick, weren't you supposed to take me out for a meal? Why are we going home?"
Frederick glanced at his sister. "Aren't you watching your diet? Still fixated on food?"
Chloe was immediately convinced. She took out her phone and started chatting with Ethan.
The next day, Frederick hurried home to grab some documents. As he came downstairs, he heard Chloe complaining, "Frederick, Miss Russell turned me down! It's so strange. Isn't she supposed to be struggling? Why pass up an opportunity to make some money?"
Dressed in a suit and rushing to a meeting, Frederick lightly tapped his sister's head. "If she agreed, she'd have to be as crazy as you."
Chloe pouted, her lovely face betraying her annoyance. "Mom, see, Frederick's picking on me again!"
Laura was sitting in the living room, elegantly sipping coffee. She smiled and said to Frederick, "I thought Miss Russell was quite nice when I met her last time. I didn't expect her to be Oliver's girlfriend."
Frederick thought it was unnecessary to explain the misunderstanding. He casually replied, "Oliver is still pursuing her."
Laura put down her cup and said calmly, "Miss Russell has a gentle nature. I think she'd be a better match for you."
Frederick's expression became more serious as he nodded and left. After he left, Chloe leaned closer to her mother and whispered, "Frederick seems to be waiting for that one."
Laura smiled faintly. She told her daughter, "With Frederick and that person's personalities, they are destined not to work out. I think Miss Russell has a better chance."
Chloe was surprised but promptly devised a straightforward plan in her head.
