Chapter 153 Frederick's Going to Bankrupt the Lawson Family

Nicholas's mom pointed at her for a while before finally speaking.

"I want Nicholas to break up with you! The Lawson family can't accept you as a daughter-in-law."

"You'll get your wish!" Charlotte said, standing up to leave.

Just then, Nicholas walked in, looking worried. "Mom!"

He glanced at Charlotte, searching her face for answers.

Charlotte got it immediately.

Mrs. Lawson didn't like her. Even though Nicholas was persistent, he couldn't make the final call.

Charlotte did care for him.

But given the situation, she had to end it.

With grace, Charlotte said, "Nicholas, let's end this. A marriage not accepted by the family won't be happy. Thanks for being with me."

Nicholas didn't want to break up.

He argued with Mrs. Lawson, clearly upset, but she wouldn't budge. Finally, he looked at Charlotte, defeated, and softly said, "I'll go abroad with you, okay?"

He held her hand.

Charlotte found it ridiculous.

He was too submissive!

If she married into a family where even the husband had to answer to his mom, what about her?

She gently pulled her hand away. "Nicholas, I don't want this kind of relationship. While our feelings aren't too deep, it's not too late to end it."

Nicholas looked crushed.

Charlotte could tell he hadn't been doing well, likely restricted by his family, but that only made her more certain she couldn't move forward with him.

She whispered, "I'm sorry," and turned to leave.

In the quiet café, Mrs. Lawson's harsh voice cut through.

"Don't want this kind of relationship? Maybe you prefer being toyed with by Frederick?"

Charlotte felt suffocated.

In her relationship with Frederick, she had given her heart. It wasn't her fault it didn't work out.

Why did Nicholas's mom have to be so harsh?

This was a high-end restaurant.

Charlotte tried to keep her cool and said softly, "Now I see why Nicholas is still single. With a mom like you, he probably has little courage to pursue girls."

She glanced at Nicholas again, not wanting to make a scene. She nodded slightly and left.

As she walked out, her eyes were a bit red.

She had been serious about Nicholas.

But Charlotte had her limits. No meant no. She wouldn't compromise herself.

She left decisively, and Nicholas had a heated argument with his mom.

Mrs. Lawson's words got even nastier, each one belittling Charlotte more. Maybe for Mrs. Lawson, the fact that Charlotte didn't want her son was unforgivable!

Charlotte got into her car.

She didn't start it right away but took a tissue to wipe her red, sore eyes.

The passenger door opened.

Frederick, bringing in the cold wind, sat beside her.

Charlotte turned away. "Frederick, get out!"

Frederick saw her red eyes and asked softly, "You broke up with Nicholas? I told you, what's so good about him? Call him gentle and refined if you want; but he is just indecisive in my eyes!"

Charlotte was heartbroken and couldn't stand hearing this.

She threw the tissue at him. "Get out of the car!"

Frederick didn't move; he just stared at her.

Charlotte didn't want anyone, especially Frederick, to see her like this.

Since he wouldn't leave, she kicked him twice.

Frederick grabbed her leg, gently stroked it, and said hoarsely, "Charlotte, you only lose your temper with me!"

She glared at him, her eyes moist and captivating.

Frederick leaned in, brushed her cheek, and sighed, "You broke up with Nicholas. I should be happy, maybe even thank that old woman! But seeing you almost crying breaks my heart. Charlotte, no one else can bully you except me."

Then Frederick got out of the car and dragged Charlotte out with him.

Charlotte was still in a daze. Had he heard everything Mrs. Lawson said? That added to her embarrassment.

When she came to her senses, she struggled. "Frederick, what are you doing?"

Frederick wrapped his arm around her shoulders.

He looked down at her. "I'm standing up for you!"

Inside the café, they were still arguing when Mrs. Lawson saw Frederick holding Charlotte as they walked in.

She was furious, pointing at them and saying to Nicholas, "Do you see this? She can never marry into our family; she will ruin us."

Nicholas's face was pale as he looked at Charlotte.

Charlotte wanted to speak, but Frederick whispered in her ear, "If you dare to speak, I'll kiss you immediately."

Frederick confronted Mrs. Lawson.

He put on a polished, elite demeanor, full of grace. "Mrs. Lawson, hello!"

Mrs. Lawson snorted, "Oh, come on! Frederick, take Miss Russell away! Nicholas can't afford to marry her!"

She thought Charlotte was just a girl Frederick was toying with, so it didn't matter if she was rude to her.

Frederick coldly laughed.

He said, "Indeed, the Lawson family can't afford to have her!"

Mrs. Lawson's face changed dramatically.

She questioned, "Frederick, are you going to fall out with me over an unrelated woman? How will you explain this to your parents?"

Frederick laughed harshly. "Mrs. Lawson, I'm 28 years old. If I can't handle my own troubles and still need my parents' help, what makes me different from a useless person? What I want to convey is that Charlotte is a girl I cherish. Her history with me should be an honor for your family. We had a small disagreement, and in a moment of anger, she dated Nicholas for 10 days. Those ten days should be seen as a fortunate opportunity for you, a gift from me to the Lawson family."

"As for the future," Frederick smiled faintly, but it didn't reach his eyes. "The ten days Charlotte spent with Nicholas, I don't want anyone to know. If anyone gossips about this in public, I promise you I will bankrupt the Lawson family and use the proceeds to set off fireworks over Syeattel for a month. After a month, there will be no more Lawson family in Syeattel."

Mrs. Lawson pointed at Frederick, almost fainting from anger.

She couldn't believe Frederick actually dared to threaten her like this!

Mrs. Lawson ordered, "Nicholas, contact your uncles and cousins immediately. I want to teach this disrespectful jerk a lesson, I want to—"

Nicholas didn't move.

He looked at Charlotte, his eyes a bit red.

He really liked her!

After a long time, he spoke softly, "Charlotte, I'm sorry."

Charlotte was right; they weren't suitable.

He had tried for their future, but all he could achieve was to make Charlotte bow to his mother, which Charlotte didn't need to do.
