Chapter 758 No One Else Can Replace Johnny
Lola didn't dwell on whether he misunderstood something; after all, they were ex-spouses. But Angelina had quietly complained to her that Johnny rarely visited them. Most of the time, it was just video calls. She wanted to see Johnny, but he was always so busy.
Lola thought that even if they couldn't be a couple, they still had to consider the kids' feelings.
She decided not to get in the car right away and walked towards Johnny. Dwight, who was interested in her, handed her an umbrella, despite Johnny being her ex-husband. "It's raining pretty hard. Take this," he said with a gentlemanly demeanor.
Dwight was a long-time friend and had business dealings with her law firm, so Lola didn't want to be rude. She took the umbrella and walked over.
Johnny was still sitting in the car, his face expressionless.
When he saw Lola approaching, holding another man's umbrella, he turned his head and looked at her silently for a moment before speaking. "Found yourself a boyfriend? He seems decent."
He spoke calmly, but only he knew how much self-loathing and regret were hidden behind those seemingly peaceful words. That man might not be the Johnny of the past, but he was certainly better than the Johnny of now. At least he had a career and was physically able. He could drive Lola around, hold an umbrella for her, and even walk ahead to press the elevator button for her.
These small things were now beyond Johnny's reach.
Johnny's left leg was weak; he might even be powerless in bed. What does he have to compare with?
Lola had no idea about the turmoil inside him.
She said softly, "He's just a business partner."
Johnny couldn't help but respond sarcastically, "What kind of business partner?"
The atmosphere became very awkward. Felicity, sitting in the front, felt extremely uncomfortable. Even if Lola had found a boyfriend, it wasn't Johnny's place to say such things.
It was the height of pettiness.
Lola was also angry.
They hadn't seen each other for over six months. The last time at the airport, he had been quite calm. She hadn't expected their meeting to turn out like this. She suppressed her emotions and said quietly, "Johnny, can you stop being so childish?"
He didn't respond, his blue eyes staring deeply at her.
Lola didn't want to discuss the kids with him right now. She took a step back, holding the umbrella, just as Dwight stepped forward. They stood side by side, creating a harmonious picture.
This scene irritated Johnny even more.
He stared at them but spoke to Saul, his tone cold. "Drive."
Saul quickly drove away.
The black car slowly moved past, splashing water everywhere, even soaking Lola's dress. She didn't mind and just stood there quietly.
After a while, Dwight asked softly, "You still love him, don't you?"
Lola was taken aback.
Did she still love Johnny? She didn't know. But she knew that from beginning to end, Johnny was the only man she had ever loved. Even though they had reached this point, no one else could replace him.
All those sweet and painful memories were brought by Johnny.
Lola didn't want to discuss her private life with others. Besides, Dwight's question clearly indicated his interest in her, and she couldn't pretend to be oblivious. She chose her words carefully and said, "Mr. Gutierrez, maybe you should reconsider our partnership."
With that, she naturally wouldn't ride in his car.
Lola walked to the roadside to hail a cab. Just as she took out her phone, Dwight approached. He seemed to want to grab her hand, but perhaps because Lola had always given him a professional impression, he didn't use his usual tactics. Instead, he said politely, "Let's not talk about this now. Let me give you a ride home."
But Dwight had crossed her boundaries. They were just business partners, not in any kind of romantic relationship. Lola refused, "I'll take a cab. Our partnership ends here."
Her indifferent attitude made Dwight a bit annoyed.
He blurted out, "Lola, how am I not better than him? Maybe in the past, but now he's..."
He stopped abruptly.
Johnny's leg was a taboo topic in Syeattle. No one dared to talk about it openly.
Because Kingsley had said that if he found out who spread the news, he would make sure their company disappeared from Syeattle and he meant what he said.
Lola didn't notice his unfinished words. She hailed a cab and quickly got in.
Dwight stood there, his fingers curling slightly.
He didn't want to give up on Lola, but now he had angered her. There was no hope for the time being. He thought he should focus on their partnership first and then see if he could pursue her later.
But the next day, Lola went on a business trip.
The night before her trip, after taking care of the kids, Lola stood on her bedroom balcony for a long time before finally gathering the courage to send Johnny a message: [Angelina and Austin miss you. I'll be away for three days. If you have time, you can take them to your place.]
She sent it with great courage.
Because she didn't know what Johnny's thoughts were now. Did he still want to co-parent the kids as he had said before?
If he didn't agree, she would have to find a way to comfort the kids.
Meanwhile, after returning home, Felicity called a doctor to give Johnny a hot compress and medication. After a while, he felt a bit better. It was then that he received the message.
Lola said she was going on a business trip and that Angelina missed him.
Johnny stared at the message for a long time. He was still immersed in his despair, but the message pulled him back to reality. He wasn't just Lola's ex-husband; he was also the father of three kids.
Angelina missed him.
Those words broke his heart.
It had been half a year since he last saw Angelina. He didn't want Lola to know about his condition, so the kids had been kept in the dark. But how long could he keep it up?
Johnny thought, maybe it was time to face reality.
Lola wasn't part of his reality anymore.
He picked up his phone and replied, [Okay.] Then he felt a bit dazed.
