Chapter 75 She's So Heartless

Charlotte dropped her gaze and gave a small smile. She knew where she stood with Frederick, but he had never treated her badly. At least their relationship was out in the open.

She stayed quiet.

Ethan let out an awkward laugh. He used to think she was soft-hearted, but now he saw how ruthless she could be. How had he missed it?

Back then, he dumped her over the phone to chase after Chloe. He had expected her to cry and beg, but she just paused for a minute and said, "Okay." After that, she never reached out again.

It was like their past never happened. She didn't even come back for her stuff and blocked him on online.

Sometimes Ethan wondered, 'Did Charlotte ever really love me? How could she move on so easily?'

Ethan turned and walked away. Downstairs, he pulled out the apartment key and tossed it in the trash.

Charlotte stood there for a moment. Maria's voice called from inside, "Charlotte, why are you still out there?"

Charlotte pulled herself together and went inside.

William was asleep. Charlotte tidied up and got ready to leave. Maria walked her to the door.

When they opened it, the cigarette butts on the ground were hard to miss.

Maria guessed what had happened and was still a bit upset. "Did that jerk come by again? Charlotte, you have to understand that Ethan is a complete jerk."

Charlotte patted Maria's hand and softly reassured her, "Don't worry. I won't get back to him."

Just then, Frederick called. Charlotte felt uneasy about picking up the phone with Maria around.

Maria, being considerate, went back inside to give her some privacy. As she closed the door, she thought, 'How wonderful it would be if Charlotte married Frederick! She's been through so much.'

Although she said nothing, Maria had noticed that the pink diamond necklace Charlotte's mother left her was gone. It was the only keepsake Charlotte had from her mother.

Frederick had been staying at the office for a few days.

On Friday, he called Charlotte to say he'd be coming back to the apartment that night. Charlotte blushed a little. "Okay."

Frederick hadn't seen her for a few days and was in the mood for some flirting. "You sound happy. Did you miss me? Which part of me did you miss most?"

Charlotte, familiar with Frederick's outer decorum concealing his inner rascality, found his question audacious. Unwilling to back down, she teased back, "Every bit of you!"

Surprised by Charlotte's bold response, Frederick was taken aback, intrigued by her unexpected playfulness. This only added to his anticipation for the intimate evening that lay ahead. Though Charlotte had hinted at her inexperience with men, Frederick had always interpreted it as playful banter rather than a serious revelation.

Frederick's Adam's apple bobbed slightly. "You little rascal!"

Charlotte's tone was gentle. "I'll run a bath for you!" With that, she hung up the phone.

Frederick loosened his tie with his long fingers.

He immediately shut down his laptop, grabbed his coat, and headed out. Cherie was a bit surprised; she thought Frederick would be working late tonight.

Frederick was in a great mood. He signed a check, telling Cherie and the others to go out for dinner as a token of appreciation for their recent hard work.

His signature gracing the check, Frederick's handsome features bore a subtle smile, enhancing his already striking appearance.

Cherie thought to herself, 'Look at him. He must be eager to see Miss Russell! It seems he really likes her. I've never seen Frederick go home to someone like this before.'
