Chapter 264 We're Having Another Baby
Charlotte was all ears, soaking in every word.
Her heart ached. After a few soothing words, she softly said, "You in the car? Swing by my place."
Chloe was bawling her eyes out, but she agreed to come over.
Charlotte hung up and dialed Andrew.
It was a tough spot for her, so she treaded carefully, "Andrew, Chloe called me. I told her to crash at my place tonight."
Andrew's voice was raspy. "She barely ate dinner; make sure she gets some food."
Charlotte hummed in agreement, hung up, and headed to the kitchen.
Frederick trailed behind her, making milk for Lola. He casually asked, "Did they have a fight?"
Charlotte just hummed and lifted the pot lid.
As she was cooking the noodles, a wave of nausea hit her from the smell.
This feeling was all too familiar.
Charlotte clutched her chest and dry-heaved a few times.
Frederick, done with the milk, rushed over when he heard her, asking nervously, "What's up?"
Charlotte's face was a bit pale. She had a hunch and gently shook her head. "It's nothing. Just feeling a bit queasy."
Frederick helped her sit down.
He squatted in front of her, gently patting her and softly said, "No more housework for you. Let the maid handle it, or I'll take care of you."
At that moment, he was on an equal footing with her.
Charlotte gazed at his handsome face, feeling quite moved. Frederick was indeed a good husband.
She gently touched his face and softly said, "Didn't you want another kid? Frederick, maybe Lola will have a little brother or sister next year."
Frederick was stunned.
Charlotte pulled his hand and gently placed it on her lower abdomen. "Are you so happy you're speechless?"
Given how often they were intimate, having a kid wasn't a shocker, right?
After a bit, Frederick found his voice again. His hand gently caressed her flat stomach, knowing it was too early to feel anything, but he just wanted to touch and feel the presence of the child.
Later, he knelt down close to her.
Charlotte felt a wave of tenderness in her heart. No woman would dislike a man being close to her. He didn't say anything, but she could feel his happiness.
"Frederick, serve the noodles, or they'll get overcooked."
Frederick was still reluctant.
Charlotte's slender fingers gently traced his handsome features. "If I am really pregnant, don't neglect Lola."
Frederick chuckled.
He said, "How could I? I'll take care of them both." Then he scooped Charlotte up and plopped her down on the living room sofa.
After setting her down, his blue eyes were glued to her belly.
Charlotte patted his hand. "Go serve the noodles and warm up Lola's milk."
Frederick leaned in for a kiss. "Charlotte, thank you."
He headed to the kitchen to finish up, and soon enough, Chloe's car pulled up.
Chloe was still a mess, tears streaming down her face.
Frederick shook the milk bottle. "Did Andrew mess with you again?"
Charlotte couldn't stand hearing that and nudged him, "Lola's probably about to crash. Shouldn't you take the milk to her?"
Frederick's gaze was intense.
He didn't say anything more and slowly walked upstairs to take care of the kid.
Chloe talked for ages, then finally sat at the dining table, sniffling as she devoured the bowl of noodles.
Under the dim light, her face had a pearly sheen, and fine sweat beaded on her nose.
Charlotte got why Andrew couldn't let go.
For someone like Andrew, always tangled in schemes, having Chloe around must be a breath of fresh air.
"Take it easy." Charlotte was two years younger than Chloe, but she looked at her like she was a kid.
Chloe finished the noodles in one go.
She leaned on Charlotte, even though Charlotte and Andrew were family, she couldn't help it.
After Frederick put Lola to bed, he came downstairs and saw Chloe sprawled on Charlotte's lap. He walked over and tapped her head. "Don't lie on Charlotte's lap."
Charlotte couldn't help but say, "It's fine."
Frederick's gaze was intense, and she didn't dare say more.
Frederick pulled Chloe up to sit properly. He sat across from her with a milk bottle, looking all serious. "If you can't let go, then make do. If you're not happy, follow Mom and Dad's wishes and find someone nice to date."
Chloe lowered her eyes, not saying a word.
Frederick continued, "Dating isn't illegal. Or are you scared that if you date someone, he won't want you?"
"No." Chloe immediately denied it.
"It better not be. Otherwise, that's just sad." Frederick snorted lightly.
He walked to the kitchen to wash the milk bottle. He meticulously cleaned Lola's bottle and put it in the sterilizer.
Chloe was stunned watching him.
At night, when they were going to bed, Charlotte tossed and turned.
Frederick turned to her and softly asked, "Can't sleep?"
Charlotte responded with a hum.
