Chapter 246 Who Do You Feel Sorry For
He used to be head over heels for that sweet, innocent Chloe.
But he figured it wasn't gonna work out, so they split.
Now, thinking back, he couldn't lie—he wanted to see her. But what was the point? They called it quits over two years ago.
Andrew mumbled, "It's on me! Tell her she can have whatever she wants."
Frederick's eyes were deep. He gave a slight smile. "We don't need any payback. All I want is a word from you! Now that you say you two aren't a match, I can chill! I'll go back and tell Chloe to move on and start dating for real. She might not find another guy like you, but finding someone who truly cares for her isn't that hard!"
With that, Frederick turned and walked away.
Andrew just stood there, looking kinda lost.
Nathan thought for a sec and said softly, "Mr. Devereux, get it together! We got a meeting soon!"
Andrew stayed in his daze. After a bit, he suddenly blurted out, "I can't even be with the woman I love, so what's the point of a meeting?"
Frederick got back to Syeattel, and it was already ten in the morning.
The villa was super quiet.
Lola was at school, and Charlotte was holding Gavin, chatting with Chloe.
At that moment, Frederick's restlessness eased up a bit. He stared at Charlotte for a while before walking over to take Gavin from her arms. He calmly said to Chloe, "Now Charlotte and I will take you home!"
Chloe looked a bit freaked out. She glanced at Charlotte.
Frederick snorted. "Scared now? You had a kid on your own out there. Weren't you scared then?"
Chloe didn't dare to speak.
Charlotte held Frederick's arm, gently dabbing a tissue on his handsome face, and asked softly, "Did you have a fight in Copenhagen? What did you say?"
She was super gentle and caring. How could Frederick not know what she was thinking?
He said lightly, "Yeah, we had a fight! But I didn't mention Gavin! If he cares, he'll find out eventually."
He couldn't help but add sarcastically, "Isn't he always so resourceful?"
Charlotte glanced at Chloe, who didn't dare to say a word.
It was pretty heartbreaking!
When Frederick went upstairs to shower and change, Charlotte followed him. In the bedroom, she said, "You did the right thing. If Andrew cares about Chloe, he'll find out sooner or later."
Frederick had half his clothes off. He turned and smiled. "You're playing both sides, Charlotte. How did I not see this before?"
Charlotte picked out an outfit for him, her fingers pausing. "Don't give me that! I can step in or not."
Before she could finish, he pulled her into a hug.
Then he pressed her against the wardrobe.
Frederick held her slim waist, one hand gently touching her face. "Of course you need to step in! You're Chloe's sister-in-law, and you're usually the toughest. Help me keep an eye on her, okay?"
Charlotte rested her hands on his shoulders, smiling faintly. "Aren't you worried I'll side with Andrew?"
Frederick leaned in close, whispering in her ear, "I went head-to-head with him; who do you feel sorry for?"
He was totally teasing.
Charlotte wasn't immune. She pressed her lips to his, whispering, "I don't feel sorry for either of you."
Frederick chuckled softly. He felt way better and was in the mood to flirt. Maybe the past few days had been too heavy, and he just wanted to be close to her. Even though time was tight and it wasn't the best moment, he gently slipped his hand under her clothes, giving her a moment of comfort.
Afterward, she leaned against his shoulder, panting.
Frederick held her tenderly, and after a long while, he said, "You shouldn't go later! My dad's got a bad temper and might say some harsh stuff!"
Charlotte shook her head. Her eyes were slightly moist, and she whispered, "If I go, Dad's anger will cool down a bit!"
After she finished speaking, Frederick stayed silent and still for a long time.
Charlotte looked up. "What's wrong?"
He touched her delicate earlobe, his voice hoarse. "You called him Dad, Charlotte. In your heart, I'm still your husband, right? We still have a chance to go back to how things were, don't we?"
Charlotte's ears turned slightly red. She pushed his hand away. "We're talking about serious stuff here."
Frederick knew when to stop. He gently pinched her earlobe and took his clothes into the bathroom.
By late morning, Frederick and his crew rolled up to the Hawkins family.
The butler ran inside, all excited, "Chloe is back!"
"What?" Patrick stood up, grinning, waving his hand at Laura. "Chloe has been gone for years and finally willing to come back."
Laura was just as excited.
They immediately walked out and saw a black Maybach parked in the driveway.
Frederick opened the back door.
Chloe got out of the car, holding the hand of a two or three-year-old boy.
Patrick and Laura were stunned.
The butler and maids in the house didn't dare to move.
After what felt like forever, Patrick finally spoke up, "Chloe, is this kid yours?"
