Chapter 124: Frederick, My Bad
Frederick was taken aback. "Katherine?"
Charlotte nodded.
Frederick studied Charlotte's face, searching for something.
Charlotte stayed calm.
Finally, Frederick looked down at the document and said, "Send her to the study."
As Charlotte left, he watched her go.
In the living room, Katherine was checking out the fancy apartment.
She eyed the Morning Dew piano with jealousy. Rumor had it a King had played it for his beloved wife. Frederick had given it to Charlotte. Did that mean he liked Charlotte? No way! Katherine couldn't accept it.
She knew Frederick preferred minimalist decor. How could he stand Charlotte decorating the place with so many layers and colors?
Charlotte came out and looked at Katherine. "He's waiting for you in the study."
Katherine smirked and raised the document bag. "I have a financial case to discuss with Frederick. You don't mind, do you?"
Charlotte smiled. She thought, 'Good thing I'm not Frederick's wife, or I'd be mad'.
Charlotte was polite. "I'm making coffee. Want a cup?"
Katherine's eyes sparkled. "Thanks." She walked into the study.
Voices from the study sounded like business talk.
Charlotte wasn't interested and went to make coffee.
Since there was a guest, she made an extra cup.
As she finished pouring, Katherine leaned beside her. "I saw the Morning Dew. It was my 22nd birthday wish."
Charlotte got the hint. Katherine was saying she got something Katherine didn't want anymore.
Charlotte smiled. "The piano's in the living room. Want to play it?"
Katherine's face changed. She didn't expect Charlotte to be so tough.
She chuckled, "Morning Dew and the white dress at Chloe's party. Miss Russell, know what that means?"
Charlotte looked innocent.
Katherine showed an old photo. It was 24-year-old Frederick with 22-year-old Katherine in a white dress, looking like a perfect couple. Behind them was the Morning Dew on display.
Charlotte looked at the younger Frederick, a noble man any girl would admire.
Katherine giggled, "Miss Russell, you're just my stand-in. No matter how well you imitate, you're still a fake. Now that I'm back, you don't need to stay with Frederick."
Charlotte sipped her coffee. It was too hot!
She looked at Katherine calmly. "If you can take the Morning Dew or Frederick, I'd be grateful."
Charlotte didn't want to stay with Frederick anymore. She wanted a new life.
Katherine was stunned. She thought Charlotte was provoking her!
Katherine picked up a cup of coffee, smiling happily."Miss Russell, sometimes you need strategy to win a man. Don't blame me! I really hate you!"
Then she poured the coffee on her arm and screamed, "Miss Russell, why did you throw coffee on me! So hot. Frederick!"
Katherine looked at Charlotte with a malicious grin.
Charlotte glanced at the coffee in her hand. What a waste!
She then smiled at Katherine. "Miss Mitchell, I admire your father, but I never thought Elijah would have such a despicable daughter! Chasing Frederick is your business, but framing me is wrong! Oh, by the way, your coffee had ice in it. It won't burn you or make Frederick pity you."
Charlotte flicked her hair.
"Let me help you!"
She slowly poured her hot coffee, at least 185°F, onto Katherine's arm.
Katherine screamed in pain.
Frederick stood at the door, eyes cold.
Charlotte met his gaze with a faint smile. "Frederick, my bad!"
Frederick brushed past her, whispering, "Ms. Russell, you want to leave me that badly? You think scalding Katherine will piss me off?"
Charlotte didn't answer. She only regretted that he had seen everything.
Katherine, clueless about their exchange, clung to Frederick, whining, "Frederick, Miss Russell hates me! It hurts so much; stay with me. Come to my place, we can drink and chat in bed."
Katherine's blatant seduction made Charlotte feel ridiculous.
Charlotte regretted the coffee wasn't hot enough! She wanted to show Katherine her true malice!
Frederick kept looking at Charlotte. She didn't seem to want to explain, clearly pushing him away.
Frederick looked at Katherine. "I'll take you to the hospital."
Katherine pouted, "Frederick, you don't care about me! I need red wine and your comfort!"
Frederick gently pushed her away. "Why not let Charlotte take care of you? She's good at bandaging."
Katherine was furious. She couldn't understand why Charlotte, just a woman Frederick kept, wouldn't be subservient to her. How dare she throw coffee on her!
Frederick waited outside for a long time. Katherine came out, but Charlotte hadn't.
He went back in. "You're not going?"
Charlotte was cleaning up and making more coffee. She said quietly, "You go ahead, you two can catch up."
Frederick sensed some resentment. They had been getting along well these past few days, and after that night in the hotel, he felt comfortable. Charlotte was feeling unwell and disgusted by Katherine, so it was normal for her to throw a tantrum.
Frederick hugged her from behind. "Are you mad? You threw coffee on her, and I'm not mad at you."
Frederick laughed, "I'll come back and stay with you. Want red wine or coffee? We can chat in bed, okay?"