He knew she was stressing about Chloe, so he sighed softly. "Charlotte, you can't baby her forever. She's grown now and needs to handle her own stuff. If we keep stepping in, when will she ever grow up?"
Charlotte had to admit, he had a point.
She snuggled into his arms, soaking up his warmth, and whispered, "Come with me to the hospital tomorrow. I'll feel better after a check-up."
Frederick lowered his head and kissed her.
He'd already asked Cherie to clear his schedule, so he could be with her all day tomorrow.
Early the next morning, they dropped Lola off at preschool first.
When getting into the car, Frederick thoughtfully helped Charlotte in. Lola sat in her car seat, her eyes wide open.
Charlotte settled in.
Lola's gaze fell on her belly, and she asked softly, "Mommy, do you have another baby?"
Charlotte was visibly startled.
Frederick buckled Lola's seatbelt and said with a smile, "I didn't say anything. She's just super smart."
As a dad, Frederick was proud.
Charlotte didn't hide it either. She kissed Lola and gently said, "We'll know after the check-up."
Lola wasn't upset. She wanted a little brother or sister. With more toys at home, she could invite Johnny over to play.
After dropping off Lola, Frederick took Charlotte to the hospital, where Cherie had already set up everything with the doctor.
Soon, they got the results.
She was five weeks pregnant.
On the long bench in the hospital corridor, Charlotte held the test results and stared at them for a long time.
Frederick stood beside her. He immediately called Patrick, his voice soft. "Yeah, I'll bring her back in a bit."
After hanging up, he looked down at her.
Charlotte looked back at him.
Frederick's voice was hoarse. "Charlotte, we're gonna have another baby."
His heart was tender, and he couldn't help but gently hug her, letting her lean against his abdomen, continuously stroking her soft golden hair. He never knew before how much he longed for kids.
After a long embrace, he gently brushed her cheek. "Charlotte, let's get married, okay?"
She responded with a hum, her voice nasal. "But Frederick, you haven't proposed, and you don't have a ring."
His heart was full of warmth. "Aren't two kids more reliable than a ring?"
Charlotte couldn't help but punch him lightly.
At that moment, they both couldn't help but think of the wedding rings from their first marriage, which Frederick had buried at the Hawkins family estate, as a memorial to their lost love.
Frederick whispered, "Charlotte, when I let you go back then, I really had no clue if you'd ever come back."
There were too many unknowns at that time.
Would Lola make it?
Would she forget him?
Frederick couldn't help but hold her tighter. He was never the sentimental type, but right now, he was super grateful to everyone who brought Charlotte back to him.
An hour later, he brought Charlotte back to the Hawkins family estate.
The whole Hawkins clan knew the good news, and the house was buzzing with joy.
Patrick, who had been leisurely smoking, immediately put out his cigarette when he saw Charlotte and got up to greet her, "Laura is praying."
He rubbed his hands and looked at Charlotte's belly.
Frederick helped Charlotte sit down. "It's only five weeks. It's still early."
Patrick personally poured a glass of water and placed it in front of Charlotte, showing great concern.
Frederick smiled at Charlotte and said, "This kid sure has a lot of pull. I've never gotten this kind of treatment in my life."
Patrick laughed and scolded, "I'm doting on Charlotte. Not the kid."
He smiled but then got serious. "Having another child should help with Lola's condition."
The topic got a bit heavy.
Frederick took a sip of water and said lightly, "Lola's been much better lately, probably because she has Charlotte with her every day and doesn't have time to think about other stuff."
Patrick nodded, feeling relieved.
As they were talking, Laura came out, naturally very happy as well.
Patrick said to Laura, "I think we should hurry up and arrange the wedding. It was a regret that they didn't have a proper ceremony because of a falling out. With Charlotte pregnant, you should put more effort into it and let Chloe learn from it."
Laura naturally agreed.
She had always doted on Charlotte and wanted to see her in a beautiful wedding dress, marrying Frederick.
Patrick, feeling half of his worries lifted, started joking, "By the way, the astrologer you invited before was really spot-on, saying Frederick's wife would be an Aries, and it turned out to be true. Why don't you have him do a reading for Chloe too?"
Laura had the same idea.
Recently, the weather had been clear and crisp. It would be a perfect time for a wedding.
Laura picked a good day and took the younger members of the family to see the astrologer. The astrologer was not easy to meet, but Laura's status was different.
Laura sincerely thanked the astrologer.
He invited them to sit and personally brewed tea from the mountain, which had a very clear taste.
Laura smiled and chatted with him.