Chloe couldn't even lift her head and softly murmured, "Yes."
Patrick was fuming, ready to lay into her, but Laura, with tears in her eyes, held him back. "It's hard enough for her to come back. Keep your cool! Besides, there are so many people here. Give Chloe and the kid some dignity!"
Patrick shot a fierce glare at Laura.
Once inside the hall, the family sat down, and Frederick handed Gavin to Patrick.
Patrick was still seething, glaring at his son. "You think I'll just let this slide because of the kid? This isn't over. She dared to secretly have a child on her own out there."
Patrick suddenly stared at Gavin.
Then, he looked at Charlotte. The similar eyebrows, fair skin, and short golden hair—he's the spitting image of Charlotte.
Patrick's anger started to fade, and he seemed less sure of himself.
He sighed lightly.
Laura also noticed, her beautiful face filled with worry.
What were they gonna do?
Patrick reached out to touch Gavin's cheek. The kid was truly adorable, and he really liked him. He said, "Frederick, you handle this!"
He felt a deep sadness.
Looking at Chloe, seeing her in simple clothes, his heart ached.
After a long while, he said softly, "Now that you're back, stay here! You can't keep living with them; they have their own lives. Your mother and I will take care of the child."
He didn't blame her, but he was still heartbroken.
After speaking, he went upstairs to his study alone.
Laura wept. "Neither of you siblings ever let me have peace of mind!"
Chloe bit her lip and whispered, "Mom, I'm sorry!"
Charlotte signaled to Frederick.
Frederick went upstairs. He opened the study door, and the room was filled with smoke, the air thick with the smell of cigarettes.
Frederick opened the window and put out Patrick's cigarette, saying, "You rarely smoke these days, saying it's for Lola's health. Are you so happy that Chloe is back today that you've forgotten about this matter?"
Patrick looked up at Frederick and sneered, "Happy? Do I look like I'm in a good mood to you? Look at her, always causing a scene! And now there's a kid involved!"
Frederick made him some coffee and said softly, "I went to Copenhagen last night and had a fight with Andrew! He doesn't know about Chloe having a kid!"
Patrick put his hand over his eyes and sighed. "He has no feelings for Chloe, does he?"
Frederick took a sip of coffee before speaking, "Not exactly. If he had no feelings at all, someone as cautious as him wouldn't have kept things going with Chloe for over half a year. I think Andrew just feels it's not a good fit! You know how Chloe is, Dad."
That's why he didn't mention Gavin's existence.
The Hawkins family could afford to raise a child.
Patrick stayed quiet.
He was still shocked and couldn't wrap his head around how Chloe got mixed up with someone as intense as Andrew, especially since their families were related by marriage!
After a long while, Patrick spoke, "Now that things are like this, don't make it hard for Charlotte. She's in a tough spot! Don't let this mess up your relationship with her."
Frederick nodded. "I won't!"
He suddenly smiled. "Even though Charlotte doesn't say it, I can tell she wants Chloe and Andrew to be together."
Patrick wiped his face. "That's because she's kind-hearted! Women always hope for a happy ending!"
After finishing their chat, they went downstairs together.
Patrick had a different expression, holding Gavin lovingly. The little face looked a lot like Lola and also like Charlotte.
Patrick, holding the child, said to Charlotte, "Frederick has to go to the office, so leave the child here. You take Chloe to the department store and buy some things for her and Gavin. The way they are now is unacceptable."
As he spoke, he kissed Gavin affectionately.
Charlotte nodded. "Don't worry, Dad. I will!"
Frederick smiled and pinched her cheek. "You're really fitting the role of a Hawkins family daughter-in-law!"
Charlotte slapped his hand away.
Frederick wasn't annoyed. He turned to Chloe and said, "If you dare run away again, I'll break your legs!"
Chloe's eyes filled with tears.
Gavin was a bit scared, clinging to Patrick.
Patrick, feeling sorry for his grandson, immediately scolded Frederick, "Why are you scaring her? Look, you've frightened Gavin!"
Frederick smiled, glanced at Charlotte, and then drove away.
Charlotte had lunch at the Hawkins villa and then took Chloe out.
After two years, Chloe was somewhat reserved.
Charlotte was very considerate, taking her to some niche brand stores. The clothes weren't expensive, not comparable to what Chloe used to wear..
In half a day, they bought a lot of clothes and necessaries for Chloe and Gavin.
While having coffee, Charlotte took a card from her bag and placed it in Chloe's hand. "Frederick asked me to give this to you. It's his secondary card."
Chloe was hesitant to accept it.
