Chapter 204 Don't worry, I'm still chasing!
Frederick gripped his phone and nodded. "I'll be right there!"
After hanging up, he looked at Charlotte.
Charlotte had heard and softly said, "You should go quickly, and drive safely!"
Frederick's Adam's apple bobbed.
He wanted her to come along to see Uma, but given their current relationship, it might be awkward.
Frederick pondered for a moment and whispered, "I might be busy for a while."
Charlotte wasn't as cold as before; she nodded.
As she got out of the car, Frederick rolled down the window and said, "Charlotte."
She stood in the night and waved. "Go quickly!"
Frederick watched her and gently pressed the gas pedal.
It took him two hours to get there. Uma, Patrick's mother, had always lived here because the air was good for her health.
Tonight was probably her final night; she had started talking nonsense in the evening.
The nurse called urgently, and when Patrick checked, he knew Uma wasn't doing well, so he quickly called all the family members to come and say their goodbyes.
Patrick was the eldest son, and Frederick was the most outstanding among the younger generation, whom Uma valued the most.
Uma was holding on to her last breath, waiting for him.
Frederick parked and rushed to Uma's bedroom. The Hawkins family made way for him, and Patrick whispered in Uma's ear, "Uma, Frederick is here to see you!"
Uma was on her deathbed.
But upon hearing the footsteps, she slowly opened her eyes, and for a moment, the wrinkles on her face seemed to smooth out.
Her eyes were exceptionally clear.
Patrick knew this was Uma's final burst of energy; she had held on just to say a few words to Frederick.
Sure enough, Uma even sat up.
Frederick quickly went over, knelt in front of her, held her withered hand, and kissed it.
Uma reached out to touch his hair.
She loved Frederick so much; he was good-looking and much smarter than others since childhood. The only thing was that he never got married, and she never got to hold a great-grandchild.
Uma, with a clear mind, slowly spoke, "I heard from your mom during the New Year that you liked an Aries girl and said you would bring her to see me. Frederick, why didn't you bring her for me to see?"
Frederick looked up and gazed at Uma tenderly.
He smiled faintly. "She's working overtime and didn't have time to come."
Uma's expression changed. "You're just trying to fool me! I know your temper; you must have made the girl angry!"
Frederick still had a faint smile and responded, "Yes, I made her angry! I'm still pursuing her. I'll bring her to see you another day, and you can say a few words for me!"
Uma was relieved. "It's good that you're still pursuing her!"
She then asked what kind of girl she was.
Frederick, worried she couldn't hear well, leaned close and gently said, "She's beautiful and usually obedient, but when she's mad, it's serious!"
Uma listened closely.
As her final moment approached, she said, "I wish I could see her with my own eyes!"
Inside the room, the Hawkins family women were crying.
Uma was a good person, and everyone was reluctant to let her go, but they knew this was the last time they'd see her.
Frederick patted Uma's head.
He took out his phone and softly said, "How about I let her talk to you? Once she speaks, you'll know I'm not lying."
Uma's eyes brightened.
Frederick dialed Charlotte's number, and she answered.
Frederick's voice was hoarse. "Uma, my grandmother, wants to say a few words to you."
Charlotte guessed his intention—to let Uma leave peacefully. She was silent for a few seconds and then responded.
Frederick placed the phone next to Uma's ear.
On the other end, Charlotte held the phone, listening to a woman she had never met, asking her to be more understanding. It reminded her of the regret of not seeing her father one last time.
When her father passed away, what regrets did he have?
Her heart ached; she didn't want Uma to leave with regrets, even if it meant lying to comfort her in her final moments.
Charlotte softly said, "Don't worry, Uma. I will."
Uma smiled, her pupils began to dilate, but she never let go of the phone.
Charlotte held the phone, sensing the passing of a life.
She could feel Frederick's sorrow.
When she saw him again, it had already been half a month.
Charlotte knew he had finished Uma's funeral and had flown to Novaria for the first court hearing of Katherine's divorce from her producer husband.
Charlotte didn't follow the details.
She had distanced herself emotionally and didn't care about Katherine's situation. When Frederick returned, he called her, "Let's meet."
Charlotte was in her apartment. He wanted to come over, but Charlotte softly said, "Let's go to your place."
Frederick drove over, and it was already evening.
The cicadas in the trees were chirping, adding some liveliness to the evening.
Charlotte came downstairs and saw Frederick leaning against the car. When he saw her, he opened the car door for her and gently asked, "Where's the little white dog?"
Charlotte got into the car and naturally said, "I sent it to my mom's place."
Frederick looked at her.
He hadn't seen her for half a month, and his gaze carried some meaning. Charlotte lowered her eyes to avoid his gaze.
He smiled, closed the car door.
When he sat next to her, he absentmindedly fastened his seatbelt. After a long while, he couldn't help but ask, "Why don't you ask?"
